$250 dollars and a carton of smokes! Ah, 1963 we miss you.
$750 my friend! Insane!
I remember the album well. I was 7 years old. We played it quite often and enjoyed it. I use to wonder what the Kennedys really thought of it. After the coming November however it was shelved and never listened to again. Nothing seemed the same after that.
We had that album, also.....my mom loved JFK!! And, same, after that fateful day, it seemed to disappear!!
my parents bought the "first family" album when it first came out. i still have it in my album collection along with my monty python, george carlin and cheech and chong albums. its funny. its probably available on youtube. check it out.
I've seen asking him this question during the end of an interview. I remember clearly that he chuckled and said. "He sounds more like Teddy."
How much fun - and, in hindsight, how tragic (the first round with the 'First Family'). I won't write anything about the contestants, other than to say I was stuck - between choosing from 2 of the 3 (I won't say which 😉).
I always loved this show - Ms. Cass was so smart, and Tom Poston - such a funny man. Ms. Carlyle-Hart - she always made those terrific entrances - all decked out.
They did a study, about 20 years ago - to find out which type of show was the 'best' to watch to cheer one up, and the answer - by a long-shot; game shows (NOT comedies). The reason? people imagined themselves as possibly playing (and winning, 'natch).
It used to be great; all the game shows on, all day, and as a kid when you got to stay home, I remember just plopping my head on the pillows, and watching one-after-another.
Interesting. I just watch an episode of a long lost sitcom from 1989 that I never heard of. It depressed the hell out of me because it was so poorly written.
like you, I was stuck between two and three! I’ve always loved game shows, when I was a kid I remember being so happy when they won in the winner circle in the $100,000 pyramid, etc. To this day I still watch them and I’m still so happy when they win, definitely a mood booster!
What a delight to see Theodore Bikel. ❤
Vaughan Meader: almost exactly 1 year of fame that came to an end in an instant.
I was stuck for a minute on your comment and wondered if Mr. Meader had passed away. Then it hit me what you meant. It was before my time so it took me a minute. Sad.
This was of course before my time, but I knew what you meant. It is indeed sad as Vaughn Meader was very talented.
Theodore Bikel did a nice job for being a "rookie" on the panel. Captain Kittinger was a brave man. Thanks for the video.
At 6:08 he sounds just like Zoltan Karpathy, the Hungarian language detective he was about to play in My Fair Lady.
I love when Tom Poston questions any contestants about flying. He was the man in ww2, check out his bio.
Me too! It's so exciting because he's a master on the subject!
THE SAND PEBBLES was a box office success in 1966 and starred Steve McQueen.
Correct name is Naomi Brossart.
As of March 2021 Joe Kittinger is still kickin' at 93. Quite an accomplished pilot.
You just HAD to say that, didn't you? Now the guy is dead.
I had the privilege of meeting him at the Florida Sheriff's Boys Ranch in the early 2000's.
OMG , a whole carton !!!!
Her segment on the album is my favorite. The blue room named for President Blue. Same as today.
Nice reminder of a very funny album! (I have both volumes.)
There are a couple of things I'd like to point out, though ...
1. The actress' name is Naomi Brossart. (It sounds like she says Brockhart, but the album says Brossart.)
2. President Kennedy actually liked the album, but thought Mr. Meader sounded more like his brother Ted than himself. I don't believe he ever got to hear the second volume.
3. On the night of 22 Nov 1963, comedian Lenny Bruce appeared on stage somewhere (I don't recall where), and he opened his act by saying, "Man, Vaughn Meader is screwed."
And unfortunately, Mr. Bruce (not a favorite of mine) was correct.
Richard McKenna would die of a heart attack at the age of 51 less than 2 years after this show was broadcast.
The assassination pretty much ended this tour.
I vaguely remember the album, which my parents had. Although I haven't heard it in years, I picked the correct person. I got the 1st 2 right, but not the 3rd. Nice to see what Theodore Bikel looked like back then.
I ❤ architects!
Theodorre Bikel! Such a great actor.
OH! also, check out the captain's bio and good luck trying to find his book! I always try to purchase a copy of the books to read mentioned in the show..this is the first time I haven't been able to locate a copy.
i'm at 5:18 and I say number 3, Update: damnit, i lost. I was born in the 80's and find this show very lovely indeed
Capt. Joe Kittinger is an amazing man. I read about him a few years ago--he was a consultant then on another incredibly high parachute jump that broke his record.
It's so sad that Vaughn Meader's career ended with the death of John F. Kennedy. He was very funny.
Poor Vaughan Meader didn't fare well after this show. After JFK was killed, his previously scheduled engagements were cancelled. He tried two non-JFK records that did not do well. He did not save his money, and was broke in a few years. He sang folk and bluegrass at small fairs and carnivals and tended bar. He did in the mid 2000's.
The lesson of Vaughn's career is not to put all your eggs in one basket.
Love Bud Collyer! Nothing about Gary Moore's color version, but this is the BETTER version, i.e. the old black and whites.
I thought the first panel was really delightful. They all seemed so sweet besides being so well informed. The gal in the middle was an absolute doll.
Yes, I voted for her.
Little did Vaughn Meader know that by November he would fall into total dark obscurity. A man who went from the heights of show business to the bottom in a few short years.
Lady #1 in Game #1
Man #2 in Game #2
Man #3 in Game #3
Unfortunately RUclips spoiling and trolling is becoming all too common today.
Fellow UNC grad Richard McKenna cherished that carton of Salems that he got from this appearance. He did not even open them until one day in 1964, when, as a tribute to his new home state of North Carolina, McKenna decided to smoke the entire carton all at once. Soon, he was dead as a result of failure to live.
Naomi Brossart! !Naomi Brossart!
Theo Bikel is perhaps best remembered for having originated the role of Captain Georg von Trapp in "The Sound of Music" on Broadway back in 1959.
He was also in the movie The African Queen...
@@randysills4418 also did a Columbo episode
I love architects!
Naomi BROSSART is her name!
What did JFK *really* say?? He said (paraphrase) that it was great but he sounded more like Teddy.
I STILL can't believe Budd! "Here's a carton of cigarettes and God Bless."
Back then, my mom smoked 2+ packs of Salems a day, and as a small child, I ended up inhaling them all as well. :-/
Still on your high horse.
I miss Polly !!!! Is Peggy wearing a hair wig ?
Only 10 months before the assassination !!!!
I vote Playtex for girdle.
He had another 11 months before his career basically came to an end.
drainer AMV
I new it was the number one woman's
Most assuredly not the brightest year for Vaughn Meador..
Yeah, and don’t forget that carton of Salem’s on your way out.
They are worth their weight in gold.
A carton of Salems. 😖
Zilan is a place of a Kurdish rebellion in 1930.
10 months before the assassination.
Ça Vou
I vote Salem !
Kitty CarLYLE he always says.
His last remark goes out to Joe Biden.
They each won a carton of cigarettes-- worth about $3 in 1963 currency, but worth millions in healthcare cost.
So does alcohol, drugs and hundreds of other addictions.
Now of days cartons are $100
Mumble rap and tattoos are right around corner.
