Nice little video and it shows the variety of small radios available on the market and the effect they have had in making the big 3 produce similar radios at lower prices as well.personally, as a kid, i would have loved one of these easily affordable Walkie -Talkie type as we called them all those years ago. If this type of radio helps people get into Ham radio then all the better!
I am about three weeks into using a UV5R for the first time and my first foray into radio, I bought it to pick up marine channels at Eastham, but at home I have been listening to airport transmissions, its size, and price makes it a superb little unit, I am barely scratching the surface as to what it can do, its very clever and I am impressed with the battery life, I bought a Uniden Scanner but I cant get on with it, so am now selling that I think I used it for 5 mins. Am impressed with the Baofeng brand, recently bought a pair of BF888's, superb value for money and all easy to program using chirp.
With these small radios they are great if you are getting started in Amatuer radio, they may have poor front ends and be prone to being overloaded by strong signals. But they are fun to use and if they get dropped and broken you've not lost anything!
I agree totally mate. Like when I do contests or go on a hill calling CQ, I don't use chinese cheap radios for that reason. They're great however for every day comms, repeater work etc
Interesting video. Given the size and price (wow, they used to be expensive) of radios from say the 1980's/early 1990's, these radios tick all the boxes, both for price and features. It's great that we have these feature rich, inexpensive radios available to us now. Cheers! ;-)
I've had a pair of T1s for just over a week now. Did some urban range tests with them last Saturday and it wasn't great, but then UHF isn't good in this environment anyway, particularly with undulating ground thrown in the mix. I managed to get about 1km. Still like them though, nice and small, convenient to have in the pocket. Will be testing them out on the hills soon so keep an eye out for the video I'll produce on my channel. Btw I'll be out in the peak district tomorrow with an 817 and ZL special beam for the 70CM AFS contest. Should be able to get pretty far from where I plan on setting up. I've always loved small radios - there's just so much more incentive to take it with you when you can slip it in a pocket so easily. My current favourite is the Hytera PD365 DMR/analogue radio. It's obviously a bit more pricey than some but it's about the same size as the WLN and works superbly, especially given the tiny aerial. It's also astonishingly loud for such a small radio :) 73 de G0TVJ.
One big downside to these tiny radios is that most are single band (uhf only). This helps keep the size down but every amateur is always itching for more! So in my opinion the 3r and 3r+ are the winners here overall. Removable antenna is very handy!
Jake Mottram I just ordered a UV-3R Mark II. The UV-3R Plus if nice, because it has the same programming/audio port as a lot of HTS, but the Mark II has an SMA-female connector on the radio like most HTs
Yes and yes, but I find the receive poor on most hills. I have owned a UV5R, UVB5 and still own a GT3-TP MKIII. The B5 had the best receiver and the GT has the best TX and RX audio (and 8 watts output). It's been replaced by a Yaesu FT-70DE, so I'll be getting rid of it soon. I think a friend is interested. He has my old UV5R which was my first radio in 2012.
Which would you recommend for a beginner? I just need one for when my wife and I ride our Onewheels. I'm looking for something small, lightweight, and has a clear signal. I probably wouldn't need much more range than a mile. Basically just something super easy to use.
I guess you don't have 220 amateur in the UK, but that's becoming very popular in NE US. The newer Baofeng tribanders, 2, 220, 440 are very decent radios, good stock antenna, not quite the sensitivity of the "big three," but they're getting there.
If you were in a tunnel, does the radio talk to radio or does it have to go via a transmitter ? So basically in a tunnel could you talk to the other person ?

