Just finished a run of this show in Edinburgh, playing Martha. The best experience of my life was standing on that stage singing this song with the company. The a capella section makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end every time. Much prefer this to the version that was recorded. I wish they'd all get back together again and record this version. Cannot describe fully my love for this song. Thank goodness i get to do the show again in the fringe. All shall know the wonder. -3
i LOVE this version of Purple Summer My musical theatre group of about 10 people did it.. I have the solo in the beginning, it's SO pretty!! We're going to compete in festival with it!
This version kicks the recorded versions ass. The harmonies are immaculate. I'm actually getting a tattoo saying "All Shall Know The Wonder..." on the back of my neck.
i honestly get chills everytime. this song is simply beautiful. i saw it back in december and i broke down during this song... well among MANY others. i love spring awakening!!!
at first i didn't because i just wasn't used to these lyrics (i listen to the OBCR a lot) but they still have my fav part when they say "the clouds begin to thunder, crickets wander murmuring" so that's cool, i agree
I can't help it, the feelings this song inspires in me are ridiculous. This coming from the guy whose seen tons of broadway plays, and yet this is by far my favorite of all of em. The feelings this song brings out are so...un-explainable...it just sort of breaks you apart. It's so hopeful and so lovely it just makes you want to go on...there is a place beyond grief...it's so touching...I said it before, and I'll say it again, this play had me bawling, most especially at this song...it just is.
Listen to what's in the heart of a child, A song so big in one so small Soon you will hear where beauty lies, You'll hear and you'll recall The sadness, the doubt, all the loss the grief, Will belong to some play from the past, As the child leads the way to a dream a belief, A time of hope through the land A summer's day A mother sings A song of purple summer Through the heart of everything And heaven waits So close it seems To show her child the wonders Of a world beyond her dreams The earth will wave with corn The day so wide, so warm And mares will neigh With stallions that they mate Foals they've borne And all shall know the wonder Of purple summer And so I wait The swallow brings A song of what's to follow The glory of the spring The fences sway The porches swing The clouds begin to thunder Crickets wander murmuring The earth will wave with corn The day so wide, so warm And mares will neigh With stallions that they mate Foals they've borne And all shall know the wonder I will sing the song of purple summer All shall know the wonder I will sing the song of purple summer And all shall know the wonder Of purple summer
Damn, I never got to see this live. I only saw a recorded version. I like this version of the song better. The other one is great, but I just really like this.
I'm not sure why. I also know that this "new version" of purple summer didn't start on broadway until at least 6 months into the show. They were still singing the off boradway lyrics for a good bit.
no way! this is so much better. if ur refering to the cast album, then you can't really fairly compare, cause this is a live recording, (not their best) just listen, the harmonies in this one are for richer, it's like it has a whole nother dimension
You will find that the version that is on cast recordings is often quite unlike the one from the show. It is the recording--and not this performance--that is a little deviant. This is the arrangement used in the show; the CD is different, not this performance.
i love this versoin so much more that the original. the 6 part harmonies bring me to tears. i love it so much. and its the perfect number for right after melchior finds out that wendla died too. its so spriritually uplifiting and hopeful
So we're singing this song in Choir and I'm so excited. I've loved this song since I first heard it back when it was on Broadway and our choir is massive so the harmonies will sound amazing. I liteally had a freak out moment when my teacher passed out this song. I am so emotionally attached to this song it isn't funny.
Just finished being in the first ever Broadway licensed student production of it, and this song and the harmonies moved all of us, every single time we preformed it. It was an amazing experience and something ill always treasure!
It's funny. The scene with melchior where they're facing out into the audience wad done like that because she was an appalling actress but her voice was so beautiful that they cast her.. It just so happened that the symbolism of the way it was staged was PERFECT!
You should've seen me sitting in one of the stage seats then lol...right side front row second seat furthest from the audience. I was wearing a blue shirt ;)
Thanks very much for this! I'm trying to learn the full song for a course and my musical theory is atrocious, so this is really helpful :) And beautiful.
Do you have this in mp3?? i would really like to have it? please answer... this is the best version ever.. i saw it on January 16th and the new cast didin't do it as well as in this version.. thanks!! Amazing is the only word to describe it
now i have to say i love this new version dearly, and the imagery makes a ton more sense, but i already loved the original song of purple summer! it was so simple yet completely pure and honest, and thats what i loved about the old one. this ones great, but it seems a bit too overwrought. anyone agree?
God Lauren Pritchard is so great! And what do you mean, you like the original version better? ... This is the original version. ... This is how it is in the script. They changed it for the CD for some unknown reason. and some of the other songs have different lyrics from the script to the CD. Touch me, ummm... and a couple others, crap... I can't think of them now. ... But they change things for the CD quite often.
I guess I'm the only one who thinks that the original recording sounds better. I agree, the harmonies are amazing, but the lyrics of the original I believe are more to the point and meaningful.
I love the song itself but I'm not crazy about the beginning soloist and some of the execution throughout :/ dynamics are good but i'd expect more uniformity!
I prefer the stronger connection to nature in the original version tbh, keeps more in line with the motif. This one's, in my opinion, kinda goofy. And how can you take away the gray-fly choir line??
I haven't listend to Spring Awakening in foreeeevverr and I look up the song of the purple summer and I'm listening to this and I'm like....this isn't purple summer. haha. I guess they changed it.
I'm Sorry,But,Though These Actors Were Great ! The Show That Was Done at The University of Iowa,Just a Few Months Back Really Stood Up,In My Opinon,As Better Casting,Direction,Acting & Singing ! What An Awesome,Musical !Wish the University Would,Sell Dvd's ! It WAS One of The Best Live Preformances,I Have Ever Seen !!So Much Courage With Such ,"Touchy" Subjects ! Ecspecially, In Iowa !!! I Know the Student Actors,Came Away From The Whole Experiance,Seeing that not Much Has Changed in 100 Yrs.!!
Oh no, an out of tune note during a live show! As much as they are professionals, they are human and may make minor mistakes here and there. Appreciate this awesome recording and Sheik and Sater's added harmonies to the piece!
wtf?! those aren't the lyrics! i mean, i guess they are now, but what reason on earth would they have for changing the lyrics? what's wrong with the original ones?

