- How to inspect and replace a FSI HPFP and Cam Follower on a MK5 GTI. The high pressure fuel pump and cam follower is a common MK5 FSI failure. Checking the cam follower is basically maintenance. Also failure can cause check engine light codes P0087, P1093, P2293. Today I will show you step by step how to DIY the FSI fuel pump and cam follower. Thanks to FCP EURO and Meyle for sponsoring the MK5 Rusto-Mod project.

This might be one of the common mk5 repairs in history.
Any chance you can do a transmission change video? LoL :-P
Checking and replacing the follower and replacing the timing belt were the first things I did when I bought my 8P S3, just a no brainer and peace of mind 👍
HumbleMechanic did you consider doing the stud conversion? I also had to replace the rubber hose. It had degraded on the inside over time and was causing the car to go into limp mode under load..
I've just fitted this kit to avoid worrying about this potential problem anymore. I'm running a TTE420 will all supporting mods as well:

Yeah, I bought a 2008 gti not knowing about the follower and now got to Chang my fuel pump and camshaft.
I love the detail you give including the torque specs. Great video.
Thanks so much
Thankfully these high pressure fuel systems are not as complex as some others. Key word is maintenance as usual. Charles, you are the man when it comes to these repairs. Thank you.
Would you reccomend these engine long term?
Manuel RVS Yup. Especially the earlier FSI 2.0T in my opinion. We have a 2008 Passat and we just absolutely love that car and I have done just basic maintenance and small issue repairs over the course of its life. I do my own belt changes, metal impeller water pump, reseal vacuum pump, check follower once a while and some upgraded ignition parts and it purrs like a kitten. It’s 11 years old at this point and I am planning on keeping it for at least another 5-7 years because no one even offers a good wagon hardly anymore that is affordable and fun to drive. Perhaps a Mercedes wagon next. And I will never buy a Subaru wagon, sorry Subaru.
I used your other video to change out my lpfp and the revised control module WITH the coveted heat sink.. (what a concept!)
DAP had the parts for unbelievably cheap. Runs good as new and no more unhappy fuel cutoffs.
The community you guys built here is great, keep up the good work
Thank you so much 💙
AWESOME ! Thank you for saving me $195 from the local Stealership. Very precise with lots of details. Keep those videos coming Dude.
How do you turn it to get the flat side? Crank engine over? Great videos I have learned so much from you. Thank yiu
😭😭😭😭 wish I watched this proper the first time, changed my follower years ago and putting the nut on the hard fuel line I stripped the threads and trying to get one is impossible ended up buying a second hand hpfp just for the fitting, never new about or thought about turning the engine to get a flat point on the cam your a legend mate wish you lived next door to me 👍
“ this one’s pretty broken so it came off nice and easy” I think that’s about the best you can hope for as a Volkswagen mechanic😭
Hahah
You should do a sagging headliner diy
Right lol more like any interior cloth with adhesives
Always a fun job to do. I never thought about the follower being a maintenance item but good call.
Yeah it makes sense to just keep an eye on it. Way cheaper to replace the follower than the cam
I don’t trust those followers, they’re a rough bunch. They already know they gonna get inspected. Them and their up to no good cam buddies they ride with.
HumbleMechanic
I don’t have one, but would it help any to polish the weewee out of the face of the (new) follower?
With regards to the question about rotating the engine to get the cam in the right position, next time you do one of these, can you please update the video with a little clip to show exactly how you rotate the engine. Great information, but would be nice to see exactly how you do it!
"19mm socket above the alternator. Always turn clockwise."
Cheers!
how did u do it
That exact sensor has failed on my Mk5 GTI in the winter of 2016. After a search on eBay I found out that I had, as mentioned in the video, the old revision, with E, and I ordered the one with K from America, because somehow, no ebay vendors here in Europe had the part. Took 2 weeks to get here, but my engine ran again.
I have a mk5 Jetta FSI 2.0T and i'm about this do my first ever HPFP and cam follower replacement. thanks fot he tips!
The best explanation and procedure I've seen on doing this job. Bravo.
Thanks so much
Thanks Charles, Two clicks of the calibrated elbow. Best torque wrench when next to impossible to use a torque wrench.
NICE! HAHAHHA
AWESOME instructions, Charles,,as ever, Thank you so much for your kind effort,,,please keep posting,,,🙂👍
Thank you for explaining the lobe cam setting.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and time with us. I really enjoy these videos you produce.
