l have passed Rusty Rita and viewed the statue from queuing traffic on the A1 many a time on the journey from Mid Wales to my parents house in the Scottish borders near Berwick. the funniest thing about the Angel of the north is that 25 years ago the city awoke to the statue wearing a replica Newcastle shirt with number 9 Shearer on the back of it
I hope Steve won't mind me mentioning a rival but there is a RUclips channel with wonderful short drone videos of the North East including Newcastle and the sections of the coast from Scarborough all the way up to Berwick. Look for "Peace Drone".
I'm an exiled Geordie in the Midlands but travel up for Newcastle United games by road. The first sight of the Angel on the A1 then of SJP on Redheugh Bridge still gives me goosebumps
Two films in a row...yippy! This was a stunning trip. I've been to ''the Angel" twice now." Thanks for the memories, Steve. Homemade Vegetable Beef soup tonight. Thanks for taking me along.
Yeah suprise extra video on a Tuesday Steve 👍 Would be great if you & Alicia went round the pubs in Newcastle enjoyed your other videos in Edinburgh & Glasgow 👌❤️
I lived in Wylam just to the west of Newcastle until I was six years old this bought back some very distant memories, thanks for that and stay safe, cheers.
Thanks for visiting the city of my birth, Steve! What a brilliant video. It's so easy to take this great city for granted, but you showed that it really does have a lot to offer, and a nice invitation for your followers to spend a little time in it on the way back from the Amsterdam ferry. You spent your time well, you really did!
Put a nice modern gas connection into the Castle Keep a few years ago and saw Ed Sheeran at St James’ (didn’t think much of that). Thanks for the weekday wandering.
What a fantastic surprise video Steve love it yea what size football stadium yeah sounds good idea pub crawl Newcastle think it be interesting angel lovely big statue again fantastic video thank you
Some nice wee bonus footage, didn't expect a video this day of the week. 🙂 Thanks for sharing Steve. Been only in Newcastle for same reasons as you, usage of the Ferry back and from The Netherlands. Nice to see a bit more of that city.
Splendid video as usual! Very entertaining. Although I have driven past Newcastle, I have never 'been' there. You have inspired me to go there for a day, probably after Easter. Thanks.
Spent a semester during my exchange studies in Newcastle back in 2019, and did pretty much the exact same walk from city centre to the Angel of the North. Also took a bunch of trips down to Durham on the 21 bus, really lovely place. Brings back memories, definitely want to visit North East England again :)
The Central serves some decent ale, but if I'm in Gateshead I prefer the Station East (directly across the road beneath the railway arch, you can just see it at 6:45). Another pub well worth a visit is the Schooner near the International Stadium at the top of a narrow lane leading to the river.
Excellent video Steve. I’ve travelled all around the world vicariously through your videos but didn’t expect you’d ever walk past the top of my street. Also pleased to see that I’m the second Low Fell resident to comment on this. Clearly a big following here. 😂
Thanks for exploring this part of the world. Any time I’m in Newcastle I’m just passing through on the train. I look forward to seeing the pub tour video sometime.
The Building behind you as you turn the first corner is Leazes Terrace. I lived in two different parts of it when I was at Newcastle University between 1971 and 1974. The East Stand was built in 1972 and before it went up we could stand on a balcony and watch the game for free. It’s coming up fifty years old now. Great video, as usual.
There are really interesting places in Newcastle. The the Millennium bridge the Discovery Museum The Tyne bridge and the Sydney harbour bridge were built by the same company Dorman Long & co. Middlesbrough
Really enjoying this video Steve, yes I have been to Newcastle a couple of times, a nice city,. I enjoyed the walk over the Tyne Bridge, it reminds me of the Sydney Harbour Bridge which I have been to top but that was back in 1998. I think it was designed by the same architect. I agree there is nice buildings and also the railway station. I have only seen Angel of the North when going on the train to York.
I'm delighted to see this (mid-week bonus!). I'm from Whitley Bay on the coast from Newcastle and I now live a few miles south near Durham City. Newcastle is part of my stomping ground and a fabulous place. Not everyone welcomed the Angel of the North when it was built but I am among those who think it is a wonderful thing. When i first returned to the North East over 20 years ago, I'll never forget rounding that corner on the northbound A1 and catching my first glimpse. Amazing. You should bring Alicja down for the weekend, Newcastle has a lot to offer.
