This comment is for anyone who feels alone:
I went on several long sobriety streaks as a subscriber of this channel in 2023. I recently relapsed and felt such immense shame, I avoided this content altogether for a while.
I am now sober… again and don’t ever plan on going back. This community is amazing and the support is fantastic. You are not alone; we all stumble.
Please don’t retreat into yourself when you feel like a failure (like I did). Rely on the people who build you up and lean into their support.

What helps and works for me is taking longer walks, exercising, walking the dogs, training them, playing more guitar, making more hot sauce, growing my own vegetables, learning more about what I am interested in, cooking, doing the dishes, cleaning, writing songs...little by little, find what you really wanna do and do it, and you will never get bored again...2,5 years sober, with all these activities in place, feel great and on the right track to happy and productive life...troubles will come, but will face them sober...focus on the goal, and it is to remain being clean and things should come together.peace

So, long story short, i'm from Croatia and when I traveled to the States for the first time to record an album with my band Voodoo Lizards back in 2010's, I fell in love with the hot sauces haha, so brought home a whole bag of them...And as my folks did gardening and such, i thought, well I can make better hot sauce, fresh and organic...So I did. Started growing chilies and fermenting sauces...People started asking for them...and little by little, i started to sell them...still a small business, but supply a couple of local restaurants and dedicated customers who return to my sauces, made naturally...I call my sauce Jucifer Hot Sauce, cause my name is Jura and they call me Juc...anyone can make great hot saus at home, I can share a couple of recipes for the community! I was sober for 10 years. I moved back to my old neighborhood and was flooded with memories of "I used to drink there" basically every bar, bowling alley, park, lake, recreation area, motorcycle clubhouse, everywhere. I picked up the bottle, and it was okay until it wasn't.
I was 4 days sober until my darling wife hit a deer last night, and that was my excuse to drink... again! So day one, and determined to stop.
Watch videos like this, surround myself with people who don't drink, fly my drone, learn video editing, walk the dog, go for a motorcycle ride, talk to my wife (she is an amazing supportive woman) call my kids.

    3. Gaming (never was a big gamer and my ADD tends to prevent me from playing for more than 2 hours)
    4. Journaling
    5. Listening to music
    6. Listening to Podcasts
    7. Going to AA meetings
    8. Watching ‘Sober Lifestyle’ content (like this)
    9. Being more selfless and being of service to others (I.E making more effort to be a helping hand to my elderly parents)
    10. Being more mindful of emotions.
Big Tip that helps me: H.A.L.T - Notice and take action to prevent being too Hungry (H), Angry (A), Lonely (L) and Tired (T) - all states which push us towards a more primitive and impulsive state of mind; which is obviously very dangerous.
Also mindful of whenever I have thoughts of taking a pill to curb anxiety or depression. Yes, some people need medications but, as an addict, especially in early recovery, I avoid any sort of ‘quick fix’. I want my brain to repair itself as naturally as possible.

You’re awesome! And I love the HALT insight! I just added a comment and hunger is the most consistently unpleasant emotional state in early sobriety for me. The meanest SOB I’ve ever met shows up in the mirror. I used to joke about being hangry (when I was a consistent drinker). It’s just not funny now though. It’s kinda terrifying what I start thinking about. A newly unstable brain gets chaotic REAL QUICK. High protein snacks and meals to the rescue! And yes, lots of melatonin at bed time :)

This might sound quite negative, but I've found that the most helpful thing for me has been literally just spending my time alone. Ive been sober for just over 1 month now and most times I even go out now with my friends and am sober, it costs just as much as if I were drinking. Moreover, I've found that most people don't want to be around me or even contact me given I'm no longer drinking. I've needed to cut out most people in my life and spend most of my time alone outside of work. I will likely be able to make some new friends a few years from now who are in different circles, but for the time being, cutting out the people who truly weren't good for me has been the most helpful thing.

What has helped me stay sober for almost 6 months has been improved health, exercise, staying in the moment, Faith, family, picking up an old hobby again (beading), eating better, playing my violin, good supportive friends, finding alternative things to drink (mock tails), reading inspirational things, this channel and a few others for inspiration, improved thinking (memory and cognitive). Thanks Jay

Self-care is super important for me on this alcohol-free journey. I tend to "beat myself up" and be very critical of myself sometimes. Negative self-talk can be a killer! I have to catch myself and remember to be kind to myself, too, I know one popular technique to check my negative self-talk is to ask if I would talk to someone I care about (like a friend, lover, or family member) the way I am talking to myself. Most of the time I would never in a million years talk to someone else the way I talk to myself. So I have to "reset" and take a breath and start over LOL. Take care of yourself everybody, getting sober is freaking hard and we all deserve some love and self-care.

Sobriety is definitely about change, beginning a new life if you will. You have to be willing to get rid of your old habits, what you did before obviously wasn't working if you've decided to quit alcohol. But you will feel much better! I'm 50 days sober now and legitimately happier than i ever was drinking.

I know what you’re saying is spot on. I’m personally terrified to get as far as you because I think I know what I’m going to realize: that I don’t actually like my comfy corporate job nor the city I live in and it’s been long enough that I don’t really know what hobbies speak to me (been getting high or drunk and listening to music with most of my free time the last 11 years). But this just ain’t a life worth living anymore (like Jae says in this video). Eeeeek….

