    One of the best looking SSTOs I've ever seen! Kinda reminds me of that shuttle from Avatar.

  • @keithrushforth4019
    @keithrushforth4019 2 года назад +12

    One thing I've found useful with Kerbal space planes is rocket assisted take off. Basically I have a couple of small solid rockets slung under the wings that help accelerate it down the runway, and get it into the air. When the solids burn out I drop them in the sea, and then fly it like a normal air breathing SSTO.

    • @vaos3712
      @vaos3712  2 года назад +6

      sadly that would be considered a stage and therefore not an SSTO 🙁

    • @keithrushforth4019
      @keithrushforth4019 2 года назад +4

      @@vaos3712 Yes strictly speaking it's not an SSTO,. But it serves the same purpose of getting stuff into space cheaply. Using a couple of small solids to accelerate means I need far fewer Rapier engines, as the Rapier is very inefficient at low speeds. And fewer engines also reduces the mass of the actual plane, therefore increasing it's delta v.
      Also it''s fun making like a bomber and dropping stuff in the ocean just off the end of the runway.

      Well the Star raker also would have used expandable landing gear on takeoff since it was a lot lighter on landing it ditched a few of the „Wheels“ after takeoff.

    I love how the Raptor offers a docking port and crew quarters. It's that tiny little detail to round out the whole design and make it feel more real. I could totally see this as a design McDonnell Douglas, Boeing or Northrop Grumman came up.
    That massive cargo-bay with its doors looks absolutely rad as well.

  • @tixeright9120
    @tixeright9120 2 года назад +1

    To overcome the rocket-exhaust problem from forward sitting the engines, I put them at the end of wings, or at least midway, and since wings are absolute shit at supporting weight, especially a lot of weight under a lot of thrust, and just invite the kraken at every stage of the mission, I use all the extra durable structural parts instead, sometimes even off-angle fuel tanks, because when you're building an ssrt worrying about drag is for chumps. And you use wingy-bits where you need them for control and hopefully a soft landing. Really what you got to worry about with my designs is heating, so I end up using heat shields and radiators galore, because the things come crashing back thru the atmosphere like bricks until the air is thick enough to give wings control. Skipping off the atmosphere, they are not. Half the time they don't even need airbracks, because they can just pancake the atmosphere whenever they need to slow down.

    Your approach is impractical but beautiful 😊. My approach is a practical but not that good looking air breathing SSTO that can lift more than twice the weight up, depending on the implementation, but it's much harder to fly plus it uses a ton of engines and creates lots of lag 😅
    I will upload a video of it at some point.

They don’t break connection mind you, but The docking ports are still pulled apart from The enormous amount of Lift generated by the cargo bay doors.

Question though your ksp creations are mostly Ssto's and SSRT's, I havent seen you build many 2 stage rockets like falcon 9 ect. Is there a reson for why that is. Anyways just had my morning coffe with your video which is almost like a religion at this point and I always feel inspired afterwards. Anyways love you channel and keep up the great work .

    Do your winged SSRTs actually make use of their wings on ascent or are they mostly for landing?
    I'm asking bc I have been thinking about the concept of a winged rocket that is basically underpowered to reach orbit but can do so using the lift of the wings. This would allow you to use less engines or engines that aren't exactly optimized for atmospheric flight. Most of my concepts revolved around trying to get the maximum amount of weight into orbit using a single rhino engine. I haven't really gotten to a point where it's actually better than using other means of achieving orbit. I haven't made any calculations but I guess the added weight from the wings bascially eats up any weight saved from not using more engines.

    • @vaos3712
      @vaos3712  2 года назад

      If you’re looking for efficiency then perhaps make something that looks more like the x-33. for me personally, I have noticed that you need more Thrust to weight ratio if you intend on launching straight up in comparison to launching sideways and gaining speed for lift. having wings allows you to achieve lift with less thrust. launching at a 40° to 45° angle helps not only gain altitude but allows your craft to gain speed at the same time with only about 1.3 TWR. Plus it helps slow down the craft much better than not having any wings at all during reentry.