Great video Steve . I've walked across those bridges too and the Swing Bridge is my favourite...Also been in the pubs you passed their interior is wonderful....Defo needs a return visit one day for a pub tour 😂😂😂
Great to see you in my area. I used to cycle that route you’ve walked. You really need to see some sights in Northumberland. Bamburgh beach, seahouses and a puffin cruise. Alnwick castle and gardens too.
What a great video Steve, lovely to see such iconic sights...the Tyne bridges and the angel of the north also I suppose St James Park!!. The angel stirs the soul just like the Kelpie's up near Falkirk.Stay safe mate.
After a month or so of watching your excellent videos, and you visiting the various parts of Scotland I wander to as often as I can, never did I imagine my own Town of Gateshead would be in one of your videos Steve!❤
Fantastic video again Steve, thank you. I actually like Newcastle more than London having lived north of London in Harrow as well as living briefly in Otterburn north of Newcastle. It's got a fantastic mall at The Metro Center and the nice thing about the Angel of the North is that it can be briefly spotted on the train. My niece Sophie and her husband live nearby in Prudhoe and I love going into Newcastle, especially around Christmas. Thanks for your wonderful videos.
I liked the football shop and the black & white shirts. Reminds me of a Scottish team I mention now and again. 🐼 It was great to see the Angel of the North up close. I've only ever seen it from a distance from a train. Thanks for sharing.
For those of us who live south of the Watford Gap, St James' Park is either a green space in the middle of London or an underground station on the District Line. I was therefore somewhat perplexed to read that you were proposing a walk from London to Newcastle. Having watched your video my worries were unfounded.
Loving in Australia, it’s nice to see the city of my birth. Was there last March for the 1st time in 8 years and went to the Angel. Doubt I’ll ever go back now but great video.
So nice to see you visit Newcastle. On our next trip over that was going to possibly be a stop off place for a night on the way back to London. And with all your travelling I can't believe I already knew before you about the Castle there. I blame all my research I do before I visit a place. I love all the bridges there and the waterfront is beautiful! I sure hope we get to explore it too. That was quite the walk, not sure I would have lasted but glad you sacrificed your feet and heart to bring us that! 😀
Another great video. The other day I watched a video walking from Victoria Station past Buckingham Palace and down the length of St. James' park in London. So with that in mind, and being a remedial geography student, I was thinking of a MUCH longer walk. 😀 On our trip to Scotland and the north back in 2000 we came upon The Angel of the North having never heard of it, this giant presence materializing out of the clouds. This was before smartphones and not long after its completion, so it remained a bit of a mystery for a few days.
Great video, angel built in my hometown of Hartlepool, just 40 minutes down the coast. They pulled it up the motorway. We cheated and drove there the last time we saw it. Magnificent cathedral of St James, the impressive gateway of Tyne Bridge and unbelievable statue of the angel. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it
Great walk thanks Steve. I worked up that way once, most of our crew were put up in Newcastle but I stayed in Alnmouth so I didn't get to see the city at all. Totally fell in love with the Northumbrian coast, on bucket list to go back there, those white sandy beaches were just stunning. Maybe you & Alicja could do that coast one holiday, that would be awesome as it's stunning.
I lived in Newcastle and Gateshead for six years from the 80's to early 90's. It's my favourite city in the world and I go back as often as I can. Thanks so much for making and sharing this fabulous video. Many memories were brought back.
I think the most handsome pub in Newcastle is the Crown Posada. I’ve not been for a while but the sound system was a Dansette record player on the bar. And you know when you see something and you can’t quite believe so you look again? Middle of the day, a woman…erm…manually assisting a bloke while stood at the bar.
We explored Newcastle the day before going on the mini cruise, but we also explored all the coastal villages and towns in Northumberland, both Newcastle and Northumberland completely blew us away with incredible beauty and such friendly people. We absolutely fell in love with the area.. if you ever get the time, instead of driving through or passing at speed on a train, take some time and explore Northumberland, both coast and inland.
@@frankmaxwell5193 Seahouses, Craster, Alnwich and Alnmouth, Warkworth, Rothbury for Cragside, Belsay for the Hall and amazing Quarry Garden, Corbridge for the Roman town, Hexham for the Abbey, and, and, and,
That was a nicely planned and executed walk. I have travelled through Newcastle plenty of times by train mostly but really must take some time to visit it properly.
