I liked some of the mecha designs at least. Robots that eat human flesh- Seen that in Screamers. Peter Weller's character explained that pieces are broken down and processed internally- fat rendered for lubricating oil, stomach fluids and electolytes for batteries, that sort of thing. The film Virus had a similar theme, just that 'eating' wasn't involved.
I'm so glad that, in the UK, our law was changed so that copywriters can't quote just good parts of a review comment - they now have to quote the whole thing along with a proper accreditation for its source.
To be fair though... SWAT Kats never really had much of a story, or ongoing storyline. I re-watched it not long ago, and all I kept thinking was, "Hey, I remember this guy... Wait, they met him before? When? How? This is the first time he appeared!" And that thought kept going with almost every new villain -_- Still, it holds a special place of love in my heart. If for no other reason the animation was top notch, the music was epic, and the Deputy mayor may have turned me into a furry :p

I was curious and looked up the actor who plays Geist, and it is Jason Beck. He did a couple minor roles, including a bouncer in Seinfeld, but he is mainly known for M.D. Geist 1 and 2. That explains why he hasn't had much of a career and the last thing he did was in 2001, which was a very minor role (a nameless character) in the film, Imposter. So, yeah... He started with M.D. Geist and it was also the only thing he was officially known for. Sucks to be him.
Well, that's in part because he died in 2000 from lung cancer. I did a little research on him when I used to write for an anime review site years ago, and he seemed like a generally swell guy.

I know alot of the context is being ignored. Md Geist 2 has more complicated story than it really needs. MD Geist is a crazy battle maniac that cant think about not fighting. He unleashed an army of killer robots to fight. MD Krauser is supposedly sane. His scientist buddy isnt actually loyal. He has a pet cyborg that he uses to uses to capture Geist(that fails). The pet cyborg dude even has some character. He is loyal to the scientist, doesnt like humans, but by the end actually saves some humans. Pooping robots? I Think they just process biological materials as a fuel source. They eat humans so once they finish killing off every human they run out of power. In the first film the Death Force was a MAD type weapon to kill everyone in case the Regular Army(dudes without mechs) lost and the ova makes it pretty clear they are losing. That part gets weird. If i remember right it was because the President got killed so it activated automatically when it wasnt so clear one side was losing completely.
Apparently, during one of the filming sessions for a Nostalgia Critic movie, Noah and Doug's brother, Rob were constantly quoting Dune to the point where Doug was about to kill someone since he hated the movie so much. Something along those lines. When Sage wanted to use the line, the first person to come in to mind to react to it was Doug. They asked him to react to it and he said "sure".
Ok I know this is way overdue and I'm sure it's been said before a few times in the comics I'm too lazy to read right now, but 100 episodes of any show is a big deal and you deserve to feel proud that you made it this far. That is an achievement and I hope you make it to the next milestone, whatever number you feel that is.
I bought this on VHS back when it came out. I think in order to understand the appeal of this movie or Vampire hunter D or Fist of the North Star or any of the Anime at the time you have to remember that cartoons at this point in time where made for kids and toy lines. Yes GI Joe and other cartoons shot lasers but they rarely hit anything human. All of the sudden this stuff comes out and man ultra violence and because it's animation they can do just about anything. I remember seeing the end of the first part of MD Geist and being blown away that he released the Death Force you just didn't see things like that in American cinema at the time everything fallowed the hero's journey. Just like how Ken's brother wins at the end of Fist of the North Star things like that just didn't happen in movies not in America. It was the ideal that the rules where being thrown out the window that made this stuff so appealing not just the violence or the animation quality. To put it blunt you just had to be there.
While this review is gut-bustingly funny, and he makes it perfectly clear how "so-bad-it's-good" M.D. Geist is, I will admit it is a bit awkward hearing Sage saying Geist is voiced by "Meth-Head Garfield", mostly because Geist's English voice actor, Jason Beck, passed away due to lung cancer. Though to the guy's credit, he rolled with playing Geist, to the point where he was Geist as the recorded operator voice for Central Park Media's office phone.
The whole "VA passed away with lung problems" thing isn't that big of a deal anymore.Not after how much of an overreactive bullshit the Nostalgia Critic got for Mako back in the day. The guy became sick with cancer, and a reviewer made a semi-related joke, while most likely not even knowing about said guy's condition.It happened before, no reason to cause a scene about it again.
Akira Special Edition from 2001 is a 2-disc set and disc 2 is just bonus features. Not sure if the release in question was from before that (in fact, not even sure if the comment was just trolling), but it was the first thing that came to mind and I confirmed it.

