They were once surprisingly found in the Rio Buen Sucesso , Ometepe, an island in lake Nicaragua. They were seen with archocentrus centrarchus, longis, nigrofasciatus, multis and rostratum, the experts concluded they swam from the san juan thru the lake, but they don't know why.
Thank you for your sharing Bill! Have you still keeping these tuba cichlids in the hobby? I have got one from the Cichlids of the Americas and still have no idea on the form of herbivorous food that could serve as their proper diet. Could these guys get fed on the algae flakes in the long run?
Thanks Daniel, no, I’ve not got them anymore :-(. I have got Asfraci. I wouldn’t worry too much about the diet, veggies like frozen peas, Brockley etc work well.
I picked up a tubo early in the year, I have him/her in a tank with a bichir, fire eel, Nicaragua cichlid. is that ok and what other fish do you recommend as tank mates? I really cant find any info online. thank you. Frank
Hi Frank, it all depends on your tank size. They get to about 12 inches, and like all Central American cichlids can be aggressive, particularly when breeding. Other cichlids of similar size/aggression should be ok - but the bigger the tank the better.
Great informative video mate
Thanks BFL, it’s been bugging me for ages if they are the same species, finally got to the bottom of it lol
Another great video Bill,
Lots of great info Bill, looking to get some myself so found everything really useful
Thanks Allan, hope you get some - let me know how you get on with them.
Great info Bill, they’re definitely on my wish - list, stunning specimens 🐟🤩
Cheers Raymie

I had heard this, fascinating how they could have got there.
