  • Don't try this at home my ass. I saw this on Brainiac and had to try it.
    I'm not responsible for the damage you may do to your microwave if you try it at home, though.

    The reason why this happens is because the flame is actually a plasma. And if you don't already know, plasma is electrically conductive. So it's basically like sticking tinfoil (which is conductive) in the microwave.
    The RF (radio frequency) in the microwave is picked up by the conductive object, which acts sort of like an antenna, and it actually generates an electric current. Having nowhere to go, the voltage is very high - it will arc to wherever, but typically it will arc from the sharpest edges.
