  • Hey guys, had a request to compare the Dual Recto Multi-Watt to the Mark V in extreme mode, so I went ahead & compared all three channels. Just a couple simple riffs, each dialed in to sound good in the room. Check it out! Each definitely has their own character. Note the Mark V has EL34 in it.
    Mark V fat 1:56
    Recto clean 2:30
    Mark V crunch 3:04
    Recto orange vintage 4:22
    Mark V extreme 5:44

    Couple of cheeky cosmetic mods on the Dual Rec👌 Have dome the same with mine- purple jewel light, but the Lone Star knobs instead (black for channels 2 & 3, and cream for channel 1). Cheers for the video & stay safe in these strange times!

    I own a mk v. Would like to have a recto someday. Good comparison. I thought clean channel went to the mk v. Middle channel went to the recto, and I’m not sure about channel 3. I would have to get a recto next to a mk v and tweak the heck out of both amps.

    I always loved the Mark series tone. I grew up on James Hetfield's tone. So I always preferred that tone for my own playing. The Recto's not my thing, but Cannibal Corpse sound amazing using them. Each to their own. Great video.

    Any chance you can blend these two together? In the market for both. Planning on running EL34s in the Recto and letting the MKV do the 6L6 thing with tighter low end. Use the EL34s to fill in the mid range of the 6L6s.

    The Mark V is more upper mid focused, so it sounds more defined. The Mark V would be a more suitable for classic rock as well as metal. The Rectifier seems more bottom focused but slightly less versatile in this test, but sounds great though. I've seen other comparisons between the two amps in the past and the answers are still the same. Great video; thanks.

    Definitely like the sound of the Mark V in most cases (might have liked Mouth of War on the Dual a little bit more). IMO, using an overdrive petal with a (dual/triple) rectifier is must, especially if you want modern tight metal sound. A simple pedal makes the rectifiers go from muddy to magical.

    • @TIGHTENmetal
      @TIGHTENmetal  4 года назад +1

      You are correct. I actually also like a boost on the V, where I don't on most Marks. The V is the least gainy Mark since the IIC+.
      At any rate, it's also important to know what the amp sounds like on its own. I think a lot of guys buy an amp and expect to just plug in & get XYZ sound they're heard, and that's usually not the case.

  • @michaellrakes5521
    @michaellrakes5521 4 года назад +6

    The Mark V and really all the Mark series from IIC+ onward are the crowning achievement Mesa Amps. The Dual Rectifier? I know people love it and it defined the later 90s sound but it was never a favorite of mine, too muddy and limited in it's range. It can get a nice sound and you got a nice tone here with it, but by and large, it's just not a versatile amp.
    The Mark V Is the clear winner in my opinion

    • @TIGHTENmetal
      @TIGHTENmetal  4 года назад +3

      The 2 channel Rectos are not very versatile, but the Multi-Watt (with a boost on tap) is extremely versatile & perhaps my favorite "everything" amp. The V is slightly more versatile but a lot harder to dial in.

    I had a multi watt dual rec for years. It’s a great amp but I always felt it was too flubby on modern mode. Even with a Maxon OD 808 in front it was still not tight enough. The mark V blows it out of the water. Way more versatile in every way and tighter while still maintaining the aggressive tone. The multi watt vintage mode was amazing though. But the Mark V is the best amp I’ve ever played.

    • @TIGHTENmetal
      @TIGHTENmetal  2 года назад

      What cab? Obviously Rectos are looser than Marks, but on bold / diode / modern with a boost & a traditional (not OS) cab you can get them pretty darn tight- in their own way- which is to say its still not the same as a Mark.
