    I love your crash tests, except for the fire resistance. I don't really see a point to it because i usually avoid riding on the surface of the sun, or through fireballs. Maybe there is a better way to test heat resistance? Idk

    • @F13SC
      @F13SC 7 лет назад +50

      hmmmm I have seen motorcycles burst into flames on impact. I think the point of it is to see if the gear is going to resist long enough for someone to come pull you out of the flames.

    • @hymn1337
      @hymn1337 7 лет назад +26

      F13SC I could see that. but a motorcycle bursting in to flames will not burn as hot as a torch, and typically if you stick with a bike that impacts hard enough to burst into flames, heat resistance I'd the least of your worries imo. I get what you are saying though

    • @darcyjousset6615
      @darcyjousset6615 7 лет назад +9

      Helmets are not built to be Flame proof. Flame is not heat resistance. That would be fire resistance. You can get very high heats with out flame and you can have low heats with flame. With a flame though you are adding a fuel to the mix and changes the situation entirely. Specially from a torch. As far as getting stuck under a flaming motorcycle after an accident, it is very very slim. You would have a better chance of getting stuck under the flaming car that hit you.

      hymn1337 Not to mention the abrasion test, who cares if your helmet can survive 20 seconds or 35 seconds against a belt sander? Even a highway-speed slide wouldn't last longer than 5-10 seconds

    • @TheBreyHD
      @TheBreyHD 7 лет назад +15

      Eliot Metherell yes but the grinder spinned with 19kph (about 11 mph). If you crash on the highway (i dont know what the speed limits are) with about 60-100 mph and you slide on your helmet its much ruffer than any sandpaper grinder. So indeed i think this test was very useful to show what impact the helmets can take.

    Maybe you guys could rig up a sledgehammer (or similar) to swing freely from a set height for the chin bar test. That would give you the same force each time.

      Hmm yeah - that would be much better! Thanks for the tip . ~RyanF9

      maybe have a better release system for when you drop the helmets to keep the drop height consistent as well as make sure your not adding any force down on the helmets that increase its falling speed

  • @SaturdayWinter

    So the Shoei is 2dbs better at sound proofing, is fire resistant and the visor can withstand 2 more airsoft bullets...yet the Icon Variant did better in abrasion resistance and chin bar strength... yet the Shoei won the better build quality, yet has very minut beneficial traits compared to the Icon....where as the Icon helmet is actually better though for protecting your chin and sliding (abrasion) ...
    So the helmet that can take more actual practical abuse (Sorry but your helmet is never going to burst into flames or be shot at) lost. Lmfao.

      Pebbles in the road hitting the visor. Motorcycling catching fire in an accident. They aren't just tests for fun, they have a logical real life counterpart. Obviously exaggerated, but so are all the tests.

      The shot bit is to represent how it will handle against rocks. Land against one or just one that flew off the road. Cracked my old car winshield once by a random rock flying on the road

    • @trapperb6412
      @trapperb6412 6 лет назад +3

      Yea but I don’t think you’ll have more than one pebble hit the exact same spot more than once and the pellet gun is design to puncture and is going over 500 km (you’d never measure a bullet or pellet or bb's speed using km but rather fps)

    • @Wolham
      @Wolham 5 лет назад +3

      @@trapperb6412 True, but a pellet has no weight behind it, whereas launching face-first into a sharp rock, branch, metal pipe, etcetera might have slightly more oomph to compensate for the lack of speed.

    Hey Ryan, ever think of doing a motorcycle vs non-motorcycle head to head? For example comparing an Icon Overlord to a basic denim/leather non-motorcycle jacket, or a CSA workboot vs a motorcycle boot? The idea being to highlight how much of a difference basic motorcycle gear can make when compared to regular clothes or work gear.

    Having owned the Hornet X2 and now ride the Variant, allow me to retort. Yes, both helmets are very good... and maybe the Hornet X2 is a little "Better". However I found that I quickly hated the Hornet, for two reasons. 1, it felt like I was wearing a Top Hat... The helmet has in firearms terms, a lot of Height Over Bore. It just felt gigantic. 2. While the helmet had a great fit and felt good while wearing it... It felt like it was ripping my ears off my skull when I took it off. In fact, it caused me a great deal of pain. And it actually did cause some soft tissue damage to my left ear, that took almost a month to heal. This is the only helmet that's ever done that to me. So I sold it.
    I now ride the Variant Battlescar, which I think looks better, is just as comfortable - and actually fits my headshape better. And it doesn't rip my ears off... Even with a SENA 20S installed, it's still comfortable. Sure, it's less money, but it's a great helmet.