Am I the only one who loves the director's cut and the soundtrack? Only part 1... 2 is unwatchable. It's straight action and testosterone, despite all of it's flaws. Maybe because I saw it young but to this day, that final 1 on 1 fight with the robot, the twist ending, and Geists' signature face crush make me happy as hell. And of course... That sick gold and black power armor with the bazooka.

Thanks for this review! Geist 1 & 2 were my first "adult" animes I have watched back in '98. I was a kid and amazed by the gory and mech designs. It's a guilty pleasure for me and I love it, despite the weird ass plot. Watched them at 1 am in the morning and not having internet back then I imagined there to be a 3rd part of the series. Apparently there isn't one, but maybe I will do one =D Glad to see so many Geist fans in the comments, cheers!
If you're an MD Geist diehard, then it is most wise to track down the three-part comic book adaptation of the OVA that CPM had commissioned back in the mid-1990s - it expands the story to the director's original vision (comparable to the Director's Cut version) and CPM also commissioned a prequel to the OVA called "MD Geist: Ground Zero", another triple-issue comic book that explains Geist's back history and how he got shitcanned into orbit. I have both and as awesome as the original OVA is, the comic books are better.
I honestly wish Geist was legitimately good. I love the art style and a lot of the ideas they had, but we all know it's horribly written. It would've been cooler to focus more on Geist and his relationship to the Regular army- maybe at first he helps them because he's one of them, the Death Force was created by the Nexrum to defeat the Reular army, so they go to stop it, but Geist activates it to get revenge on the army for locking him up or something like that! The twist would've worked better that way: you think he's helping them because he was created to, but it's revealed he want to take them out for imprisoning them. Then for Geist 2, Krauzer is helping some survivors of the Regular army so he wants to kill Geist for releasing death force just something coherent that makes sense. Still love Geist and it's soundtrack tho XD
this is very late but it's really worth noting that the Comic adaptation and the prequel comics go leagues and miles to better explaining everything, and does so in ways that work well alongside the actual OVA. (MD Geist 2 notwithstanding, though it's still simple enough to follow that nobody knew Geist was free until the doctor had the cyborg check the remains of the brain palace, which seems like they should've animated that happening.) I'm honestly kind of enamored with MD Geist. It's not inherently great but it's actually very simple in what it wants to do: Worlds Biggest Asshole escapes from space prison to prove he's World's Biggest Asshole by making the apocalypse worse. And it's very good at making that wario-esque plot fun to watch DESPITE it's animation errors.
I think Geist has the kind of quality that can inspire to imagine it in better ways. As you said, it has many good ideas, and I can't stop imagining a more coherent and better told story with the elements provided by the animes.
Aaaaaand then what was actually accomplished of Star Craft Ghosts actually did come out in the form of a leak. Behold, time makes fools of us all. Sort of.

