I like how he bottoms out the puller on it's last thread and it pops the yoke right out and he doesn't even crack a beer in celebration, like it's no big deal.. lucky
Thank you very much for a great step by step video of rebuilding an AWD front diff, mine is 4WD and added an extra step on the passenger side of the housing, $100 master install kit and $30 of tools saved me hundreds by doing it myself.
I came here to get a look at the clip that holds the stub shaft in place, since mine is not very cooperative. Didn't see that, but it is nice to see you split the case anyway. Thanks for uploading, now I'm on to part 2.
Bad ass dude, looks like you’ve done this before. I’m taking my truck to diff shop this week. Let the pros rebuild my front diff. Thanks for informative video.
This was a great help in repairing the leaking seals on my 99 GMC Sierra. As I only use 4WD in snow, the pinion was bearing was fine and I didn't touch it. I only had issues with trying to drive on the new side bearings using a hammer. I got one side on and wound up damaging the new bearing when trying to drive on the opposite side. There are some videos online showing a torch method, but I was fortunate enough to borrow time on a hydraulic press to finally put them on. In hindsight, anyone with a hydraulic press can put them on in 10 minutes. Save yourself the headache even if you have to pay a few dollars. Great video. Thanks!
I did this job on my 2001 Silverado and I used a long 3/8 ext and an air chisel to knock it out it was really stuck nothing else was moving it at all,it took about 5 hits to get it out on the passenger side bearing.
The AWD Denali and Escalade are very hard on the carrier bearings, 100k and rebuild. I've done mine twice now. The last time I didn't even remove the pinion. Pressed two new bearings on the carrier, set the back lash and it was quite as a mouse. If there is a next I will change out to a part time T case and part time extension housing on the front diff.
Awesome! Now I know what to expect on a rebuild. First I have to replace both axle seals on that front diff of my 2008 Silverado. Thank you again for the video.
How did you make out? My ‘03 is really whining. I just put in new 75/90 after 139,000 miles hoping that was the cure but it didn’t quiet it down. Lots of metal shavings on the magnetic fill plug.
Nice video! Beat the Tar out of that pinion ha ha. I liked the video think I will do mine as my mileage is 163,xxx. Seals are leaking anyways so why not go knee deep into it. The only thing is I wish you would say which size sockets your using when removing each piece. It will help for a tear down list for us. Thanks again for the video!
carrier brgs on the gm ifs front diff are the week link, I will be doing rebuild # 2 on my Denali in the next week. if the front housing was steel instead of alum, they would last twice as long.
Great video! This helps me a lot. You leave off this video discussing backlash and showing what you refer to in the next video as needle bearings. I replaced the seals in my 92 GMC pickup and these needle bearings started falling out as soon as I removed the output shaft. Any idea what would cause that? Is there a way to replace those bearings without rebuilding the whole unit?
Great video!!! Need to rebuild my 8.25 w/304k miles on it. Any recommendations on good shops in North NJ? Would love to do the job myself but schedule may not permit. I always worry about finding reputable / quality mechanics that DON'T cut corners!!
Thank you so much for your response Broncocarl92 i really appreciate it. .and i am so sorry to bother you with another Question..when installing the crush sleeve how much force do you use to crush it down..i watched your video but i am not quiet sure of how you did that..so sorry to bother you, but browsed so many other related videos but none was nearly as informative as yours..Thank you so much..Broncocarl92..
Hi Mr BroncoCarl92..first of all thank you so much for your so helpful videos..i would like to ask you a question sir..your response will be so appreciated..and thank you in advance...i have a 2005 chevy silverado which is making a really bad sound that think it's coming from the front differential, which happens to be leaking the gear fluid..¿what will happen if i continue to run my truck like this? I already added some more gear fluid but the noise keeps getting louder. .thank you so much again for all the great useful help you provide to us. Keep up the great work. .
The front differential could lock up and stop the vehicle suddenly (extreme case). The noise is likely failing bearings which would damage the other components and make the unit unrepairable. Thanks for watching.
Carl outstanding work, I’m on my 3td front 2004 Tahoe diff from a junk yard and without you I’d be getting a 4th junk replacement, I’m going to rebuild the one I have sitting in the garage thanks to you. I think I can figure out the race removal, I’m assuming the adjusters get removed and reset in the original positions. The question I have is where did you get that random piece of metal you so casually tossed on top of the Ring gear/spider gear assembly to support the center screw of the puller to remove the bearings from the assembly. Is it a piece from a Bushing Drive Set? Thanks for all you do I’ve become a big fan of all your videos, I might even try the transfer rebuild on my 1994 2500 4wd Dodge ram!!
I'm thinking on rebuilding my front differential but I Don't have all the spreacial tools that you have I'm just wondering would it be more cost efficient to just get a used one from the junk yard or to rebuild mine considering I would have to buy all these special tools
We have a 2000 GMC Yukon XL. There is this pretty loud whining noise coming from the frontal area of the vehicle. It almost sounds like a real big electric motor malfunctioning. I know there is not one in there... Somewhere near the transmission and transfer case. Do you have any ideas to what it might be? Low fluid level, parts grinding together, etc?
I have an 05 Tahoe that I'm trying to get the drivers side "axle mount" out of, and it won't budge. Do you have any "tricks" to get it loose? I know it has a round "clip" that goes in a groove around the axle, but if I can't get the shaft out, how do I get to it?
