In my opinion the original design is extremely lazy and both isnt scary or a good kid's toy design, like... what kind of kid wants a jack in the box that has a red, smaller box pop out with eyes?? Sorry I rambeled, This designs a lot more pleasing for a horror design and I love it!!

I think it's translucent clay. I've seen people like North Of The Border do that, and it works really well.