So close to me mate, you entered the dark side of the north east as a mackem though ... Enjoyed non the less but if you are ever around here again, I'd advise you visit either further up the coast or Durham, just one more stop on the train from Newcastle (10/15 mins) That building btw is Gateshead Old Town Hall - think it isn't used as regularly now but it still hosts events etc ... Fun fact - it's the only surviving purpose-built Victorian town hall in Tyne and Wear and is one of only five comparable listed Victorian town halls in the North East.
I'm sorry Steve, but you know I can't bring myself to praise Newcastle for obvious reasons! (Great vid damn it!) Might I suggest the next time you're in these neck of the woods to try some of the UK's best city beaches? Start north of the Tyne on Tynemouth Beach, head to North Shields Fish Quay and catch the ferry across to South Shields. There's a great beach there, as there is at nearby Marsden (the Marsden rock is an awesome sight), then finish off along at the glorious stretches of sand at Sunderland's Seaburn and Roker beaches. You could complete your day with a walk along the Victorian engineering marvel that is the huge Roker Pier, guarding the entrance to the mouth of the River Wear and one of the best dolphin watching hotspots in the country 👍
Glad you enjoyed your walk from SJP to the Angel. I've been a resident of Gateshead for thirty years now, but my dad was from Montrose and I remember spending a year in school there between ages 5-6 in 1964-5. You've been told the building with the clock is the old Town Hall but you also pass the new one when you talk about catching the 61/21 bus back - it's the building in the background. Also when you come off the Tyne Bridge and walk down to the Swing Bridge you pass, half way down, where there used to be an old pub, The Queen's Head. That was were the Councillor's used to meet whilst the other Town Hall was being built before 1868. So your little jaunt took you last the last three 'talking shops' for Gateshead politicians without you knowing and with another pub thrown in for good measure!
Great video of my home city , sadly the swing bridge hasn't swung for a while , it needs some serious money spending on its mechanism , the "blinking eye" bridge opposite the Sage building is well worth a look when it tilts open , only type in the world last I heard
Hi Steve, excellent video as usual. I was a bit late in viewing this. Not too sure if it's been mentioned in comments but the pub you went past The Central forms part of the swanky Railway Quarter. 2 micropubs Microbus and Axis. Also two traditional pubs Station East and The Central. A new wine bar and swanky Doughnut shop. Everything's swanky down in the quarter. Hopefully you'll make a journey around the north east for the other micropubs. Cheers
You’re full of surprises Steve, I’m not familiar with Newcastle at all but it looks very impressive with so many bridges, bridges and bars just up your street 😅 I can say I’ve passed ‘The Angel of the North’ some years ago on the motorway….now that is impressive….I love the Geordie accent almost as much as the Scottish! Well done 👏 hope you didn’t get lost on the way home 🤔
Great stuff Steve you were only approx 30 minutes from were I live know Newcastle very well love to join you if you come back to do the pub Newcastle n Gateshead is awesome for pubs the key side on the Tyne is well worth a visit you both will have to do the north riding walk Whitby to Scarborough coast route great video keep them coming sir
I rode the Coast to Coast on a mountain bike from west to east back around 2000 - Whitehaven to Tynemouth. We rode mostly off road, the eastern section was on bike paths. We went past the the Angle of the North - I think we were down in the valley looking up at it. It is really stunning! Thanks for this video - it brings back great memories! And welcome home!
That was a great wee trek Steve, I've been through Newcastle so many times on the train but never got off. Some lovely railway arches and other great buildings well worth seeing. I think you might have got confused with the railway bridges though, the high level one (with cars below) is for the Sunderland and Durham coast line, while the most inland railway bridge, the King Edward VII, is the main line to London. Thanks for letting us see more of this city.
Good video Steve. I booked the ferry on the back of your last video for my hols in April. Looked at Aug too and prices go mental. 😮 keep on moving buddy. 9/10

Cheers Derrick!
is that a 90 degree angle or 180 degree angle

Steve. Thanks for another video. I find them very engaging. Cheers.
Every single video you post inspires me. Thank you for sharing so many interesting places.
Thanks so much Lisa!!!
@@steve-marsh thank YOU!
That was fantastic Steve !!! Well done !!! Thank you for doing it for us...:):):)
Always room for a Beer or two Steve... :-))
You're spoiling us this week!! Extra video. Thanks Steve my favourite RUclipsr
