      Not asking 4 a reaction, tho that'd be great, but Beatles were right! Treat yourself to Dylan's "Like a rolling stone" someday soon, WITH (crucial!) the lyrics! His voice, yeah, can be hard to follow (or endure, lol!), but there is SO MUCH going on with his incredible tale of a rich socialite girl who decides it will be fun to "slum it" in the ghetto, but then falls into homelessness and addiction. (Truer fans of Dylan will correct me, and should!) Each verse is more mind-blowingly brilliant than the one before it.

      Totally! Rubber Soul brought me BACK to the Beatles as it reflected a more mature shift from the early "cutsy" Beatles your parents loved...ugh. I was 14 when the Beatles arrived in 1964 and it wasn't until Rubber Soul did they start to compete with all the other music happening at the time: Motown, Rock was getting harder and trippier, the anti War movement was creating message music and yes even the good old Beach boys, whatever.

    Funny story about the first time The Beatles smoked weed: Paul McCartney started freaking out about some realization he had, so he asked their roadie Mal Evans to grab him a pen and a piece of paper so he could write down this incredible idea he just had. It was recorded October 12th to November 11th = 4 weeks + 2 days. From Beatles recording sessions by Mark Lewisohn: John and Paul had to force themselves to come up with more than a dozen songs because they had very little material. Yes Wait was a hold over from Help a WGO was an old tune that Ringo contributed some lyrics, but they didn't even have the double A side single, Day Tripper + We can work it out, written and the weren't on the lp but recorded at the same time. Sorry for being so misleading 😆

      @@johnyarusso4953 It's just crazy to claim it was as cut and dried as 4 weeks. Norwegian wood was likely completely written in January 1965, Michelle was written in like 1959, a good portion of Girl was written in September 1963, some of In My Life was written in 1964, etc. etc.

      You are definitely not a songwriter. Sure, we all have fragments of song ideas floating around but until it's finished, it's not a song. I just didn't like what I felt I was feeling - I thought it was an out-and-out skit, you know, but it wasn't. It was great. I mean, he wasn't playing any tricks on me. "Sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble" - French for "These are words that go together well." - THINK FOR YOURSELF is not a love song - George said he was aiming the lyrics to British politicians. - Finally, most people who love the Beatles feel that RUBBER SOUL is the beginning of their "second phase" which ended with YELLOW SUBMARINE (released later, but recorded in 1967), and their "third phase" started in 1968 after their return from India, and their first single, HEY JUDE b/w REVOLUTION. Their "fourth phase" might be considered their post Beatles songs.

    This album seems to be more significant to and highly admired by older Beatles fans who were around from the beginning as it not only represented a real turning point for the band but also for pop/rock music itself. To me it represents The Beatles at their collaborative if not musical peak as they were still more of a band than individual song writers who had stopped touring and gone their separate ways to a degree. This album draws from many different genres including pop, folk, motown, country, psychedelic rock, ballads and this is where the band and George Martin really started to use the studio to augment and boost the bands creativity and sound. George Harrison said that this was his favourite Beatles album and I agree. Great commentary and reaction Darius. You really get The Beatles in the way few reactors or people I know do. Great work

      It helps to see it as a parody of those "love" songs which promote possessiveness and jealousy as signs of true love. It is a play on Elvis' Let's Play House, with some of the lyrics cribbed directly. John just takes these songs to their logical conclusion, which is spousal abuse and murder. I think he regrets that the song was so tongue-in-cheek as he began to realize the scope of the problem and seriousness of it. But it's meant to be a reductio ad absurdum for those songs.

    • @savanna1980
      @savanna1980 4 месяца назад +1

      @@Kieopyou're 100% right that it was written as a referendum. The problem was that the listening audience missed the absurdity, and took the song literally. And because Lennon was so idolized, it came off like he was advocating for it. But, knowing how Lennon treated women behind close doors, it's a haunting listen for me.

      I wanna say they lost the couple (they thought the couple was gonna kill them lol) and ended up at a club Jimi Hendrix was playing at, but don't take my word for it. They did end up at a club tho I believe.
      But that's why you don't drug people without telling them first. Pretty terrible on thier part. I can just imagine the wife hitting her husband as he's chasing the national treasure aka THE BEATLES through town completely panicking that they're all gonna wreck and die.