Years late to respond, but better late than never, I dare say. Ya, M.D. Geist isn't 'terrible', but is hardly a masterpiece. Just as the west has "B" movies, I'd say Geist is a "B" OVA title for anime. There are some things though I do wish to clarify probably in regards to the scenes or Geist's behavior, which probably helps clarify some things. 1) No, he's not gay. He just has no sexual drive. This is clarified in part 2 by Breston. "The only thing buried in his mind is the absolute desire for pure battle." "The majority of Geist's mental faculties are dedicated to expanding the limits of his fighting condition! The result causes a spontanious generation of his cells! Because he's an MDS, created specifically for fighting, this is quite a natural reaction!" It means that, aside from the basics to stay alive, Geist pretty much lives, and breathes, to fight. He craves NOTHING else. This also explains the bullet he removes from his forehead, it's heavily implied that as his cells 'grow and evolve' and have that they generate in battle, he MAY have partial regenerative factors. It also explains why after he was knocked out by Eagle, he woke up suddenly in the aircraft to kill the Death Force drone. 2) Geist may be insane, but he has a weird code of honor. He will NOT directly hurt or kill a civilian. You see this in the opening of part 2. Despite the guy being chained to the car, the car struck the DF at an angle as to not kill him, and land, allowing him to later be unchained, as crazy as that sounds. It's the fact he also let what's her name go from part 1, not killing her. This is also seen by the end of part 2. Geist STOPPED himself before he struck the boy. Was he stopped because Krauser impaled him, hard to say, but considering the boy would've been hit first, Geist had time to react. Remember it was Krauser who impaled the boy. Geist never struck him. The english dialogue that Geist says is "You are not qualified to be a God, Krauser!" Though in the japanese dialogue Geist says "You are not a hero....boy." Geist may have a monster, but he was an 'honorable' monster in part 2, in a strange way. Had Krauser succeeded in his plan, would have put himself on a throne so high, he'd believe he was a God. For as much 'good' as Krauser was doing, he himself was hardly the good guy. But that's just my take on the OVA, to each, their own.
Is that ending music an original recording? If not what is it at first I thought the Chords sounded like the Black Rebel motorcycle clubs version of Let the day begin, in a good way.

I think in order to understand the appeal of this movie or Vampire hunter D or Fist of the North Star or any of the Anime at the time you have to remember that cartoons at this point in time where made for kids and toy lines. Yes GI Joe and other cartoons shot lasers but they rarely hit anything human. All of the sudden this stuff comes out and man ultra violence and because it's animation they can do just about anything. I remember seeing the end of the first part of MD Geist and being blown away that he released the Death Force you just didn't see things like that in American cinema at the time everything fallowed the hero's journey. Just like how Ken's brother wins at the end of Fist of the North Star things like that just didn't happen in movies not in America. It was the ideal that the rules where being thrown out the window that made this stuff so appealing not just the violence or the animation quality. To put it blunt you just had to be there.
He was doing God's work. This is awesome and u are awesome for bringing it to your audience.
While this review is gut-bustingly funny, and he makes it perfectly clear how "so-bad-it's-good" M.D. Geist is, I will admit it is a bit awkward hearing Sage saying Geist is voiced by "Meth-Head Garfield", mostly because Geist's English voice actor, Jason Beck, passed away due to lung cancer. Though to the guy's credit, he rolled with playing Geist, to the point where he was Geist as the recorded operator voice for Central Park Media's office phone.
The whole "VA passed away with lung problems" thing isn't that big of a deal anymore.Not after how much of an overreactive bullshit the Nostalgia Critic got for Mako back in the day.
The guy became sick with cancer, and a reviewer made a semi-related joke, while most likely not even knowing about said guy's condition.It happened before, no reason to cause a scene about it again.
Akira Special Edition from 2001 is a 2-disc set and disc 2 is just bonus features. Not sure if the release in question was from before that (in fact, not even sure if the comment was just trolling), but it was the first thing that came to mind and I confirmed it.

The guy who wrote this, also wrote the screenplay for the Gaiking remake and Digimon Xros Wars, so he isn't a bad writer at least.
MD Geist is impressive for the fact that Koichi Ohata was only 23 when he made it, and he looks back on it pretty fondly even if he had to draw most of it by himself.
So glad you got around to this one man, it had to happen and I'm damn sure happy it did!

I think that Geist used the kid as a human shield, thinking that Krauser wouldn't kill him, or that Krauser impaled the kid when he wasn't looking and only realized after stabbing Geist? It's a really bad scene regardless but that's my possible interpretations?
Am I the only one who loves the director's cut and the soundtrack? Only part 1... 2 is unwatchable. It's straight action and testosterone, despite all of it's flaws. Maybe because I saw it young but to this day, that final 1 on 1 fight with the robot, the twist ending, and Geists' signature face crush make me happy as hell. And of course... That sick gold and black power armor with the bazooka.

