This is an outstanding series of lectures that takes me back to my first shop classes in the 60s! My Dad graduated from a trade high school in Brooklyn as a machinist, went to work for Grumman and was transferred to Houston during Apollo. I am going through gunsmith school now and it's expensive. Why did we 'dumb down' high schools and eliminate shop classes?
Keep up the good videos, I learned alot from you this last year, thank you, when I go to auto stores now like princess auto and buy tools I know how to use them correctly and so that thank you, 13 year old Matt
just when you think you know everything something new comes up ...lol...i just learned what that little wrench is for !!!!!! another great video mate,, im a regular viewer of your vids ,, i love these vids , very detailed , informative and just superb ,,keep them coming......
Hello Tubalcain Thank You for all Your lovely Videos! I must say, it's hard to read a micrometer in imperial style! And Your question about the thread in continetal micrometers: It has a pitch of 0.5mm.
I don't think anyone commented this, so i checked my metric micrometer. It moves 0.5 mm each turn, so I guess that's the thread pitch. Not sure if that's standard, but it's likely. It's also just around 13% smaller than 40/inch.
Micrometer part 1 of 2 Per the tubing ball adaptor that was .200 inch...you said ADD it to the reading....didn't you mean subtract it from the reading ? burke
Wow, I'm such an asshole. I bought a 1-2 inch micrometer and I thought the thing would measure from 0 - 2 inches.... *facepalm* Hopefully they will take it back. I was looking all over to see what this "standard" was, know I know.... Thanks Cain. Just got my machining certificate... yah I have no clue.
I ALWAYS clean the Anvils on a 0-1" or 0-25 mm by closing them on a piece of clean paper & dragging the Mic' through it. Then check the "ZERO" on a day to day basis. It's surprising how one can be half a thou' out otherwise!!
Please don’t take these away. PLEASE PLEASE , i pled with you teacher for people who have learning disabilities That want too learn I find there is people out here who it takes awhile to seat the information you greatly offered Here , I know a good educator when I see one who loves helping and instructing minds young and old so here I am , it’s not being lazy I’ve seen the inside of special ed ...and it Hurt more and it did good back in the day . They Made TV SHOWS and made fun of the idea of being slow or done I can’t remember this I don’t want to be made fun of like a sweat Hog on KKOTER OR LOST IN A HAZE. Of ROOM 222. ..so about being so have pity on us ....out look and kids give up and walk away from school ...sorry about how long this is ....Pete ..Thank you and Blessings.
When you get a micrometer where that the spindle is frozen how to you break it loose? I got one on EBay that looks nice but the spindle is frozen. I have used penetrating oil and disassembled as much as possible but haven't been able to free the spindle yet.
If the micrometer is calibrated and known to be well more accurate than the resolution, of course it's doable. And of course the salesman is going to disagree. But if your tolerances are tighter than the resolution it's a bit shady already
As an Inspector of some 35 yr's + experience I shouldn't be saying this (I'm also a time served turner) The Ratchet (allegedly) gives everyone the same "Feel" But I still believe the old adage that "When It Squeaks - It's Size" (don't tell anybody else I said that!!!!!)
is it just me or is you tube totaly going crazy with all these ads,,,, i think all the engineering and physics people need to leave u tube , we need to start are own half way decent sex add free zone without pop up audio , who do these people think we are

Thanks for watching. They think they are stepping up a notch without shop classes.
Lyle:
One of your best videos, keep them coming.
Thanks, another old timer, J.R. Downs
your gonna make me a millwright my friend, i owe you big for taking the time to post these videos
your are providing an amazing resource my friend,

great stuff, i have become increasingly addicted to your shop videos. thank you!
You are the best
I have learned so much from these videos, and i,m just a backyard builder
I'm going to say this once and I'll probably say it many times in my comments to your videos - thanks mr. john, it's been soooo helpful ;)
Thx Mr Pete, you are a better teacher than grandpa, so having our grandson watch so he will under stand my mic's are not "C" clamps,,,hehe!
lol
Your videos are so enjoyable, thank you for doing them.
Thank you very much. I enjoy all of your videos. I have recently purchased some old metric micrometers.
i'm in machinist school right now and most of my classmates need to watch this video.
@colleenliberty Thanks for the little history lesson. I knew it was an old one--there are no markings on it.
Thanks Burke. You are the first one in 23,000 to notice this. I just made a correction.
pete
I never used one before watched your video took test ,I understand how to use and read them Ty for the help
very good point, wouldnt flat ends give a smaller reading on tubes and pipes
I use a piece of paper to clean the mic by clamping it between the anvils and pulling it
threw. Use very light pressure .

There are some micrometers with 1mm pitch (older ones)
That old micrometer is so old it looks like the first brown and sharp micrometer
wow i have the same micrometer as your old one.
Hi ,i have the same depth micrometer i got it disassembled and i cant put it back together can you do a video about that

Yes
Some micrometers have a threaded anvil, that can be screwed in and out, to zero the micrometer.
Thanks
I am looking at buying a Starrett micrometer. Should I get a steel one or stainless steel?
Steel
Can you elaborate?
Please don’t take these away. PLEASE PLEASE , i pled with you teacher for people who have learning disabilities

Let it soak for three months,
Reckon I can split the Thou' marks into tenths without the vernier bit - It's what I do!!
If the micrometer is calibrated and known to be well more accurate than the resolution, of course it's doable. And of course the salesman is going to disagree. But if your tolerances are tighter than the resolution it's a bit shady already

This is my Territory - I'm an Inspector (don't get me started re cosine error!!)
Don't use the Mic' spanner till you've cleaned the Anvils.
T=up