Fun to watch as always, Charles. Good stuff. 😎
I just did this like 1k miles ago, I did not have the banjo bolt. I bought my b6 Passat at 93k and replaced the follower at 140k the cam follower really wasn't bad for the mileage on it. I really didn't see it as a maintenance item but now it's gonna be changed at 160k or close to it.
Just replaced mine, it all went smooth and easy! Thanks!
Awesome
How did you rotate the engine to get the lobe flat?
I replaced mine at 127k miles. It was never replaced before. Cam follower looked really good with very slight wear, that was almost unnoticeable.
WOW that is rare
HumbleMechanic I was really surprised. Maybe because some older lady drove it. Car haven't seen certified service since it had 40k miles. Only service she did was to change oil every 5k miles.
Its pleasure to watch. Thanks.
Just replaced the HPFP/Cam Follower on my Fahrenheit GTI(Seen you just got one recently, nice 🤘) tonight with the help of this vid. Much appreciated brother! Didnt realize I had to buy a thrust sensor seperately till I got to that point in the video. HPFP was factory original, I can't reuse the original sensor on a newer Pump right? Gotta be an updated sensor?
Love this Mk5 series. I have a Mk5 gli with 170k miles and I'm about to do most of these replacements soon and I'll be referring to your videos. Also, are you goi g to be doing a timing belt/water pump replacement video? That's the only repair I'm a little worried about doing on my own.
Thanks!
Great videos, as always. Question, does the cam follower need to be inspected / replaced on a MK6 GTI?
I don't think so, I believe the follower issue was mostly prevalent on the early fsi engines
Nice video, like always. Off the topic question, now when you are not employed in dealership who do you spend time?
Fixing cars on side or just making videos?
Very detailed and good quality video. I am definitely a subscriber now!
The only thing missing in this video is "boats and...". Great tutorial.
Great video as always Charles!
How do u rotate the cam ? To make sure it’s on flat surface
Hope after 2 years you figured out you can turn the crank
I disconnected the high flow fuel pump like you did in the video at the 3:00 minute mark but my car did not start after that
For anybody else looking here, the torque wrench extension Charles refers to when tightening things back up is called a crow's foot (or crowfoot). A crow's foot would also work with the thrust sensor.
And here I thought he was doing a collab with visio racer... Good info contained within nontheless
Nice video love the mk5 series
Hopefully you didn't disturb the spider living in the engine bay XD
I had a good amount of wild life on this project. Some skinks, lot of spiders, a few ticks... YUCK
Boy she’s rough. Glad to see she’s getting some much overdue love. Great car for you brother.
I have to do it every 10k on my tuned FSI. A little annoying but sure beats a new camshaft and company
Motternator ha mines tuned and I haven't changed mine in 48k
@@heavenlyhatch6219 Give that man a ciiiiiiiiiigarrrrrr
Haha thanks
Wow this video is very informative!Thank you!
I recently read on the Pelican parts website that you should set cylinder 1 to top dead center in order to do this job. I didn't do it the first time my cam follower was replaced and everything has been fine. Just wondering what your thoughts on this are?
Edit* where are my manners lol. This is a great video by the way, I love watching your videos, they are very informative and well put together, keep up the great work!
I’m not sure about TDI 1. For me as long as the lobe isn’t pointing out like in the thumbnail it’s fine.
This is a bigger issue on the TSI ENGINES. I’ve seen plenty of broken pumps immediately after install
Your videos are detailed and very helpful.how did you rotate the cam to the flat?
How are you rotating the engine while inspecting the cam lobes?
Keir Briscoe turning from crank pulley
For 2 years my 07 passat it’s been having what you just did on this video low fuel pressure sensor
Thanks for posting
Nice video. 👍 Does all FSI engines have this cam follower and how often should it be changed? I have a 2004 Golf 1,6 FSI.
Hi Charles,
Big fan. Here's a question for ya regarding my 08 golf gti mk5 hard start issue.
1. Car is parked indoors. First start in the morning, no problem.
2. When driven and parked under hot sun(hot weather), many cranks before it finally starts. The hotter the weather, the harder to start.
3. After the hard start, driven a little bit and parked for an hour or two, hard start returns.
Do you know what could be the issue? Lpfp had been replaced. Starter relay been replaced. Lpfp primes. It's been frustrating both for me and my neighbourhood mechanic. Your opinions is very much needed. Thank you very much for your time.
oh man i saw this one video, he recommended having a fire extinguisher lol smh i never thought about it lul
Why not use the Schraeder valve to bleed off high pressure fuel? That is what it is there for.
