Shame we never got that sequel. The Thing 2 was supposed to be a massive improvement over the 1st game. And the concept art added spice here.
Yeah but hey at least we still got this and Carpenter has gone on record that this was and still is the canon sequel to the movie.

Having the test as a single-unit hypo is a good idea for gameplay. The glass "breaking" whenever the blood reacts violenly, thus proving the tested are also "things", is a good touch to the axiety- inducement necessary for this genre.
John carpenter once mentioned during an interview that he'd actually be on board with another body-horror mind-f### game series known as "Dead Space", a personal favorite of mine.
It's technically meant to be a reference to the OG film since the "chemical" in question is likely meant to be something that has heat applied to the sample and in the movie, the blood of a thing reacts violently to heat.
@cursedhawkins1305 that's true. I imagine otherwise it's some kind of acid compound, something that burns the blood.
Macready coming out of nowhere with the heli would’ve lead nicely to a sequel. Too bad we never got one.
Funfact, This game are Sequel for the thing 1982 movie. They already plan make another the thing video game but they cancel it

15:06 okay maybe there's something else in the game that explains this away, but i'm pretty sure the alien should still very much be feeling IMMENSE PAIN from being ON FIRE. it certainly never liked being on fire in the film! so uh, it just suddenly having zero reaction to being set ablaze here (and then _monologueing_ ) is... kinda weird.

I am a huge John Carpenter fan. I bought this when it released. Stayed up all night. My opinion: Excellent for nostalgia and continuity after the film was pretty good... but trying to keep your fireteam to hold position and NOT walk into your gunfire was pretty darn annoying. I give it a 7 / 10 overall.
They probably deserved it since there was always a good chance they had been replaced by the thing
Well, back then I wasn't ready to understand deeper, but this game did something extremely serious that none of The movies ever did: Opened a communication Channel with The creature! For the Very First time in history The creature talked as being really itself and not disguised! (Final Boss). If this is Canon, Which I believe It is, then It's indeed an amazing deed!
I agree, it demonstrates that the Thing has actual intelligence and is not just a mindless parasitic monster, and that sequence finally reveals its motives(only if it’s canon, of course).

I love how the blood test explodes and everybody's just chilling for a second like that didn't just happen, then all hell breaks loose

I don’t think could bear the body horror 😭 The movie scared the crap out of me as a kid! Gave me nightmare for weeks! Still, would be kinda interesting to see how it would turn out.

I remember playing it on PS2 it was so hard on leaving the very first enemy

Always reminded me of Extermination (2001) even though that's the spinoff. Similarly imaginative grotesque horror, but it actually tried to deal with contamination as a timer and health bar, inventive but also difficult, not to mention a few plotholes lol.
YOOOOO I LOVE EXTERMINATION! i _never_ hear/see anybody else talk about that game! the monster designs in that game are just *chef kiss* beautiful. and yeah the whole bit of having to manage your health plus infection level was a neat idea. and i loved the detail of like, going back to areas from earlier in the game to see just how much the fleshy infection has spread, really put into perspective how out of control the whole H0213 thing was getting
@@attackfrogs I know right? Forgot I had it for years because I thought it was a resident evil ripoff lol. Loved how they shown the progression of it spreading through the plant, differentiating it from just another zombie apocalypse or the Thing by having it actively interact with the environment; while I liked the idea of the infection being a mechanic it always seemed a bit too difficult, but then again I never was good at 3rd person tank controls. But the only thing that bugged me was the ending, because it created one hell of a plot hole from seeming to be rushed.