    Love Helmet vs Helmet idea. I recently got the Hornet X2 in all Black at 50% discount and after trying it out at highway speeds last Sunday I gotta say I'm very pleased with the Fit, Sound, and Comfort and Peripheral visions. Hope to meet up with the F9 crew at your next bike meet whenever-wherever that may be to see how it's faired till then.

      For some reason I only just got the notification on the reply sorry
      I was riding along a suburban road (On a mint NSR-250 btw) at approx 80km/h and a commodore (large sedan) rapidly pulled out about 10-20m in front of me. I had nowhere to go and not enough time to slow down significantly. I was wearing dainese gloves, a dririder jacket and draggins with alpinestars boots. Apparently I bounced up onto the boot lid and then sorta just slid off onto the road at a standstill, so I had no meaningful skin injury - but probably wouldn't have even if I'd been starkers. I still have the helmet, it has some significant paint damage from the impact and a crack running roughly up the middle above the visor that is hard to see, but you can feel the helmet flex in your hands. Some of the foam inside remains noticeably compressed.
      As far as injuries, I broke three metacarpals in my right hand and sustained a complex open book pelvic fracture from, essentially, being "split" by the impact with the tank. Got golden staph in hospital and ended up spending a month in isolation, then another two months in rehab. 14 weeks in hospital and they took the brace off and let me out. I can walk fine (if a little waddly these days) but I still get bad hip pain sometimes. Still ride, albeit not as often as I used to. As I said, I keep the helmet to remind myself that I took a massive head impact and got away without any lasting brain injury, and that life is too short to wear shit protective equipment.
      PS if you have testicles I apologise for making you read that, and yes, it was worse than you're imagining. I sometimes tell people that I got punched in the groin by a car doing 70km/h. ;D

      Hey Adam! Aerodynamics are quite good on both helmets. I would say that the Shoei has better aero, but it's not a *huge* difference. Certainly not twice as good. Your extra $400 mainly goes into build quality and finish. The padding, face shield and vents all feel more "premium" on the Shoei. Some people care about that kind of thing, some don't. ~RyanF9

      Ryan how could you destroy my helmet! Just kidding, I was actually interested to see if my helmet would show up on your reviews (Hornet just for clarity), and i'm surprised at the sound test. I wear earplugs for almost every ride and with them in I can comfortably listen to myself hum away on the highway, or listen to the radio on my headset!
      I ride a Versys 650 with an aftermarket windscreen and even at 100+ I get very little buffeting from the wind, I really like the peak design as it still functions as a regular peak, but without the kite like aerodynamics!
      Another excellent review!

    in my humble opinion icon took that one each won in their own way if only they could take notes from each other and improve their own helmets maybe a icon v2 test? and an arai AND ruroc! lol

    Any chance for a Schuberth modular? Would make me happy to know the slightly ridiculous price adds some safety, not just noise reduction

    Personally I'd rather have the variant it did pretty well and costs so much less than the hornet sorry shoei but I don't have 800 dollars just laying around

    So I got I. An argument with a friend about the grab on the icon variant I know there will be some but he’s trying to say the visor is going to fly off, I know head checks might be a little tricky, but is there anyway you could SAFELY do a speed test on the visors

    Hey Ryan! can you do a KYT sometimes? They're one of the cheapest "motogp" helmet brand so I'm really curious about the quality.

    I think you can ditch the fire resistance. Unless you sleep with your helmet and there's a fire in the bedroom. Maybe you just like watching stuff burn. :D

      Yeah. You can tell it's been winter in Montreal. Although props to you guys for doing not only the crash test stuff, but also continuing to do the "best gear" series ... even AFTER the big Christmas push. Nice to see those continue in what must be a slow period.

    • @FortNine
      @FortNine  7 лет назад

      Hahaha I guess you could call it that. We were Canada's Motorcycle for 7 years I think, then just changed our name to FortNine recently. Pretty long pilot ;) The thing is that Canada's Motorcycle only ever focused on the e-Commerce side of things. Our new love for video came around after the FortNine switch. Cheers! ~RyanF9

    I think because the shoei was more expensive he wanted to make it look better also catches interior of helmet on fire says “ya I think the shoei is more fire resistant”

    • @X85283
      @X85283 5 лет назад

      Yeah the interior is supposed to be flame retardant more than any other part. Imagine if you fell, were unconscious, and gasoline is burning near you. I sure as hell don't want the inside of my helmet catching, you know, the part touching my skin and scalp directly?