the first time i saw this show,
i cried like ever other song.
but this made me like weep.

Jesus. This song is beyond gorgeous.

oh god... i love Ilse's voice. its so unique and beautiful
omg, they sound so beautiful.
Thank you so much for posting this!!!
Ah, gorgeous. I love music.
pdxoracle, you and me both. Nothing has ever moved me quite like this musical.
I just finished my run as Ilse. This means so much.
Listen to what's in the heart of a child,
A song so big in one so small
Soon you will hear where beauty lies,
You'll hear and you'll recall
The sadness, the doubt, all the loss the grief,
Will belong to some play from the past,
As the child leads the way to a dream a belief,
A time of hope through the land
A summer's day
A mother sings
A song of purple summer
Through the heart of everything
And heaven waits
So close it seems
To show her child the wonders
Of a world beyond her dreams
The earth will wave with corn
The day so wide, so warm
And mares will neigh
With stallions that they mate
Foals they've borne
And all shall know the wonder
Of purple summer
And so I wait
The swallow brings
A song of what's to follow
The glory of the spring
The fences sway
The porches swing
The clouds begin to thunder
Crickets wander murmuring
The earth will wave with corn
The day so wide, so warm
And mares will neigh
With stallions that they mate
Foals they've borne
And all shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of purple summer
All shall know the wonder
I will sing the song of purple summer
And all shall know the wonder
Of purple summer

they should've had this on the OBCR, seriously.
Actually, the version we heard on the CD is the version BEFORE they went to Broadway. They recorded it after the Off-Broadway run.
You will find that the version that is on cast recordings is often quite unlike the one from the show. It is the recording--and not this performance--that is a little deviant. This is the arrangement used in the show; the CD is different, not this performance.
ah this is amazing! i like the version from the show so much better than the version from the OBCR...although i've never seen the show :(
this song makes me feel so much
Yep, Last night I saw it the Final in Columbus..It was amazing...I cried so much and I loved the music...
this is incredible!!!
This song made me cry so fucking hard...it's my favorite Broadway song everr
Lauren Pritchard's voice is incredible, perfect for the solo!
i love this versoin so much more that the original. the 6 part harmonies bring me to tears. i love it so much. and its the perfect number for right after melchior finds out that wendla died too. its so spriritually uplifiting and hopeful

lauren pritchard's voice is so entrancing. it's just so...different. I love it.