That's why we use repeaters to transmit over or around obstacles. Concrete and metal structures are terrible for radios on UHF. They're not great on VHF either but worse the higher the frequency. This is why Wifi (2400mhz) doesn't go far in a building. We need to do a collab where we talk about radio!
I wonder how the new Boafeng BF-T1 compares to the popular Motorola TLKR series in terms of range? The Motorolas are limited to 0.5 watts and 8 PMR channels whereas the Boafeng can be programmed with all 16 PMR channels and sports 1W (2W?) power output which should give it a significant range advantage
As a follow up what is in your opinion the best overall "holiday two way radio"? By that I mean a small, thin radio that can be carried around on the shoulder strap all day with sufficient range for a market or shopping center. The UV-5R is already too massive for that (especially weight and thickness) We've tried the Motorola TKLR 50/60 with mixed results, they're limited to 0.5 watts and you cannot reprogram them with the new 8 PMR channels or any other channels (like FRS channels for US holiday)
You answered your own question :) The Baofeng would perform better. But, range is dependant on everything other than the radio and power. Terrain, conditions, antenna, height, frequency are all bigger factors. Radio and power are bottom of the list.
Is it just me, or is the Baofeng T1's antenna identical to the WLN/RT22? Which makes me wonder: who actually MAKES and designs these things? Why does the Retevis UV-5R look EXACTLY like a Baofeng with Retevis stickers, but the TYT UV-3R only looks inspired by the Baofeng? Strange market. I wish I had the inside scoop.

I wonder if there's one or several companies that make the various HT parts which are then packaged by Baofeng, et al., or if Baofeng just licenses their tech out to others. Great video! Especially since I am in the market for a small one for my youngest. Radios like the UV5R and UV5R are great, but too complicated for a 7 year old. The Sainsonic looks good, but doesn't look as sturdy and kid proof as the WLN. I will definitely be picking up a couple of the WLN's for spare parts and extra batteries. I plan on programming all 16 channels to my local GMRS Repeater so even if she accidentally changed the channel she'll still be able to reach me. I personally own a UV5Rv2Plus, mine isn't as compact though with the extended battery, but that's a nice bonus. I might look into a UV3RPlus for myself. Thanks for the review as always. I would like to actually see a review of those micro radios, I ha e been curious, but apprehensive.
I actually own a UV5R which for a long time was my day to day until I replaced it with the GT3WP. But the UV5R still holds a place in my heart, and I keep it on my night stand now 😊
The WLN is definitely one for the kids, simple to use, rugged and tiny and a little bit more fashionable for a radio. Which ones would you like to see a review on, I'll add it to the list :)
The Leixen vv-108 is definitely the micro to see. I've been curious about them for a while, at how well they work. I am also interested in the Zastone Mini9, it's a mini that has the hidden display that the A18 had but about half the size. It's not a micro size though and I wouldn't ask you to review it because it can't be much different than the A18

Hey man, I live in the center of a medium size city. Around me, there are mostly 3-7 storey blocks, schools, office buildings with some higher ones in between and the terrain is mostly flat. I am looking for a somewhat compact set of radios with stable range of 1 to 1.5km within the city. Does such a beast exist for reasonable amount of money? Btw, I really loved how small and functional the Baofeng T1 is, so I actually ordered a set, after watching your videos. I'm still trying to figure out, where I'll actually use them when they arrive. lol =]
The environment you describe is a tough one for any handheld radio really. The Baofeng T1 would be worth a go but it'll perform no worse or no less than any handheld out there.
How does the Sainsonic RST567 compare to the WLN KD-C1? (aka "Retevis RT22") Not wanna stalk you on youtube (I also posted in the sainsonic unboxing&review video...) but you're the only guy offering useful information out there. I want to supply our local mountainbike group with some small walkie talkies that have sufficient range and just ordered a set of WLN KD-C1 together with Nokia BL-5C batteries for testing. The Boafeng T1 is also interessting but the biggest downside is the "fixed" battery IMO, what the hell were they thinking? Is the Boafeng UV-3R / 3R+ still a good buy even though it's "old" and Boafeng stopped production? (I honestly dont care about the price difference) I love the short intro and outro music btw
Hey Roman, The WLN is 16 channel, the sansonic is 99 (I think), both are pretty similar to be honest. Out of all radios, the UV-3R is the best all round but the WLN KD-C1 is a brilliant radio and you'll enjoy it. The T1 is nice but a bit of a novelty. Cheers for the kind words
i have a T1, Retevis RT22, BF888s, UV82, UV5r and Motorola 92 H2o. For me it is the best and most practical RT22. Good for the pocket. Antenna can not be broken as with uv82, uv5r ... Good sound, easy to handle and looks pretty well done. Better and more robust than the most popular BF888s. These are the same devices in a different package. But for me it's better package - RT22 (WLN KD-C1).