the thing you have the differential bolt it up to that mounted to your workbench what is the name of that or where can I find one because that is f****** awesome!
Your talents, ability's and tool selection continue to impress me every vid! Have you done any schooling in the past, or just all hands on learning? Keep up the great info vids!
nice video, quick i have 2008 Escalade AWD just develop a noise front end while driving random noise i thought i had broken engine mount fixed but steel loud metal to metal noise bothering me lot nothing loose underneath....what you think tranfer case or front differential
+mannysedan limo My 2007 Yukon had noises that came from the front wheel bearing units, first the left side then the right side two-three weeks later. Noises are tough to diagnose with hearing them though. good luck and thanks for watching and the comments.
+mannysedan limo Like I mentioned before without hearing it diagnosis is a tough one. When my bearings started to go it wasn't like the normal bearing noise you would get (growling), sounded like breaking glass or metal scraping on/off. Good luck.
I have a 2002 escalade ESV and mine started making a loud thunking noise at low speeds and under load. turned out to be the ring and pinion gears slipping/skipping.
Hey Broncocarl92 I have a question about a 4wd issue I am having. I have a 2002 Avalanche and I have no 4wd. I have both actuators in transfer case and front diff working but still have no 4wd. I know the t-case is working as it will lock the driveshaft when 4wd is engaged with front diff actuator unplugged. I removed my actuator out of my 2000 Suburban which I know the 4wd works on and installed it in the Avalanche and still have no 4wd. At this point I believe it to be a mechanical problem in the front diff. I have never pulled one of these apart so I am not familiar with the system. Do I have a problem with the slide collar? Maybe a broken shift fork? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
my 05 1500 has 160k miles and probably original fluid. I have noticed there's a little fluid around where the cv shafts output. I do use autotrac when wet, and theres a light gear and grind noise I noticed when replacing the driver side hub recently. when driving down the road and letting off the gas theres a howl drone from the front, hoping it's just low fluid. I do have another problem, and a question. I have a hard shifting clunk, and also when letting off the gas then back on it clunks. in 4wd it doesn't do it. could it be the ring and pinion in the rear diff going? if it happens to be so, I would like to switch the gears from the 3.73s to 4.10 gears. do I need to change the front if I go that route?
Hey Carl, great video. I have a 2005 Sierra Denali 1500 6.0L . Just got the truck and did all the fluids. There was minimal shavings on all magnets from the diffs to the transmission. I used all the correct fluids. I'm hearing a drone noise or low howling coming directly from the front diff between 60-95 Klm (metric) noise is only heard when load is applied(gas applied) then stops when you let off. Truck has 220xxx KLM. Should I just ignore the noise and keep driving? Or get her apart and fix immediately ? I think it's the pinion bearing personally. I do a lot of towing with it. Remember also this is a AWD. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance
+iron1man7818 yes, that was the first thing I checked. All good. I ended up getting the front diff rebuilt. It's less noisy. But I can still hear something when it's under a load. Maybe it's just a GM thing.
I have a 2018 Tahoe. The driver side stub axle has a bit of wobble and play to it. More then half of what I’ve found online says it’s normal. Even my local transmission repair shop said it’s normal when I called to inquire. It doesn’t feel normal. I saw someone say the “nut” that holds the bearing on the driver side can be adjusted once the tab is removed. Is this what you would recommend? Along with replacing the beedle bearing and seal? I hope this makes it to you. If there’s an expert in front diffs. It’s you. Thank you.
TBH not sure what nut "they" are talking about. The spanner nuts on the bearing cones are for preload and setting distance from ring gear to pinion. The setting would only "change" if bearing is going away.
This is an older Tahoe but I’m having the same issue on mines. At the 1 minute mark you can see the wobble. Is it really normal? It can’t be right ? I think I might just get a rebuilt diff and swap it out instead of messing around with it given my current skill set. ruclips.net/video/dDZ5YReeiCA/видео.htmlsi=aRdmXKSw7qKWNYl9
I have that same truck man I have a question about the 4x4? It's on the floor just like yours is but I shift it to 4x4 hi and the back has power and the front drive shaft is spinning but no front wheel power would you know anything about this long shot in the dark but thought I'd ask?thanks for you time if you know what I can do or check already checked fuse also 4x4 motor on the axle checked it has power and extends I dont know what else to do to get it to lock the front wheels?
Where did you get that bearing kit? Im looking for a kit that has everything like what the one you used. I keep finding kits with bearings an some seals... I haven't found a complete one like yours.
I have a 2004 Tahoe with Auto Trak 4wd, has about 138k miles on it and changed the fluid last night and the plug looked like yours, nasty build up and metallic fluid. Im hoping its just carrier bearings. The video uses the same front differential correct?
Would you think this would be a fairly similar process on a 2014 model? I’ve got the housing out and am tackling the job tomorrow and from what I can tell the assembly looks exactly the same
You are a mechanical fucking genius, Carl. The way you made this diff' your bitch just looked spectacular. Not to mention, you can pull any required tool right out of your ass, wether to be used as designed or wonderfully improvised. The dent puller for removing the outer axle seal, legit. I have never seen anybody pull a pair a set of stub shafts like that. Some people spend an hour attempting to remove a GM stub shaft and still break it off. I will have to see if it's possible to get a pry bar behind that driver stub flange while it's still in the vehicle. Really enjoy watching you work. Definitely made me a better mechanic

