I'm just adding perspective and passing along facts that can be found on line and in old contract books. My pay per hour as skilled trades in 2006 was at $34 per hour. Adjusted for inflation that would be $52 per hour today. At my current rate of $37 per hour I have taken a 30% pay cut. In 2006 GM CEO Rick Wagoner was paid $2.2M, adjusted for inflation that is $3.4M. Mary Barra makes $29M. 8.5 times more than the amount adjusted for inflation. I was a Temp with GM and they charged me $125 union fees from my paycheck back in the 1990s but we had no UAW representation. A scam GM and UAW allowed for years! we were worked to death and if we were late ONCE we would be fired and the Temps would be let go before we could qualify for unemployment benefits. That is how they rolled then, I hope this guy fixes it now because it was abusive and both sides took advantage of people like me that just needed a job. Being hired as a Temp meant we had no benefits either but we paid the same fees as FT employees.
@@rangerguy25 I guess I must be dumb and did not argue with the assembly line foreman and union reps at the now defunct North Tarrytown, NY GM plant 1989-1991 I built the Pontiac Transport and Chevy Lumina. It happened EXACTLY as I told you, and this man is also stating there were abuses against Temp workers so that MIGHT just be a clue for you too. I would not argue with someone there and say they didn't know, had you been there YOU would have known it too. It was either take it or lose decent pay, so most of us took it. Where else would a 20-year-old back then net over $700 a week in 1989? So it was not a battle I won and as they did with all Temps, they just let me go after 6 months, wait another 6 and they would call you back to circumvent the labor laws at the time. I was there for 2 years on and off. In fact, I just remembered, the reason why the UAW did not object to Temps being paid less and doing the same job as FT workers was that they got their fees to shut up and it kind of makes sense when you think about it. Just try and remember I was there. This is not an anecdotal 3rd party tale. Remember the UAW strike in 2019? What was the main reason? The UAW did not want any more Temps, to protect "skilled labor". Though it happened later... How can you even argue the fact the UAW did not even want us there and they loved to charge their UAW fee for nothing for us. I sympathize with the UAW but back then they did not like us. I worked the Toe-in pit, struts, trim, and seat lines.
1990??!!! Damn you talking about over 30 years ago! Trust me, things have changed a lot for temps (for the good)! Don't get me wrong temps are abused, but they get insurance, get paid time & half any thing after 8 hours, they can miss a few days ..etc

