  • This is a compilation from a full length video on how I painted a hummingbird in watercolour. Set to music you will see the hummingbird gradually come to life as I work in layers of paint. Building from the foundation washes to the finishing fine details. The real time video has complete narration start to finish. I paint the whole bird and talk through the entire process as I do so. You won't miss a thing and my friendly, non-jargon way of teaching will hopefully put you at ease. The full video is on my watercolour tutorial website: www.devonartis... so pop along and learn to paint wildlife in watercolour alongside myself and fellow artists.

    I enjoyed this preview. I like how you had the camera close up and I could see all of the details.

    Your choice of subjects are my favorites. Can I ask what your brand of paints you use? I have ordered winsor newton and sennelier as well as a few daniel smith.

      Hi Horse Women2000, yes I use the Winsor & Newton brand which are mostly the half pans with some tubed paints. If you are interested I do have the paints and materials I use set out on my web page devonartist.co.uk/materials-i-use-or-recommend-for-realistic-watercolour/
      Thank you for asking, Paul :-)

    We just started watercolour in our class and we asked to pick a bird and I decided to do a Calliope female humming bird. Any tips for a beginner?
    Also watching your videos are so satisfying I like they way you talk and tell us how to do it !!

      Hi Elizabeth, when you first start a bird painting make sure you sit, relax, and then test out your ideas and colours onto some scrap watercolour paper first. That way, fingers crossed, there will be fewer mistakes along the way, so think preparation. Most of all, have fun! Paul 🎨

    Probably A stupid question but I’m wondering what do you use to sketch with? I’m thinking a regular pencil would probably leave traces. Are you using a regular colored pencil?

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  3 года назад +1

      Hi Joanna, I just use a mechanical pencil to lightly add the lines. I use this whether I draw freehand or use graphite paper to transfer a very detailed photo. Here is a video I put together you may find of use for using this and other ideas. Paul :-) bit.ly/3rBQXHK

      @@TheDevonArtist oh, ok. Thnx so much. I tried pencil once or twice but it smeared and showed through. Guess I pressed to hard and the tip was too much. I will check out your other videos. Thnx again.

      @@joannaremson3657 Hi Joanna, just remember to not press on too hard when using a pencil as it will damage the paper surface. Plus use a putty eraser to lightly dab (not rub) off some of the darker lines to lighten them, so you can just see them. :-)

    You lost me on this one, since it is not a "tutorial", just watching you, as AWESOME as you are, doesn't help me, I need to hear the instructions, whether it's wet on wet, or vs... sorry

      Hi Lauren, yes I completely understand. I do have to be careful sometimes how much I give away as this is obviously a full real-time talking video on my Patreon channel www.patreon.com/TheDevonArtist Obviously it wouldn't be fair on my members who pay for the full video. I do try to vary the uploads I have here some to music and some with me chatting away. Thank you for liking my work, I do try to please. Paul :-)