@@reefym2627 I hit it pretty hard. I didn't want to brake it. I even rigged up a slide hammer that I modified to go all the way out past where the hub bearing is. Still no luck.
Hi, I have a 2001 Yukon Denali AWD and I was told my front diff is sealed and cant be rebuilt and I am not sure if the mechanic was telling the truth or trying to make a sale. Does that sound correct to you? How can I tell?
The axle seal on the long side is leaking on my silverado. can the seal change be done with the diff in the truck or will i have to remove the entire assembly? Thanks
Is the same for a 06 duramax? I cant seem to get the shaft out of the diff on driver side to change axle seal. So i would assume i have to take it apart to hit it out.? Thanks.
The only thing i have not tried is a slide hammer. I dont have access to one anywhere near by. My only other option is to take the diff apart and hit it from the inside correct? By the way thanks for the fast reply!
700trippleg I think disassembling the unit to remove the axle is a bit extreme. you don't have a long pry bar? they should just pop out. you could try putting some pressure outward on it while striking the center of the shaft flange. I hope that helps.
I like how he bottoms out the puller on it's last thread and it pops the yoke right out and he doesn't even crack a beer in celebration, like it's no big deal.. lucky
Wow , I just smacked mine out with a hammer lmao
Thank you very much for a great step by step video of rebuilding an AWD front diff, mine is 4WD and added an extra step on the passenger side of the housing, $100 master install kit and $30 of tools saved me hundreds by doing it myself.

