This was my first Lanthimos movie and it really took me by surprise. As a fan of dry comedy I got a huge kick out of it. Colin Farrell is like a comedy powerhouse.
"Out of all the stories that could have led to, I was not expecting that one." Just play that sentence on repeat for the next 90 minutes, and that should be sufficient.

So glad you're covering this bro! One of my favourite A24 films. The monotone, pathetic absurdity Yorgos brought to this film was weirdly beautiful haha!
There are definitely several things going on in this movie, but one things sticks out for me. I think there is a reference to how, when you are single your friends in relationships want to hook you up with anyone so you can be like them, while when you start a new relationship, your single friends can low-key want to prevent the relationship from happening so you can be like them. This has been blown up out of all proportion to the point of farce with state-enforced mandatory relationships in mainstream society (humanity would end if the state took the other side) and dissidents ruthlessly enforcing singledom on the members if their society. Then there is the idea of people grasping on to anyone and living a lie just to avoid being alone. There is a 1984-style dystopia where just being a natural human with natural feelings is not allowed referencing what modernity is doing to us. There might also be a strange conservation message, that so many species have gone extinct, the "Useless" people are turned into animals to save those species. The ending seemed to say, "Just do what you have to do to fit in while getting whatever happiness you can." Kind of bleak. This was a very odd film. Up until the dog scene, I though it was some kind of dry comedy. After that scene, it was clearly not. This is one of those movies for people who think they have seen everything and want something different without resorting to the types of films that are banned in many countries.
The dialogue delivery in The Lobster is reminiscent of a Hal Hartley film, although the styles of films are very different. I doubt his films will ever come up from your Patreon members, but his Long Island Trilogy (The Unbelievable Truth, Trust & Simple Men) is so idiosyncratic, and so urbanely funny, that you should put them on your future watch list.
Yorgos started in and largely popularized the new Greek Weirdwave Film style. It seems to all be very big on abstracting the human experience and the absurdity of it all, especially via the stiff awkward dialogue and extreme situations. It honestly rhymes very well with something like the Swedish Roy Andersson's Living Trilogy; namely entries like A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence. Edit: also watch I'm Thinking of Ending Things!!!!!!!
I adore this film it's so darkly funny, disturbing and surprisingly relatable. Yorgos Lanthimos is probably my favourite (pun intended) director right now.
You should watch Dogtooth. That was one of Yorgos earliest film. Just as good and has hilarious moments. That’s how I got to know about this guy and his great/weird films.
It's an amazing parody/surrealist take on dating culture, especially with dating apps. The entire world is based around hetero normative dating culture. Gotta have the right clothes, say the right words, you can't be too emotional, gotta clean your fingernails, etc. And if you don't have common interests the app won't match you. And if you can't find a partner, you're not really a person anymore. It's wildly good!!!
This movie is a slow burn in a good way. It’s better to take it all in to establish the logic during the first viewing then really think about it afterwards. It was hard to do both at the same time
This film basically is about pressures and expectations that society puts on Relationship. The antiquated thinking that you should be married and have a family by a certain age. If you don’t then something is wrong with you. You see people forced to lie and pair with the wrong person, because they think it’s what’s expected of them, not being true to themselves. Then you see the extreme opposite on the singles side. Weird story, but great. Basically every one of the directors films.
Been a while since I've seen this, but I think there might have been a line early on where he said the dog was his brother. I could be wrong though, since I've only seen this once
Was filmed for the most part in Ireland. That shopping centre (mall) is 5 mins from me (Blanchardstown) as is their walk to it under Junction 6 of M50 motorway. 53.3832588, -6.3641363
If you want more straight up weird stuff, you should check out David Lynch's films! That guy's mind is absolutely insane. Since you've already watched Mulholland Dr. and Blue Velvet, I recommend watching Twin Peaks! It was a TV show created by him and Mark Frost in the 90s, it was cancelled after season 2 but they made a prequel film titled Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. They recently revived the show for a third season back in 2017 - Twin Peaks: The Return. And to be honest, that season was one of the greatest artistic experiences I've ever had. It'd be great to see you react to the show, not many people do it on RUclips. That final episode will live in my mind forever.
When I first saw this in the cinema, I was newly single for the first time in 8 years, and I really saw similarities in how friends were being with me now I was single. "We'll find someone for you! / You'll find someone soon!" and not really understanding that a person is fine to be single for a period of time. And equally, when I became friends with other single people, if I tried to get together with another single people, I was equally ostracised by leaving the friendship group that had bonded on our single-hood. You couldn't win either way.

@@clarabelle6472 going to have to agree to disagree there but I do understand why some people don’t like it. I still think it can be appreciated from a technical perspective even if the story doesn’t work for you.
I think this movie is obviously a study of love. One side wants to force love and the other, in reaction to that force, wants to resist love and affection at all costs. If you try and force affection it will never work, it has to happen naturally. Love should never be controlled because it is impossible to truly understand and control. If you try and force love nothing will workout just like at the end where he thinks that they both need to be blind in order to love each other. Not everything in love has to be perfect because the nature of perfection is unnatural.
I love your reactions, but I'm slightly confused. Your reaction to "Killing of a Sacred Deer" makes references to "The Lobster", but you reacted to that one 3 years ago and this one is 2 years ago?