This is definitely May 19th, 2007 :) (I'm in a wonderful denial that it isn't pathetic that I recognized it right away)
The English Theatre of Frankfurt cast recording is quite good (and is in English). Don't know where you are, but you can get it on Amazon in the U.S.
Do you have this in mp3?? i would really like to have it? please answer... this is the best version ever.. i saw it on January 16th and the new cast didin't do it as well as in this version.. thanks!! Amazing is the only word to describe it
3:20 is absolutely gorgeous.
The touring cast does such am amazing job at this song.
Yes. I think this arrangement is. I know you can have it in a few ways now.
There are sites in which you can download the mp3.
Brilliant quality! (where was it recorded from?) Thanks so much for posting this.
I completely agree with you.
Why must it close??
I'm gonnna miss it on Broadway =[
Anyone know where I could get a full soundtrack of the "current" versions of the songs?
now i have to say i love this new version dearly, and the imagery makes a ton more sense, but i already loved the original song of purple summer!
it was so simple yet completely pure and honest, and thats what i loved about the old one. this ones great, but it seems a bit too overwrought. anyone agree?

This is...beyond words! Wow.
Could you please please please post a link to an mp3?? (Or where you got this?)
I guess I'm the only one who thinks that the original recording sounds better. I agree, the harmonies are amazing, but the lyrics of the original I believe are more to the point and meaningful.
I like the obcr version a lot better
THANK YOU!
did you see the tonys?
it was painfull!
I love the song itself but I'm not crazy about the beginning soloist and some of the execution throughout :/ dynamics are good but i'd expect more uniformity!
amazing! what camera did you use? the sound is incredible!!
This is lovely! Who is performing?
oooo!! so are we! do you know where you got the music 'cause we only have a weird revised version
I prefer the stronger connection to nature in the original version tbh, keeps more in line with the motif. This one's, in my opinion, kinda goofy. And how can you take away the gray-fly choir line??
PLEASE send us the mp3 link!!
I haven't listend to Spring Awakening in foreeeevverr and I look up the song of the purple summer and I'm listening to this and I'm like....this isn't purple summer. haha. I guess they changed it.
What are the words to the first lines Lauren Pritchard is singing?
yeah i would love the mp3 if you have it
Does anyone know if this version is recordedand available anywhere?
@MsCillaVanilla You mean Lauren Pritchard, the original Ilse? XD

Why? That's not normally the order of things. I mean I guess it's not a big deal, but that's not normally how it's done...
Why does it go loud and quiet?
Oh no, an out of tune note during a live show! As much as they are professionals, they are human and may make minor mistakes here and there.
Appreciate this awesome recording and Sheik and Sater's added harmonies to the piece!
Could you tell us from which pages can we download this new version please?
Can anyone tell me what the lyrics are for this? I can't find them anywhere on google.
I like these lyrics more, actually.
it's closing!?
hahaah i think we could have left the rent revival out. :D but you'll definately see me at the auditions for the revival.
wtf?! those aren't the lyrics! i mean, i guess they are now, but what reason on earth would they have for changing the lyrics? what's wrong with the original ones?
is this a direct mic feed?
@HappyThoughtsToU yes.
what date is this from?
is this lauren?
harmonies by Ann Marie Millazz!!!
Where is this version from?
WHY DID THEY CHANGE IT! the old one was so much better
that is interesting.
6 people don't know the wonder.
Ok, Moritz.
I like the original song better, but when I went to go see it (in LA) this is the version they sang. I don't like the intro as much as the no intro.
ive got the libretto and thats the words in it.
Oh man... you can just hear Brian C Johnson in there weighin it down.
The JUICIEST chords
i have the lyrics if you want them =]
I know for a fact it is.
lauren pritchard
Oh man, I really prefer the original. Still good though.
Original is SO much better. I do like the new beginning but I wish they could just tag that on, after have the beginning piano interlude, then stick to the original :)