Hah, great video though, thanks a bunch! Also enjoyed the dent puller trick on the seal. Gotta try that.

Thanks for positing. I've got this coming in the very near future and this has been of great help. Thanks again.
Super job! Thanks man and love the "No Dice" with the pinion trouble!
Awesome! Now I know what to expect on a rebuild. First I have to replace both axle seals on that front diff of my 2008 Silverado. Thank you again for the video.
Wish all the gm diffs I did had a short side stub come out that easy! Another great vid
What do if they don’t come out that easy ?
Excellent !!! Thank you...owe you a cold beer!!

What part number is the Kukko puller? I have a front differential to rebuild out of a 2007 Denali. Very nice video
I rebuilt one out of an 04 Yukon awd. same thing. both bearings shot. 80,000 miles on this one though

That old race looked spalled really bad. I wouldn't reuse it. You
're into it that far, think I'd replace all the bearings & races.
Jana Davila I didn't reuse any of the races in this build. Races that have any galling are trash. Did you watch part 2?

Amazing video, I think I may need to do this to my front differential
Watchin' and learnin', thanks Carl.
Thanks for your video. I recently replaced the actuator motor and had oil coming out of the hole. Is that supposed to happen??

My 03 Silverado did that after I changed the tranny I had lost a little fluid in my transfer case. Filled it anf that noise stopped. Hope it helps
BroncoCarl, 276K miles, wow, almost broken in.
Just did mine 04 Denali, the left bearing had turned to dust. Had a silver mine inside
I know now what I must do....Thanks for sharing!
thanks for sharing this vidio it helped me alot im doing a front dif on a 1997 s10 blazer very good job on the vidio Broncocarl

yeah those adjusters go right back in the same exact spot with different (new) bearings. thats why they have adjusters
How much would it cost to do a job like that. Thanks it is very informative it is great that u do this for the public
around 1200 1500 through a shop.

the thing you have the differential bolt it up to that mounted to your workbench what is the name of that or where can I find one because that is f****** awesome!
It's usually just called a differential holding fixture or sometimes a transmission holding fixture. Some work for both, some are part specific.

Interesting stuff
A questions... How reinstalled the pinion?
what happened to mac? seems like all there trucks dried up around here too
Good info

Thank you for responding. What they call a nut. Is what encases the needle bearing that the stub shaft goes through on the driver side.
This is an older Tahoe but I’m having the same issue on mines. At the 1 minute mark you can see the wobble. Is it really normal? It can’t be right ? I think I might just get a rebuilt diff and swap it out instead of messing around with it given my current skill set.

Hey I ended up figuring it out my shim on the inside came out and was blocking the axle from engaging
Btw, what type of puller did you use to remove the driveshaft yoke? He never seen one that you can tighten the clamps.
That is a tool make by KUKKO, a German tool company.
Thanks for watching!
I'll check it out! Thanks!
Broncocarl92, what part number is your puller? I see a few different ones. Pricey, but it looks like it is well worth it.
Thanks Richie
hi i got a qustion for the ifs do you know if you can replace the front diff with an e locker??
Where did you get that bearing kit? Im looking for a kit that has everything like what the one you used. I keep finding kits with bearings an some seals... I haven't found a complete one like yours.