I made you aware of the ones I witnessed and that it was happening from 1990 to 2019. My guess is that he’s one of those loons from wsws that has been making up conspiracy theories ever since the candidate they were backing got smashed in the election which is exactly what anyone with any common sense knew would happen since he had only been in the UAW five years and had zero experience.
The membership is upset rightfully so.can you imagine 5 bathroom stahls with only 3 working no paper towel no soap for or over 200 men and women?
Great interview. I can relate completely. Definitely the working man or woman are racing to the bottom. I’m 50 an have less now than I did 10 years ago. People should not have to go backwards the harder they work. The way workers are treated these days is ridiculous. I average about a dollar raise every two years. Yet everything keeps going up 5 times as fast as my pay. Just cause you don’t have a college degree, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get fair compensation
Every union leader needs to echo what Shawn is saying.
Most definitely!
💯💯💯
I'm just adding perspective and passing along facts that can be found on line and in old contract books.
My pay per hour as skilled trades in 2006 was at $34 per hour. Adjusted for inflation that would be $52 per hour today. At my current rate of $37 per hour I have taken a 30% pay cut.
In 2006 GM CEO Rick Wagoner was paid $2.2M, adjusted for inflation that is $3.4M.
Mary Barra makes $29M. 8.5 times more than the amount adjusted for inflation.
My hourly pay would be $600 per hour if it was adjusted at the same rate as Barra's.
Nicely explained and exampled...hope the people in the back understood.
This is exactly how I always explain worker pay...once it's laid out like that people go..."ohhh"
its simple you put doors on cars he makes sure the business runs as a hole you have no voice.
@@Backdraft851unionizing gives you a voice
I believe Shawn is going to go get what we deserve even if it doesn’t meet all our demands…. I’m very confident this go round
WHO WOULDN’T WANT THEIR EMPLOYEES SHOWING UP HAPPY AND PROUD? That makes for better products and a better name for your company. I remember everyone wanted to work for the BIG3, today no one promotes their place of work because now there is no difference between them and McDonalds that’s why people quit! sad sad sad.
So very proud to finally have a union president that not only gets it but puts his actions to work for the members. Hands down proud of our union . And we are ready to fight this as long as it takes
Love it.we finally found A diamond in a rough and get polished this guy is phenomenal
Every UAW building and company training center should have a bronze statue of Shawn Fain in front of their building. Lets get it done.
Look at Shawn Fain man, so inspirational. ❤️🙌
It’s time for a change brothers and sisters 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Glad I gave him my vote 👍 #unionstrong #local685
Bro speaks facts. He is representing the U.A.W properly 🙌🏽 👏🏼 Thanks Shawn.
Local 862 member here. His address to absenteeism is SPOT ON. This conversation is had daily in the plants. You get what you pay for. *chef's kiss
862 LAP brother here.. I’m only worried because we don’t have a new product yet.. Escape and Lincoln SUVs are not selling well.. I feel like im working backwards here
Bravo!! The autoworkers deserve more!!
We back you Shawn Fain!!! We don't want to strike, but WE WILL!!! #Solidarity
Shout out to the interviewer he asked great questions. Sometimes factories can be a head down plow thru type of lifestyle. He gave me a great overview of wtf is going on.
Shawn was one of my closest friends growing up, in Kokomo. With that, I feel like I can speak for his character. He comes from a solid working-class family, was raised really well, and instilled with an exceptional work ethic. Beyond that, he is an honest, loyal person with a big heart and a great sense of humor. UAW members should feel fortunate to have someone like Shawn fighting for them because he actually believes in the cause. He isn't doing it for power, ego, or money.
Solidarity brothers and sisters! 862 Proud!
LAP 862 proud here!! Let’s strike brother! See you on the picket line!
Time for working people across this country to stand together
But trans people tho! /s
You're 100% right.
Working people need to stand together and not be divided by the "culture war" being cooked up by capitalist oligarchs.
Did you buy your microphone at 5 below
Auto contract proposal in the trash Theateractivitie? It WAS garbage Mr. Interviewer! We stand with you Fain 💪🤝
The Only Effective Answer To Organized Greed Is Organized Labor 💪
I was a Temp with GM and they charged me $125 union fees from my paycheck back in the 1990s but we had no UAW representation. A scam GM and UAW allowed for years! we were worked to death and if we were late ONCE we would be fired and the Temps would be let go before we could qualify for unemployment benefits. That is how they rolled then, I hope this guy fixes it now because it was abusive and both sides took advantage of people like me that just needed a job. Being hired as a Temp meant we had no benefits either but we paid the same fees as FT employees.
If you were paying union dues, you had representation. You must not have know what was going on.
@@rangerguy25 I guess I must be dumb and did not argue with the assembly line foreman and union reps at the now defunct North Tarrytown, NY GM plant 1989-1991 I built the Pontiac Transport and Chevy Lumina. No, YOU don't know what went on, I was there, it happened to me and they did not like me because I raised hell about that.
@@rconley40 First, the actual strike on that was in 2019 (look up UAW 2019 strike) and the point is that it was happening then and all the way to 2019, so I don't know what else to tell you, Shawn brought "abuses to Temp workers". I made you aware of the ones I witnessed and that it was happening from 1990 to 2019. So the fact that I was talking about 30 years ago to just 4 years ago should instead impress upon you how long these abuses were going on. Not to dismiss my story simply because it happened to me 30 years ago.
That’s weird. We never had “temps” at GM that early on. We were D2’s. Summer help. Usually May-September
❤ We love you president Shawn Fain you have the members best interest in mind and with fairness and pride and dignity united at the bargaining tables
Record Profits means Record Contracts.
Amen!
Not when it will make the automakers uncompetitive and end up in job losses
@@kaseyc5078 Wrong. None of us are buying that narrative. We want them to pay *themselves* less and *us* more, if you believe that fiction, you're a fool!!
@@kaseyc5078 how would they be uncompetitive when they've seen record profits for the past 4 years?
Labor costs account for 5-6 % of the cost of a new car. Your logic is flawed.
You are doing a great job as President!
It's about time the UAW had a real leader like Mr. Fain.
Stand tall and we will stand with you brother , local 551 Chicago ready to fight corruption greed we will fight like hell for cars we built but can not afford
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the members so ready to get back what’s there’s for a long time. Like I’ve seen contracts before and this right here just feels different and that’s bc we have a new president. He’s NOT GOING TO BRING US BACK A BAD CONTRACT.
The union is doing what they need to do. These corporations close plants and move the work to Mexaco or to where the labor is lowest.I retired in 95 and I haven't got a increase in retirement pay to date. I have lost 1/2 of my buying power.Workers in this country have taken a beating the last 20yrs. FAIN is right it's a race to the bottom. I'm proud of the U.A.W.

Don't be judging me and spouting off opinions you know nothing about in reply. You don't know my life story. #FightModernSlavery
if you vote for Trump, you support the Republican party and their goal of crushing unions and rolling back wages and benefits. Stop voting against yourself
I am not a Trump supporter. I do not support biden either. But, what unites us is workers' rights.
30 year UAW member at MOPAR Los Angeles and I agree this Union President is getting it done.