Thanks for this review! Geist 1 & 2 were my first "adult" animes I have watched back in '98. I was a kid and amazed by the gory and mech designs. It's a guilty pleasure for me and I love it, despite the weird ass plot. Watched them at 1 am in the morning and not having internet back then I imagined there to be a 3rd part of the series. Apparently there isn't one, but maybe I will do one =D Glad to see so many Geist fans in the comments, cheers!
If you're an MD Geist diehard, then it is most wise to track down the three-part comic book adaptation of the OVA that CPM had commissioned back in the mid-1990s - it expands the story to the director's original vision (comparable to the Director's Cut version) and CPM also commissioned a prequel to the OVA called "MD Geist: Ground Zero", another triple-issue comic book that explains Geist's back history and how he got shitcanned into orbit. I have both and as awesome as the original OVA is, the comic books are better.
I honestly wish Geist was legitimately good. I love the art style and a lot of the ideas they had, but we all know it's horribly written. It would've been cooler to focus more on Geist and his relationship to the Regular army- maybe at first he helps them because he's one of them, the Death Force was created by the Nexrum to defeat the Reular army, so they go to stop it, but Geist activates it to get revenge on the army for locking him up or something like that!
The twist would've worked better that way: you think he's helping them because he was created to, but it's revealed he want to take them out for imprisoning them. Then for Geist 2, Krauzer is helping some survivors of the Regular army so he wants to kill Geist for releasing death force just something coherent that makes sense.
Still love Geist and it's soundtrack tho XD
this is very late but it's really worth noting that the Comic adaptation and the prequel comics go leagues and miles to better explaining everything, and does so in ways that work well alongside the actual OVA. (MD Geist 2 notwithstanding, though it's still simple enough to follow that nobody knew Geist was free until the doctor had the cyborg check the remains of the brain palace, which seems like they should've animated that happening.)
I'm honestly kind of enamored with MD Geist. It's not inherently great but it's actually very simple in what it wants to do: Worlds Biggest Asshole escapes from space prison to prove he's World's Biggest Asshole by making the apocalypse worse. And it's very good at making that wario-esque plot fun to watch DESPITE it's animation errors.
I think Geist has the kind of quality that can inspire to imagine it in better ways. As you said, it has many good ideas, and I can't stop imagining a more coherent and better told story with the elements provided by the animes.

Years late to respond, but better late than never, I dare say.
Ya, M.D. Geist isn't 'terrible', but is hardly a masterpiece. Just as the west has "B" movies, I'd say Geist is a "B" OVA title for anime. There are some things though I do wish to clarify probably in regards to the scenes or Geist's behavior, which probably helps clarify some things.
1) No, he's not gay. He just has no sexual drive. This is clarified in part 2 by Breston. "The only thing buried in his mind is the absolute desire for pure battle." "The majority of Geist's mental faculties are dedicated to expanding the limits of his fighting condition! The result causes a spontanious generation of his cells! Because he's an MDS, created specifically for fighting, this is quite a natural reaction!" It means that, aside from the basics to stay alive, Geist pretty much lives, and breathes, to fight. He craves NOTHING else. This also explains the bullet he removes from his forehead, it's heavily implied that as his cells 'grow and evolve' and have that they generate in battle, he MAY have partial regenerative factors. It also explains why after he was knocked out by Eagle, he woke up suddenly in the aircraft to kill the Death Force drone.
2) Geist may be insane, but he has a weird code of honor. He will NOT directly hurt or kill a civilian. You see this in the opening of part 2. Despite the guy being chained to the car, the car struck the DF at an angle as to not kill him, and land, allowing him to later be unchained, as crazy as that sounds. It's the fact he also let what's her name go from part 1, not killing her. This is also seen by the end of part 2. Geist STOPPED himself before he struck the boy. Was he stopped because Krauser impaled him, hard to say, but considering the boy would've been hit first, Geist had time to react. Remember it was Krauser who impaled the boy. Geist never struck him. The english dialogue that Geist says is "You are not qualified to be a God, Krauser!" Though in the japanese dialogue Geist says "You are not a hero....boy."
Geist may have a monster, but he was an 'honorable' monster in part 2, in a strange way. Had Krauser succeeded in his plan, would have put himself on a throne so high, he'd believe he was a God. For as much 'good' as Krauser was doing, he himself was hardly the good guy.
But that's just my take on the OVA, to each, their own.