100% this! No need to crank the engine over at 2:52
Thanks for the video, replaced mine but now get code p0010. I can clear it when driving but at start up the code come back
Hi!How do you position the cam?How do you adjust it?You said rotate the engine.just saw that it’s rotating but I don’t know how did you rotate it.Thanks for answering!
Usually by rotating the crankshaft clockwise
Great video thank you.
great video. cool hot wheel collection
Instead of letting it run to bleed off the pressure, why not simply bleed it off by pushing in the middle of the schrader valve with taking off the dust cap ?
Exactly. the valve is there for that exact reason
Nice and interesting video.
For the follower the oil should be the best and also oil the spring and sealing with fresh oil.
If you buy our hogh pressure fuel pumps, they are torqued corrctly everywhere, so please don´t clamp them in a vice.
There's no point in pre oiling any parts. As soon as you turn the car on oil is going to get in there anyway. I oil the cam follower just because it's easier to put in.
Hello, very helpful video. I have a 2007 VW GTI FSI i have a HPFP internals to the FPP and i came across my cam follower having a hole and im having boost cut outs randomly, i am getting the p0087 and p2293 codes as well, pretty sure my thrust senor is bad but also wanted to know what bigger repair you where talking about if the cam follower has a hole.
Thanks mate great video
Love your videos
Is there anyway to replace the fuel pressure regulator sensor on the pump or does it come as 1 unit?
I have a 2007 VW 2.0 Turbo. I was told the fuel pump tappet cam follower was worn. We were a 200 mile trip, and started hearing a weird whining sound. Also when the oil was drained it was very thin and had metal flakes in it. What do you think? Thank You. Scott.
Awesome video Charles.
I need to replace the Thrust sensor only as the black little nipple on the sensor broke off. Do I still need to relieve the fuel pressure or is it just a take off and put back on type deal ?
Cheers
Yep, you will still get HP fuel out of the thrust sensor
3:44 you were not joking about those parts breaking! I replaced my cam follower and the hose going into the vacuum pump cracked. Then when I went to replace the hose that cracked I bumped the coolant distribution pipe and that broke, coolant went squirting everywhere :(
A buddy that’s a Honda tech called me Friday same thing happened to him
thank you very much, you help more thanks
Congratulations on the attention this movie has a good explanation thanks humble
My cam follower was worn all the way through on mine. The cam does not look damaged but the fuel pump stud was a little worn. I went ahead and just replaced the follower and it seems to run fine. I didn't have any CELs or issues beforehand and it seems to run fine now. Do you think it actually still needs a new HPFP?
I asked this myself but I installed a new cam follower and works good
I had the same issue after previous owner didn't keep on top of this. 3 years later, can you remember did the car keep running good? Thanks
Just replaced my cam follower… it was trashed!! A hole so large it was working it’s way through the sides of the follower and also wore big grooves in the cam lobe as well! 😣
yep time for an intake cam
The same longitudinal engines in Audi models. A stubby 17mm is needed get at the hard line on the bottom of the hpfp.
No it's not, very tight be done with a regular spanner
Have a 2007 that will start and run for a few seconds before stopping. After that it will turn over but not restart. If you let it set for awhile same thing again. I am getting a P0087 code.
this is a common place for that code to be the issues.
Does the fuel regulator sit on top of the pump?
Can that be unscrewed and cleaned or replaced, keeping the old fuel pump?
So what do you do when you pull out your cam follower and it's a nice hole in it? Besides replacing the cam follower?
2007 jetta GLI 160k. Have code P0171. I’ve smoked tested and have no leaks. Replaced all pcv components. Minus the valve cover. I’m stumped.
Where can i get one of those orange vw badges in the background by your hot wheels for my fahrenheit?
Hi sir I'll got problem my ask regarding Audi A3 Can't fund regulator pressure part them, n has read scanner is mist fire D cylinder 2 or 3 plus, given reading but the main read is regulator ?
Humble,
I have this same motor and it is clattering like it has a cam chain flopping around in the housing . I have read it is common to make clatter under a few different parts failing. I just watched this video and pulled the follower it looks very clean and well kept I was wondering what else could be making this noise on this type of motor I am not really interested in chasing parts and replacing them if i can find an experienced vet to help in the diagnosis process
Sounds like it's a faulty timing chain tensioner on the back or right side of the engine. The tensioner is known to fail and cause a rattling noise, with catastrophic engine failure if not fixed in time.
