It's a testament to Internet Historian's growing range as a filmmaker that he's known primarily for his comedic videos, and then he can deliver an emotional gut-punch like this while still remaining consistent with his usual content. I respected him a lot before, but over the last year or two he has just been on fire.

The original plan of just digging up the gravel around Floyd was the best course of action. But instead of sticking to that, they wasted all this time trying various methods that didn't work, and then the entrance caved in and locked them out.
Should have just taken turns at moving gravel, and they would have freed him eventually before the cave in.

To answer your questions about the coffee instead of water.
Dude's dying of exposure, he NEEDS heat, and if you're going to heat up water to give to him, you may as well make coffee. It's probably healthier than just giving him water actually. Water wasn't exactly generally safe to drink at this time, which is why most people actually drank booze.

  • @edim108
    @edim108 Год назад +13

About the only good thing out of that whole story is seeing how some of these people were giving their absolute all to get Floyd out of that cave.
Especially Homer, Gerald, Miller and Burdon were the MVPs. They were willing to go through that entire cave and work for hours on end until their fingers couldn't grip the rocks and their lungs burnt, all to save Floyd- a complete stranger for Miller and Burdon.
It's stories like this that are the reason why governments have procedures for getting these rescue missions set up and going ASAP.
If the gov't got involved earlier, Floyd might have been pulled out alive- they missed him by 3 days, so imagine if the official rescue attempt started a week earlier...

Coffee, milk, alcohol, tea, and soda was preferred. Also, orange juice wasn't around until the end of WW2.

@Zeallust It was 1925 and the middle of Kentucky (I live in KY so I get to make fun of it).
I'm sure that the locals did not know or care about the effects other than the immediate warmth. Coffee is not dehydrating in and of itself, but the caffeine is a diuretic meaning it can cause more frequent urination which could lead to dehydration if more liquids aren't consumed.
The caffeine can also increase blood pressure, body temperature, and blood flow to the extremities. It raises the core temperature, but that does also trigger the body's response to perspire which in turn does cool down overall. I mean they had him take the sedative with whiskey so I doubt they were thinking much past getting hot liquid into him.

@@zeallust8542 Coffee isn't dehydrating. The caffeine is. It could have easily been decaffeinated coffee since it had been around for 20 or so years by then. We don't know the particulars. The simple fact is they wanted to warm him up and that was their plan. It even says in the video a couple of times that it snapped him back to lucidity after consuming it. It was a temporary fix, yet better than nothing.

I actually did a tour of one of the Mammoth caves passages. It was one of the tamest ones. Only one point that I had to go sideways throughn and another spot where I had to duck. But it was beautiful. I get why people love spelunking. Especially back there.

People who don't do it often say they are just idiots. I used to go with just a couple of friends. A few times we explored for so long that we were gone most of the day. There are some pretty large cave systems where I live in Tennessee. I've crawled through some passages on my belly like Floyd did. I think the one thing I learned quickly was how much energy you spend doing it and how you really need to save enough to get out. I almost didn't make it out of one because I was nearly exhausted, I just couldn't climb back up a rope we secured. My friends ended up having to help me. I get why people do it and I also understand why people think we are stupid for it. There is no doubt danger. I remember one place that was pretty much just a sinkhole, I never went into it because of that reason. One week it was a large hole you could climb down, the next week we came back and it was practically sealed up again by earth.

The reason why this video is so concerning is because the only reason he received so much monetary support is because it was lucrative to market.
And marketing itself caused people to halt the progress out of panic which wasted time that could have saved his life… but it was easier to market and more lucrative to bring people to look at the shitshow! :D :D :D
It would have been more respectful to let him die alone with the support of his friend and relative to bring him peace.
And at this extreme level of support he most likely would have lived but people just fucked that up too because nobody regulated trespassing with the understanting that it was lucrative to make people get excited. He ended up dying without any company too, AND they defaced his memory for even more money.
You can save people with support from the news but the ones in power have no intentions to do it whatsoever, they want money.

I know for a fact this is mostly a western culture thing too. People here (I'm in latam but this exact thing happened last decade here with a happy ending, and less drama) don't really have a right to be educated, not even about respect. This is not that common elsewhere.

This must be why I'm terrified of spaces that are too small for me to be safe a cave must be at least as high as the ceiling of my house ... and as wide as wide ... Even in video games such as minecraft when I have to dig a mine I make it wide at least 3 blocks wide and 3/4 blocks high... (depends if I want to use the ladders or not). The only thing that doesn't give me problems on video games (but in life it's not even dead) is the height.

I look at it the same way I look at his my immortal videos. He was just reenacting the fan fiction someone else wrote in those videos. If he would have made it known he was reading a story written by someone else, I don't think anyone would have cared at all. He has since settled the situation with the author he plagiarized. Hopefully he learned from his mistake. We all make them.

    • @TheShadowCookie

I certainly feel the same way about it. His videos are well-edited and entertaining, so hopefully he learned a lesson from it and will not tap into that well again anytime soon. I only recently learned about it through the "documentary" of hbomberguy; thus, the disappointment felt by the plagiarism still lingers something fierce. @@TheycallmeHatGuy
