Autocross is a great way to get into HPDE (done it once now-can be scary, where autocross is sooooo safe and relatively slow-still fun tho) and feel how your car works in braking, cornering, accelerating, etc.

Tracking can be scary at first because of the speeds but it's very rewarding to find the full capabilities of your car. These are hard to find through AutoX, but like you said it does open your eyes to how your car works with 0 to no risk involved.

Learning how to read the course is a skill that comes with experience. Autocross is difficult because of the variety of speeds and types of turns, but it is a very safe way to really wring out the dynamics of a car. It can be very competitive but the really fast people have a lot of experience.

If you are fast at the road course you will very likely be quick at Autocross, although I have seen the inverse not be the case. Experience with AutoX and becoming 1 with your car plays a big role in doing well.

Walking the course really helps you learn it, you usually get enough time to walk it at least 3 times. You learn quick those cones come at you fast compared to when your walking. Once you get a few runs in you can start pushing harder to work on getting your times lower.

I like that approach, although it's hard to stay conservative at the start!

It is weird at first because on a track you can see clearly the next turns coming up. In autocross you see the whole course of cones and it gets very distracting and confusing but its been getting funner with time for me.

I don't get why autocross doesn't have flags be placed on top of cones as well to create more of a wall. The purpose is to minimize background noise/distraction for the driver so the course is more clear. I track my car but would try autocross if it weren't for these cones.

Our team member Alvin struggled with this but does amazing at the track, so we are right there with you. He has also done great at AutoX events that have a fully conned path unlike this event that had cones that pointed and guided you that way. We realize this concept allows you to better use a piece of tarmac as there can be overlay, but it is something we aren't used to.

Everyone knows driver mod is the best mod for lap time. Only way to get driver mod is seat time. Autocross=cheap seat time

Nothing can replace actual seat time in a car, that is a fact!

What about going from hpde to autocross

The Guys didn't make it too clear but that is exactly what we did. You are bringing that CS next time!

It comes down to space available, PCA mandates 0.5 mile courses, so you gotta make it work with the space you can rent out. I was at this event, the track took a lot of getting used to, but was very fun after learning it.