I kno this is kinda off topic charles but have you seen the scoda Octavia on the car throttle channel, its the 1.9 diesel
How did you rotate the cam so the flat part came out?
My HPFP doesn't have a schrieder valve on the front, is this a problem? I have a 2005 golf gti
Woww Exelent Video. 😃👍🚘
Is this a common problem on the Audi A4 2.0 BUL engine as well? I read that they changed some parts, like the camlobe, which stopped this problem?
Thank you.
after you turned the cam,do you rotate the engine on timing point, or start engine from that point?
Hello, When appears these codes, what happen with the engine? does not start? Does it lose power? Or rpm? And how is your driving, does it make the acceleration slow? Best regards.
Hi @humbleMechanic have u tried checking your mk7 golf r hpfp? Does our engines have cam follower too? If so please reply thanks love you videos
Watche this video because I liked your Energey, made me feel like I could do this and I don’t even own the car or work on cars. I just race them. No one does videos on my car. 2013 650i gran coupe. If you got someone that does cover my car with DIYS let me know please!!!!!
Sadly I am no help there.
Hey man. My pump was leaking oil where it joins the engine. I removed it, replaced the cam follower, rubber seal and the 3 bolts, and it keeps leaking. Any suggestions?
I wish the important questions got answered. mine is the metal gasket.
Nice video man. Do you know if this will be the same way to do it on 2013 chevy malibu. I meed to do the high pressure fuel pump
That I don’t know. May be similar
Hi. I am interesed to find an camshaft follower for wv.Touran 1,6 FSI 2004. Can you please give an link with the compatibile part? Thank you.
great video ty
Thank u sir very nice video
Hi charles, I need to replace my hpfp as the bottom hard line brass fitting is damaged and I don’t think you buy it separately. The problem is all the hpfps I can find have the newer style bamboo fitting and not the older banjo bolt like mine. Can you swap this part over from the old pump to make it work? I don’t honestly know what to do to get it working again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Your channel is awesome
I sure could have used your vw expertise today...01 golf leaking coolant from the outlet and upper radiator hose....now its overheating. Tstat opens .i suspect the water pump impeller....ugg...were is Charles when i need him😁
Oh no!
HumbleMechanic one of the few times i wish i went on to be a fighter pilot...ugg
Charles have you ever made a video about the FSI pcv going bad? Seems to also be a common issue with these cars (mine is bad i think 🙄)
Maybe a LONG time ago. It’s so common. Lol
I seem to have around thrust plug part you mentioned traces of oil and also around the bottom of the fuel pump where the pipes are is the a bad O ring?
Previous owners had somewhat neglected follower changes on our EOS BPY engine, and there is a new (ish) fuel pump on the engine, but the follower of the same vintage is starting to show some wear and the cam surface shows some wear also. How much wear on the cam fuel pump lobes will fall in the "worn, but acceptable to still operate" zone with follower inspections with each oil change? Based on the pictures of damaged cams I have seen, this appears to be somewhere in the marginally operational (vs obviously fubar) zone.
Will this pump or low pressure fuel sensor ever cause a P0172 with reduced power and high fuel consumption?
I have 2 questions: This is the same HPFP of 2010 Audi A5 2.0T Quattro? The torque specs in the audi are the same?
Just got golf 5 2.0 fsi today 😂 damn I've checked almost everything
I watched several of your videos. It would be great to have a checklist video that gives the top 10 preventive things to check. 2006 Passat 2.0T FSI 131k miles with all original parts. It is on borrowed time and I want to to every preventive thing I could. It seems 1) timing belt 2) water pump 3) cam follower 4) serpentine belt 5) belt tensioner 6) timing chain tensioner (?) but I do not have the whole list or the order.
That is a REALLY GREAT IDEA!!! Thank you. Hell I like that so much I might do it for this week HAHA
Is FUEL smell in oil normal at CDHB TFSI engine? Should I change this as preventative maintenance? There is no fauly code but fuel smell at oil and high oil consumption. Need your urgent help.
If there was no pressure left in the system, and the cam follower smells like gas, should I replace the HPFP?
Great video. Should the cam be in the wrong position, do you turn the crankshaft bolt clockwise with a socket?
Clockwise. Almost every engine rotates clockwise and you should (almost) always turn it clockwise
@@HumbleMechanic the only engine to turn counterclockwise I know so far,is my 1962 cub cadet garden tractor with kohler engine...lol
