DEI Reflect-A-Gold Foil Test

The tube is just lying inside the PVC, and the PVC has a slot cut out of the bottom.
Cheap Chinese Multimeter gets 20kV+

It "held" 15000 volts through the included cheap leads, but the meter stopped reading correctly after that. Obviously, don't try to ...

    Should have angled the plates so it didn't reflect the heat rite back at the hot plate. Seems that would make that side hotter. maybe? Also when you wrap a tube it reflects the heat in all diffrent directions due to the nature of the tube. May work better on a curved surface.

    In my opinion the 2 test pieces should be an enclosed or semi enclosed with the temp readings from inside. Maybe use a couple tubes long enough so that the open ends are not affected by the heat source. This will simulate the true purpose of the heat wrap. It’s not like you are only covering the part of t your intake that faces your headers. With all that said I’m really glad someone decided to test this product to see if it actually work and not just using it because you see your friends with it. Thanks.

    I had simular results when I tested two different heat shielding products vs raw aluminum. Testing was done with both a space heater and an oven eye, the shielded products heated up MUCH more than raw aluminum strips. That said, the myaudis4.com guy did a test with air flowing through a pipe, and saw a significant heat reduction using shielding products.

      Try it again but with the gold side not over the heater but to the other side. Gold absorbs heat and dissipates it faster its not really reflecting it. The benefit of having gold wrapped ic or piping is that the hoses have higher temperature due to turbo increasing it, so it dissipates heat into engine bay air whitch is cooler.

    Thanks for putting the work in it is nice that people try these things. Like below I did notice that a much larger percentage of the DEI plate was over the hot plate. I would expect more heat to be introduced to the material. If you are still doing experiments maybe try to get them a little more even. Thanks!

    Smaller plate different controls failure experiment

  • @Real_Tim_S
    @Real_Tim_S 7 лет назад

    Interesting, but a couple problems I see with your experimental setup - hear me out, this isn't an attack, merely observations: 1) The aluminum samples are not the same size (different thermal mass = different temperature increases of the same power over the same time). 2) The gold-film covered sample is over the top of the heat-plate more than the larger uncovered sample (more thermal energy input = more temperature rise in the same time, even if the samples were the same size) 3) The clamp load on the samples by the stand affects how much of a heat sink the stand is, you need to use thermal insulators to hold the sample. 4) The heat-plate is designed for heating via conduction, not radiation - use an quartz IR heat source, or a bathroom heat bulb instead. 5) You have placed the samples over the convection air column (heat rises), meaning, you are contaminating the experiments purpose with another heat transfer mode. The samples should be placed vertically facing the radiation heat source, out of any and all air flows. 6) Just because paint is black does not make it a good radiator of heat - some darker commercial paints are being produced with IR reflective properties, which reduce head gain under sun-load. Use a refractory heat emissive paint which is specifically designed to radiate heat from the painted sample. 7) Your "control" temperature sensor, is also not set up to absorb IR heat - it should be painted black, like with a flat heat emissive paint. 8) Another rule of thumb, flat-painted or rough surfaces is better than glossy-painted or smooth for use with IR sensors. 9) Really you should measure the temperature of your samples with a conductive measurement - otherwise you are adding another radiation step into the experiment. In the lab I worked in, we ALWAYS used a calibrated thermocouple to obtain accurate material temperatures. If you then use an IR imager to look at the sample, you will see the temperature reading at the thermocouple, and can correct any errors generated by the IR imager. What you should probably do is place two samples of exactly the same size in the middle of a 1-foot-long tubular mineral fiber holder, those samples should be placed vertically behind a cutout which allows a known-size exposure to the IR source (like 4 square inches, 2"x2") with no IR allowed to pass to and "illuminate" the mineral fiber support structure. The tube will prevent convection from distorting the surface temperatures. You would also need to demonstrate that you have "calibrated" your test setup by placing a reference measurement element in each position (like a black painted temperature sensor). If your setup is good, from a given starting temperature and fixed ambient temperature, the rate of rise and ultimate steady-state temperature should be the same for the calibration sensor in both positions. Finally, having a control sample for each type where no radiated heat is applied to the samples, will help you measure the actual differences. Short of going through all of that hassle, this doesn't appear to be what I'd call "good data" on how the gold film performs when applied to aluminum with respect to radiated heat.

      Question is the intake tube is getting conductive heat from the throttle body or turbo by which it is connected. So would this show that it is better to keep the pipe unwrapped to bleed off heat, or worse because heat that is bled off and not retained must be ending up elsewhere like the air in and out of the Intake.

    The reason why this happens is because the flame is actually a plasma. And if you don't already know, plasma is electrically conductive. So it's basically like sticking tinfoil (which is conductive) in the microwave. The RF (radio frequency) in the microwave is picked up by the conductive object, which acts sort of like an antenna, and it actually generates an electric current. Having nowhere to go, the voltage is very high - it will arc to wherever, but typically it will arc from the sharpest edges.

    I know this video's a year old by now, but what you really ought to do next time is get a noise level meter in there when you fire it. Might be fun to see. Because, to be honest, it doesn't sound like a very large rifle when I hear it, and I don't know if that's the camera you've got that's cutting the sound off or whether it's actually not quite that loud.