I have a 2004 Tahoe with Auto Trak 4wd, has about 138k miles on it and changed the fluid last night and the plug looked like yours, nasty build up and metallic fluid. Im hoping its just carrier bearings. The video uses the same front differential correct?
meen95z I believe so. This is a full time unit, part time units are similar with a few more parts, axle disconnect system. Repair is same for both.
Would you think this would be a fairly similar process on a 2014 model? I’ve got the housing out and am tackling the job tomorrow and from what I can tell the assembly looks exactly the same

Did you figure it out ?
@@reefym2627 no luck, seems to be stuck for some reason.
@@erict8267 did you hit it hard enough ?
@@reefym2627 I hit it pretty hard. I didn't want to brake it. I even rigged up a slide hammer that I modified to go all the way out past where the hub bearing is. Still no luck.
My brother used a three hole steering wheel puller with correct size long bolts to pull the flange off.
will a 02 2500 front diff bolt up to a 97 tahoe.
Hi, I have a 2001 Yukon Denali AWD and I was told my front diff is sealed and cant be rebuilt and I am not sure if the mechanic was telling the truth or trying to make a sale. Does that sound correct to you? How can I tell?
He probably is only a parts changer. Not everyone rebuilds parts anymore.
I was banging on my oil pan and it cracked. I was doing my dif for 05 trailblazer and the case broke too 🥲
would this basically be same on 99 k1500 (classic body style)
Yes should be the same
@@Broncocarl92 Exactly what I wanted to know! Great vid Thx!
The axle seal on the long side is leaking on my silverado. can the seal change be done with the diff in the truck or will i have to remove the entire assembly? Thanks
***** Should be able to do on the vehicle.
I'm looking for part II
so what would i need to replace if the short side has play? just the shaft or does it need tb rebuilt?
I’m in this same situation currently. Any luck ?
What do you call that bench mount? i really need one of those
Yeah, where does someone get a bench mount like this??
+Chris Ambler It's from Snap On. I don't know if they sell them anymore.
Does anybody know what that bench mount is called?
Make one...two pieces of pipe, and a couple of pieces of bar stock.
It's called a "holding fixture". OTC Tools makes one for around $300 USD. Search "differential holding fixture" & it will pop right up.
good job ,what is backlash?
the clearance between the ring and pinion gears..
Nice
Thanks
Great video. Would these procedures be basically the same for 4WD w/actuator? Can you hammer out the right shaft if benched?
There exactly the same except for the left side with the actuator just a couple extra pieces
Is the same for a 06 duramax? I cant seem to get the shaft out of the diff on driver side to change axle seal. So i would assume i have to take it apart to hit it out.? Thanks.
700trippleg should be the same sometimes the axles a little stubborn
The only thing i have not tried is a slide hammer. I dont have access to one anywhere near by. My only other option is to take the diff apart and hit it from the inside correct? By the way thanks for the fast reply!
700trippleg I think disassembling the unit to remove the axle is a bit extreme. you don't have a long pry bar? they should just pop out. you could try putting some pressure outward on it while striking the center of the shaft flange. I hope that helps.
I'm sure that smell great
Do the 3/4 ton trucks also use the same diff or is it a larger unit?
The 3/4 ton has larger 9.25 however procedure would be similar.
I can smell it from here.
how much will you rebuild mines ? i’ll ship it to you.
Hello everyone, what type of fluid I need for my dif.
Do you have a parts list or a link to a rebuild kit?
Randy's Ring and Pinion
Would the procedure be about the same on a 9.25 diff?
dirtyski 111 yes
Would this be the same design as one in a 96 k1500 suburban?
Dan Paterson believe so
if i pulled this off of my suburban can i put a locker in instead of the normal gears?
adam smith if you could find a locking diff sure why not
ok thanks for the help
I need to know how the adjuster works
go to mechanic school
i bet that puller wasnt cheap
As My Mexican friend would say C clip?
I love mechanical stuff
i need this guy to do mine so bad 96 taheo
👍 👍
Do you do this for a living?
