  • I don’t care what you have planned for your next leg workout, but you better make room for what I’m going to show you in this important leg training video. Here, I’m going to reveal to you the number one thing you need to do every single time you workout your legs. Some may have given you alternative advice, and I’m going to tell you that what you have been given is just bad advice.
    60% off all AX programs - athleanx.com/x/...

    For instance, if you were told that all you ever need to do is squat, you have been given bad training advice. Likely, the person telling you this has never trained an athlete and doesn’t understand that the extent of leg training encompasses more than just the quads and hamstrings. The muscles of the hips are some of the most underutilized and undertrained areas on the body and can only be targeted with multiplanar movements and exercises.
    The squat is a bilateral, sagittal plane movement. If all you ever do is squat then you are not training your legs and hips in the transverse and frontal planes. Basically, you are avoiding two of the three dimensions in space. Not good if you ever plan to call yourself an elite level athlete. Here I show you why incorporating single leg training is not an option but a requirement of a complete leg training plan.
    Now, am I bashing on the squat? Not at all. The squat is the single most important leg and hip movement that you can do and should form the basis or foundation of your leg workouts. That said, as I pointed out, this is a sagittal plane exercise that has some shortcomings that need to be addressed with additional single leg exercises.
    One of the key benefits to single leg exercises like the Bulgarian Split Squats and multi-directional lunges are that they not only train you to be strong on each leg individually but they help to reveal strength imbalances between sides. Intervening early when a strength imbalance is detected is one of the fastest ways to fix the problem and the best way to prevent this from resulting in a lower body injury that keeps you away from the gym for too long.
    You will see that no matter which athlete I train, at some point in a given leg workout we are going to be doing single leg exercises and training. It can either be explosive or controlled. The bottom line is, not an athlete gets out of the gym without first completing at least one of these leg exercise options in their leg workout. Here I showcase Pittsburgh Steeler wider receiver Antonio Brown and the single leg movements that he performs to be the best at his position in the league.
    If you are looking for a complete training program and plan that is the same one followed by today’s top pro athletes, head to athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System. Yea but...once upon a time was doing what you recommend and did not point both feet in the same direction the back foot was sideways. Popped my knee, dislocated, was in a cast for 6 weeks. Found out at that time also am allergic to white tape. Got a rash, could not scratch. When the cast was cut off the doctor puked from the stench of rotting flesh and left the room. So...thinking don't want to do that again.

    I would just like to say that I did a leg workout featuring 6 different single-leg exercises two days ago. Not only could I tell which side was weaker by the end of the first circuit, I was also able to get muscle damage that I haven't gotten in months through dual-leg exercises. I'll be doing a single-leg lower body workout once a week with a dual-leg lower body workout once a week for the next few months to hopefully fix my imbalances. Thank you so much for this!

      I mean, Jason and Jeff are training for completely different reasons. specificity for a field athlete and a powerlifter are completely different. I guess I can see some of Jeff's points, and taking up all a field athletes mrv up with just heavy squats to make their squat better is definitely unnecessary. Once they get decently strong on the basics (which I'm sure most are by the time they get to an elite level) they need to be doing mostly drills and specific training for their position so they can get better at what they are paid to do, and the weight room is lower on their trainers and coaches priorities. If you get a football player as strong as a powerlifter it won't make him that much better at football, but if you get him specifically trained for his position, conditioned and strong that's how you make an elite athlete. I still think most single leg exercises are a waste of mrv as well but what do I know? Hope Jason talks about this though.

    I just recently started incorporating bulgarian split squats in my leg training. I do them as my warm up exercise to squats. In addition to all the muscular and athletic benefits, adding in different approaches to leg training (multi plane, explosive, single leg...etc) keeps things fun and I've noticed it can keep clients more motivated, which will also have benefits. Additionally it can be a great way to tackle plateaus.

    • @b0jang
      @b0jang 6 лет назад

      Do you rotate through the different approaches week by week?

    • @xtraOrdinaryAthletes
      @xtraOrdinaryAthletes 6 лет назад +4

      The way I would structure a program would really depend on the person and their goals. But if I am creating some sort of program for someone who for instance intends on hitting every muscle group 2 times a week, then I may be inclined to have 1 leg day focusing moreso on the standard compound lifts and some accessory lifts, and the other leg day to focus more on experimenting with other leg training approaches, such as more explosive training. But again though, this will really depend on the person, their goals, their preferences and their schedule/consistency with training. Hope that makes sense.

    • @legaleagle46
      @legaleagle46 6 лет назад

      I find that that approach works well for other days (chest, back, arms, and shoulders), too. In fact, I try never to do exactly the same type of workout twice in a row for any body part -- mixing it up and constantly experimenting with the stuff that Jeff shows us on here (or at least changing the order of the exercises from time to time) is not only fun and challenging, but it also constantly shocks my body because it forces it to work my muscles in a new and different way every time!

    • @xtraOrdinaryAthletes
      @xtraOrdinaryAthletes 6 лет назад +1

      Definitely agree! You're right about even just sometimes changing the order of exercises from time to time. Even that can often provide a different stimulus for the muscles!

    • @legaleagle46
      @legaleagle46 6 лет назад +2

      And I know I'm doing it right when my muscles (say, my pecs on Chest Day) start screaming "What the HELL is he doing to us?" and end with them screaming for mercy and threatening "So help us, if you make us do ONE more rep..." even the next day (interspersed with comments of "We HATE you and are never letting you get near that gym again!" - although usually, it's my legs that scream that last part)! :-D

    People need to realize their body is like a machine. Imagine working on your car, but you've always been told to use a wrench. Another guy says, "Dude. Use a ratchet." Still..the guy insists on using the wrench, instead of the ratchet...when in reality, both serve the same purpose and are used to compliment each other, with the task they are asked to do. From my own experience, I've found, that my legs feel much stronger and healthy, when I incorporate both...single leg exercises with squats and dead lifts. I always finish my squat days with Bulgarian split squats. and my Dead lift days with single Romanian Dead Lifts with a dumb bell to target the hamstrings, which helps the knees. Love this channel!!!
