The challenge should come from the text and connect with the need of the listeners. In other words, we do not challenge people so that we feel better about ourselves, but to serve God and the people we are speaking to.
That's a good question Jacob. Here is a brief set of suggestions. 1. Only challenge a group if you've already demonstrated in your lesson that you are willing to accept the challenge yourself; 2. Offer the challenge in the context of community. In other words, "let's embrace this challenge together"; 3. Make it a challenge that each member can interpret in their own context. Don't make it too narrow. For example, "Go and invite 10 people on the street this week to church" may not be possible if someone is housebound; 4. Make sure the challenge is relevant to the overall point of your lesson. In other words, be careful not to challenge people with something that is burdening you, but is not relevant to the text; 5. On a similar note, make sure the challenge is helpful for the group, and not simply something that's on your heart. I hope that helps. What are your thoughts?
@@TuesdayTeachingTips I think this is a great way to offer an opportunity to live their faith. I especially like the point of relating the challenge to the main point of the sermon. I preach in July for the first time and have no training. Our lead pastor lives by the learn by experience philosophy. So, I'm doing all I can to be prepared.
I’m trying to choose a topic that people would want to hear. I am preparing a sermon but I want to be accurate. What should I do to avoid too much interpretation?
Good question. It depends on what you mean by interpretation. If you mean context, then give just enough so that the people listening can understand the background to the passage. Do not dwell too much on background, unless it is a technical teaching class. If you are talking about theological interpretation, then one way to do this is to share one or two different interpretations of the passage, and then give your own. You don’t have to proclaim that yours is the only correct one, because part of preaching and teaching is to help people think for themselves.
Hi, I am learning to write Sermons, I studied Homiletics in Spanish and English, but have not practice writing many sermons, so I still may not be experienced in it. Question: After choosing my text that I will be teaching about, for example, Psalm 34:8. As the introduction, can I introduce Jeremiah 17:5? One of these texts speaks of blessings, but the last one speaks of a curse, as an opposition to the first text. Can they both be in the beginning of the Sermon? Thank you! Loved this video!
“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” (Psalm 34:8 NIV11) “This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the LORD.” (Jeremiah 17:5 NIV11) Hi Alma, Thanks for getting in touch. Here’s my brief answer. It is legitimate and often helpful to make a contrast in the introduction to a sermon. In other words you are setting out what you are going to talk about, and what you are not going to talk about. Or, what stands opposed to your main topic. As such, pairing Jeremiah 17 with Psalm 34 makes sense. Please let me know how your sermons develop. God bless, Malcolm
A speaker should not be afraid of challenging his or her audience. Jesus did this - for example in his conversation with the expert in the law. After teaching the parable, he told him, ““Go and do likewise.”” (Luke 10:37 NIV11). Does that answer your question, Bridgette?
My problem is im not a talker and i cant just whip up enough words to last 20 minutes. When i talk about something im done with it within 2 minutes. My pastor is asking me to do a sermon next week bc he will be on vacation and idk what to do.
My advice would be to think less about the length of the lesson, and more about the significance of what you want to talk about. Find a passage in the Bible or a biblical topic which is meaningful to you. Start there, and then begin to structure what you want to say about it.
a pastor asked me to preach this coming Sunday and I am like what? I guess 1 Corinthians 1:27 applies to me for I am like what am I going to say to seasoned people
That’s a good scripture to meditate on. “Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” (John 7:18 NIV11)
I got a question. I’m trying to preach publicly for the first time. Do you worry how long or how short the sermon be, for beginners what do you think the length should be?
Great question. First of all I would ask the person who has given you the opportunity to preach if they have a preference for the length. Secondly, I would not worry about the length, because worry does not help the quality of your lesson. Thirdly, consider the context of your lesson - expectations of your audience, comfort of your audience and their ability to absorb what you're saying etc are all factors to take into consideration. Fourthly, always go for shorter than longer if you can. I hope that helps. Let me know how things go.

Thanks for the question Kathleen. Yawning is a sign of nerves. It’s not uncommon for soldiers to yawn before going into combat. In themselves, nerves are not a problem. In fact it could be argued that they are helpful. The key is to recognise your nervousness and turn it into something positive. Before you speak you will need to take some time to acknowledge any tension you feel, offer it to God in meditative prayer, and ask him to help you turn your nervousness into excitement. Please let me know how you get on.
To make it very simple: 1. You are a Christian; 2. You believe in God’s word and live your beliefs to your of best ability; 3. The Christian community you belong to believe that you’re speaking would edify the group.
Without knowing the context I can only suggest principles. 1. A passage you know well; 2. A narrative passage (a story); 3. Keep the focus on Jesus (assuming it will be a Christian message); 4. If you need a translator look up my video with tips on that issue; 5. Keep it short; 6. Ask ahead of time what the local needs are; 7. Be personable- i.e. open about yourself and how you apply what you are preaching (the good and the bad). I hope that helps. Please let me know how you get on.
What qualifies you to “preach” your first sermon?
To make it very simple: 1. You are a Christian; 2. You believe in God’s word and live your beliefs to your of best ability; 3. The Christian community you belong to believe that you’re speaking would edify the group.

Very helpful way for start-up for a sermon
Preach to a church of one.
I am going to preach in a country oversea for the first time, which scripture you advise me to tell??
Thanks
Without knowing the context I can only suggest principles. 1. A passage you know well; 2. A narrative passage (a story); 3. Keep the focus on Jesus (assuming it will be a Christian message); 4. If you need a translator look up my video with tips on that issue; 5. Keep it short; 6. Ask ahead of time what the local needs are; 7. Be personable- i.e. open about yourself and how you apply what you are preaching (the good and the bad). I hope that helps. Let me know how it goes, and if you have a recording please send me the link. God bless, Malcolm

How Did It Go?
@@michaelcarlos7605 our Bishop Pastor and also he's my theologian teacher approved my sermon & Congratulated me but our Church founder says that my sermon is okey, but im not suppose to let the congregation read the Bible chapter and verse, bla bla bla a lot more he says. That's why until now i can't move on with what he said. And until now i don't want to stand in front and exhort a message.
Can you please Pray fOr me?
Thank yOu.
