    A lot of good advice. Carrying a second "sacrificial" wallet is worthwhile too. A bit of cash, some old store cards, and your pickpocket will miss the main wallet.
    As for hotel safes, one thing to consider is that every safe has a factory-set number to unlock it, in case a guest forgets their number. Some staff are familiar with that number, so you need to be sure you're in an environment where a staff member isn't going to rob your safe. Your own portable travel safe looks like a great alternative!

    I use a rain cover for my backpack when I take it outside. Obviously, it's good if it rains but it also makes it more difficult for pickpockets to get anything out of the backpack. I also tend to mear pants with zippers. I was on a packed train in Paris when a guy next to me tried to pick my pocket but was confused by the zippers. His messing with them alerted me. I gave him THAT look, and he left the next exit empty handed.