Hello, I have just bought a pair of Baofeng BF-T1. Where do get the official software for Windows 10, Mac and Linux? Have I the got official Baofeng programming cable with official software disk I could understand as it was in Chinese? Where do get the official software if it only for windows I do like WinZip files I much prefer. Exe ? note thos the black and what without digital display are security radios amd mostly requires you to obtain a spectrum license to use them.. however in a hamradio context they would be a grey area of use the perma mounts are shot range and are useless to use in thos context.. I believe the bofeng of similare design i most likely a uhf cb by design range is about 100-150 meters..
Jason you're wrong on all counts there mate. The black and white ones are UHF radios which range from around 400-470mhz. They can be used on the amateur bands as can all of the radios in this video. They can be used as security radios with the right license and frequency allocation as can all radios in the video. The perma mount antenna radios can work just as well as the other radios depending on conditions, terrain, power and frequency. I've had fantastic long range results on those radios with short antennas infact the ones in this video get me into a repeater 75 miles away from my local radio spot. UHF CB is UHF public band, there isn't a specified type for these channels, if you've got a radio that does 100-150 meters, bin it. It's useless and most likely a toy.

The radios like UV-3R, UV-5R and all these families are one of the worst chinese radios on the market in terms of in-band and out-band sigs breakthrough and desensing and blocking the receiver input by strong signals when large antennas connected or when radios are on high altitude location used. It is well known. So i am surprised and handshaking my hands when I see like you are saying "chinese radios are smaller and smaller without compromising quality..." that is all. Many people purchased these radios according "excellent" reviews and then has been totaly dissapointed and radio went to trash...

No, a tunnel will cut off pretty much all communication, but you could talk to someone in the same tunnel if they also had an HT

Definitely the Baofeng :) The TALKR's are great but they're limiting like you say, power and channels.
How about the Zastone Mini9 ? It looks amazing and even got a really cool display, I'm amazed you haven't reviewed that yet!?

Hello, I have just bought a pair of Baofeng BF-T1. Where do get the official software for Windows 10, Mac and Linux? Have I the got official Baofeng programming cable with official software disk I could understand as it was in Chinese? Where do get the official software if it only for windows I do like WinZip files I much prefer. Exe ? note thos the black and what without digital display are security radios amd mostly requires you to obtain a spectrum license to use them..
however in a hamradio context they would be a grey area of use
the perma mounts are shot range and are useless to use in thos context..
I believe the bofeng of similare design i most likely a uhf cb by design range is about 100-150 meters..
Jason you're wrong on all counts there mate.
The black and white ones are UHF radios which range from around 400-470mhz. They can be used on the amateur bands as can all of the radios in this video. They can be used as security radios with the right license and frequency allocation as can all radios in the video.
The perma mount antenna radios can work just as well as the other radios depending on conditions, terrain, power and frequency. I've had fantastic long range results on those radios with short antennas infact the ones in this video get me into a repeater 75 miles away from my local radio spot.
UHF CB is UHF public band, there isn't a specified type for these channels, if you've got a radio that does 100-150 meters, bin it. It's useless and most likely a toy.

The radios like UV-3R, UV-5R and all these families are one of the worst chinese radios on the market in terms of in-band and out-band sigs breakthrough and desensing and blocking the receiver input by strong signals when large antennas connected or when radios are on high altitude location used. It is well known. So i am surprised and handshaking my hands when I see like you are saying "chinese radios are smaller and smaller without compromising quality..." that is all. Many people purchased these radios according "excellent" reviews and then has been totaly dissapointed and radio went to trash...
To be fair, he did say after that, that they are not the best radios on the market.
