RIP Ronald Lee Ermey. He was one of the greatest actors that ever lived. He was never supposed to be in Full Metal Jacket but glad that Stanley Kubrick changed his mind. Still one of my all time favorite movies.

On page 382 in the book "The Battle of Okinawa: The Blood and the Bomb" by George Feifer, a wounded Marine from the battle talked about what happened during a visit by John Wayne. Wayne was pretty clueless about the realities of men at war. Here's an excerpt: "Wearing a fancy cowboy outfit, down to spurs and pistols, the celluloid hero greeted the wounded with a self-satisfied "Hiya, guys!" -- which was greeted with silence. Then someone booed. "Suddenly everyone was booing."

Oh, I don't think John Wayne meant to be disrespectful or that he's a bad person. I'm just saying he wasn't really the hard, man's man everyone likes to think he was. He played a good one on film, but he was otherwise pretty far removed from the tough realities that actually made men hard. The account in the book was actually in a medical ward in Hawaii where a lot of the wounded from the battle were shipped.

    • @weak1ings
