    I don't know why it never occurred to me to do small batch canning, but tackling something like that on the daily, every other day, or even once a week would mean less overwhelm and more preserved foods when the garden harvest is beginning to "roll in". I know you've done small batches of other things in the past, but for some reason, today just "clicked". LOL Also the kittens seem very happy and healthy and I think they may choose the Catio as "home base" much longer than you think they might. Though cats are peculiar and might choose another area entirely once released from the Catio - like laying on top of the kidding stall rails or something. 🤣

    I read the comments to see how many other people automatically thought the other kitten should be called Jack if you called the grey one Colby. I was not disappointed lol I absolutely love my instant pot pro plus with the canning feature so I can do small batch canning. Mostly though because once I've set it going I can just walk away whilst it just does all the hard work for me. So glad you gave the tip about the tomato sauce though, because things like that are always great for a novice canner to know!

    Thank you for being real. I think that many Americans (like me) are removed from the Military life. I think it’s very good to remind people it’s a rea thing. Not just in movies, not just a side note on a report on the evening news. Real people real lives doing real things daily-while we go about our lives doing our things. On Saturdays in the summer growing up in East Tn you could see fighter jets fly low, enough to make out the helmets but not faces- the sonic sound would follow. It was always exciting- still is tho not as often- but always a good reminder of those unseen people doing their jobs❤

    The kittens are adorable!! I don't expect you to have too much trouble with the cats and your garden. I would suggest only ever feeding them in the barn. Also some people think that for barn cats to do their job they should not be fed but encourage to hunt the mice for food. A hungry cat will catch a mouse to curb it's hunger but not be concerned with hunting once full. A well fed cat will hunt and play with their catch and continue to catch mice. As always your garden looks great! The military ops in the background don't bother me. They actually make me proud that we have dedicated individuals out there training to keep us safe!!🇺🇸 Thanks for sharing and stay safe!🙏❤

    Apologies if you're having to repeat yourself here (maybe I missed it in the video), but what was the liquid you were wiping around the edges of the jars of green beans?
    Also, I would love it if you did a video, or just an expanded chat, about your approaches to pest control! You said that the birds were great for helping around the garden, but never said what sort of tasks they do. I have a similarly wet climate, which has a different range of pests and other irritants company to many other climates, so it would be great to know how you manage that from a homesteading perspective.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  15 дней назад +3

      That's vinegar going around the rims of the jars! Also the birds love to pick bugs off of plants. I don't love that they sometimes pick at the seedlings and fruit but I'm guessing the bugs would do that for them if the birds were not there! :)

      @JamCamel 15 дней назад +2

      @@SageandStoneHomestead I had no problems with aphids in my veggie garden this year, but heaps of problems with them at the far end of my property, and all I can guess is it's because I set up a bird feeder at the end of winter in my veggie patch. Bird feed is a lot easier to refill, compared to trying to remove aphids. I'll definitely keep the bird feeder around for the winter and early spring.
      I suspect the birds also do some assistance in eating bugs in the soil too. I've heard chickens are great in March to let them run through the garden (before your veggies have sprouted) and eat slugs and slug eggs. I don't have chickens yet, and the birds won't eat slugs (can't say I blame them), but I'm hoping that tactic works.

    Completely off topic 😂 but what age do you process your meat goats? I have 3 boys that didn’t sell and one is huge, the other two are still tiny. All ND. They are 6 months old. Do you part them out or leave in big roasting pieces? I would LOVE more videos on this because I have no idea what I’m doing 😂

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  15 дней назад +2

      What we do is part them out like we would a rabbit except with a neck roast (we don't get that on a rabbit). So there's two shoulder roasts, two leg roasts, and the back piece with the spine still inside, we call it a saddle roast. Trimmings from ribs and belly are ground. RUclips hates those videos as far as promotion goes so we plan to do a workshop of sorts this fall and film that for posting elsewhere. I'll update here when the time comes for that! You can butcher at any age but the bigger they are the more meat they have. Between 10 and 18 months is good though! They don't tend to get tough with age.