It's amazing how it's no coverage of this guy nationally... working class ppl take note of that.....manufactured consent is real...🌝😏

My president is preaching on absenteeism!!
Respect ,facts, and solidarity
Shawn Fain.
Don't forget how stellantis called uaw essential workers during covid pandemic only to incriminate us w attendance
We have the "good job" while our tax dollars take half our wages making our Actual compensation
Uncomparable to the profit.
Top pay has been the same over a decade, inflation is blatant
Gas,Truck payments, milk bread even
Who walks of the Lot paying only 70k a truck????
Trucks cost off the lot are. ... ..
This is probably the best president of the Uaw has had for years. It’s about time somebody stood up to the auto companies instead of laying in bed with them.
Thank you for mentioning our mental health as well as physical. These hours don’t allow you to have a healthy relationship with your family.
He is standing up for the tired worker.
Finally a president that gets it. KUDOS SHAWN FAIN
This is our time to strike. If not now then never, an economist said the employees of the big 3 likely won’t find a better time then this and that this is the contract to get what we deserve
Shawn Fain needs to run for President on a Worker's Party platform. This country and it's corporate owned government needs to be FIXED!
Yes wer on the assembly line making the rich richer while struggling and fighting for our famlies
@@RachelHarper-ik3og Agree 100%! It doesn't make any sense for 1000's of workers to struggle so 15 people can live like Kings. It's the same problem with every company in America as they keep pushing workers into a position of a race to the bottom. I also LOVE the idea of 32 hour work weeks!
Teamsters and UPS really helped the cause for raises!
17:30 Great comparison and PROOF! 👍👏
If Unions had the power they had from way back when, Workers would get a FAIR wage and would be able to ENJOY life.
They're all acting like these Workers should live to work. NO. They should be working to be able to live!
Competitiveness, as Shawn pointed out, is also a thinly veiled euphemism for race to the bottom.
Lol let Ford have those white collar worker go operate the fork lifts and make a call to OSHA. Love to see the fines for all the unlicensed operators.
I with you but in reality the company supplies the license's. Can easily certify them. But fork trucks operators is the last thing there worried about. Try replacing the 150k uaw members.
No increase in legacy pension in over 20 years. Absolutely ridiculous !!
Will he PLEASE. Run for POTUS!!! ❤
Why? I am not even going to ask you what makes you think knowing about the car industry prepares anyone to world leadership and I was a UAW member in Tarrytown NY (GM). I am in complete agreement with their struggle but instead of that you can support someone like Dr. West or Marianne Williamson, those are leaders currently running for President that agree with him. Keep in mind that the DNC will cheat and they will be painted as evil socialists but hopefully you can see past that scam.

Y'all are acting like UAW WANTS a strike no matter what. WRONG. If the Big 3 make concessions and simply offer them a FAIR contract, there's no reason to strike.
But no, instead of that, Stellantis has proposed an unbelievable unfair contract, with even more concessions, even less assurances,...
Strange how you don't point that out. Talking about throwing it in the bin and be outraged about that, but not be outraged about the CONTENT of that proposed contract.
You're enraged about the WRONG thing, Sir! 😤😤
Wtf!!!!!! Smh
Its sad the union voted that the membership can't make over $500 a week if they get a job while on strike
I don’t believe that’s right it’s been made clear we can work and collect the $500 a week for strike pay #Local1649
Most of the membership will likely be getting jobs to supplement the strike pay. We are gonna do what it takes to secure a better future for the sake of the working class!!

My neighbor works for Ford and said he could care less if they strike. All of his cars and homes are paid for.
Rooting for you guys!!!!!!
Exactly! Money they don't even need. Funny how that is never reported in the mainstream. The people at the top already have too much, but they still seem to get insane increases. How does that make any sense whatsoever!!????
Governments providing school children with food is governments admitting they know people aren't making a living wage.
Corporations save money and the cost of school food is still on the taxpayers.
To them it's a win / win + a positive marketing campaign for them.
Fain is the best UAW President. Thank you.
When no politicians will back workers in the class war, then the unions must.
What's gonna be done for the suppliers?
I my self work for a supplier of the big three. We are currently working 12 hour days 7days a week, people are exhausted, and all the higher management get to go home to their families, enjoy their weekends off… I have no choice but to work those hours,it is all based on seniority,so a lot of the newer people get no choice.. I myself can’t work 12 hrs 7 days a week… I ended up in the hospital for two days so to working those kind of hours…
The Big Three better realize they are not dealing with the old UAW Management style, now they have a President that states what the facts are and will represent his own UAW workers in a manner that is fair & equitable, he's the first President in a while that fights for his fellow workers.
With day supply real high on lots really a strike helps them. 22s/23s on lots just sitting.
Solidarity Forever!!!!!!!
Solidarity. is a lie. The worst suspects are the assembly team leaders, they are worse than management. Backstabbing their brothers and sisters. When get confronted, they’ll sing and wear “SOLIDARITY”