Is a choice, every day.We can’t know the future, it’s impossible to know exactly what will happen, including with alcohol, and each day we have the freedom to turn it down. And the benefits of doing so make that A BIT easier but each day is a new day.

Also I can’t thank you enough for this channel it’s really helped me out, I worked out a lot before I quit drinking but when I gave up this year I decided to do the 75 hard challenge along with it and I’m looking fitter and healthier than I ever have. Things to be mindful of:
      1. Use your body = daily exercise
      2. Have good sleep Hygiene= no phone/tv at least 30 minutes before attempting to sleep
      3. what you're eating before bed or too close to bed
      4. some sleeping pills have adverse affects (example: melatonin ALWAYS wakes me up 3 hours after I fall asleep)
      5. caffeine consumption= experiment with cutting cutting off caffeine 10+ hours before bed. 6 hours after consumption you still have about half of the amount in your body.

10 would take a long time to come up with but here are my big 3:
    1. Cleaning the house. There's always something to do, there's always a pile of unsorted mail, or a drawer, pantry, or closet in your own home that you know can be made tidy. You know which drawer I'm talking about. Get to it. ;)
    2. Exercise/Bike riding.
    3. Writing code.

@@GettingSoberAgain In my humble opinion, the time has come for you, Jae, to give away some stuff that you are not using that has sentimental value.
The sentiment can be captured in a photo of the stuff. You do not need to hold on to the touchable objects forever.
You may want to hold on to all the old DJ equipment but that is not the best thing to do in my opinion.
It's time to pass some unused things on to someone who does not have many things who will use them frequently and love them intensely like you once did.

Well. Here we go again. I'm told one day it will stick. Today 1 February so dry February. Yesterday I watched one of your shorts about preparation. Ok. I hear you. I've prepared before. Written No Thank You on my hand so friends know not to offer. Taken bottles of fizzy juice in my bag. Had NA wine at home just in case ...
    And still failed.
That's ok. I'll do all those and more. Keep trying.
Got pissed last night. I knew I would. Day off = yey. Day drink!
    FFS
Is it ok to just hunker down the first 3 days. Eat sleep, heal. Then venture out.
But I hear the feeling better bit. That's my pitfall. And I get to 3 days and think man! I take drink and drugs to feel this good! All I have to do to feel this good is nothing! Ha!
    So I drink again. Doofus.
    Sigh.
    Doofus.
That's ok. Fresh start. It will stick. You can't unlearn what you're learning on the way darling. We will get there. Keep going (me to the other me)

But I know that. I've learnt say no. What happens in my body? My body says oh thank god for that but my mind says shaddap! Course you can.
      But I know that too.
Rah. Come on girlie. Keep fighting. Sink or swim, what you gonna do?

Great video Jae, I really enjoyed 4 and 10. I am in that early sobriety phase although nearly 100 days sober 🎉 I do feel so much better not drinking and I love telling the truth about my sobriety journey to my friends and colleagues when some say I am not right for not drinking on a night out! 😂

Some people want to keep you in that same old slot that you were in when they first met you. They are surprised and shocked when you start to change for the better.
Sober fun is more quiet and subtle but it lasts longer. Sober friends are the best friends.

    Regarding #3...
Last Friday was my day 16. I met 2 buds at a bar to celebrate their birthday. It was not a challenge whatsoever. Maybe I'm just different/lucky. I've found that being around alcohol is not really a trigger for me. Good thing, considering my roommate keeps alcohol around the house lol.
My triggers are when the realities of my boredom, procrastination, anhedonia, depression and weak stress-management skills, etc., come crashing down on me. I.E., can no longer be ignored.
The last time I was sober this long was 2009. And I've had many failed attempts at quitting in the past 15 years. However, not to sound overly confident, I firmly believe this time is different and I will be successful.
Thanks to sobriety influencers like Jae, I learned the importance of having a solid game plan... A list of "whys" to keep in mind.... A toolbox of skills to cope with cravings/triggers.
Thanks for all you do Jae! It's greatly appreciated by me and countless others. You're changing lives.

Keep it going, you are off to a good start! I have a lot of the same triggers for my cravings: boredom, feeling unwanted, putting shit off, and trying to control things I can't control... be careful hanging out in bars, I will tell you that it did not go well for me. I thought I had it all handled but old habits die hard. Stay clean buddy, keep coming here to see these videos, there are so many great ones that have helped so many of us here.

I was attempting dry January but I had a margarita two times when we went out for dinner. Then I had a really bad day, was alone and bought & drank a bottle of wine. I'm struggling with boredom. I am currently experiencing a severe back problem and have been unable to engage in physical activities for a couple of months. I'm uncertain about the duration of my physical restrictions and I'm so bored!

@@gwillis01Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of people I can talk to about this. However, I'm back on track and on Day 6. Using this page, HabitsV2 and the I am Sober app. are very helpful. I'm feeling strong, getting used to filling my time with reading, etc. I appreciate you caring enough to comment. thank you!
