She’s totally a miscast. I don’t doubt her voice is powerful, it’s just that it doesn’t feel natural. Feels like it’s forced and trying hard to be a janis, i’m still seeing her as aulii on screen
Despite some issues with the movie, Renee Rapp's performance was by far the best part of the movie. Now that I've seen both Mean Girls movies, I can happily enjoy both different take on the character
It’s really not, objectively on its own it’s really good. It feels like the original at times with a new twist. The main issue i have with this version is not that it’s a bad movie per se-cuz the cornerstone that it was built upon has always been very strong-but the fact that this iteration felt like it didnt understand the whole point of the original. I definitely recommend listening to the broadway soundtrack, the lyricism is still bad but the instrumentals and vocals are so much more heightened and cinematic.
Ironic that you guys felt the songs were similar because the songs on broadway were quite varied and thematic--all regina's songs are james bond, damians are vaudeville, cadys are upbeat with huge melodic intervals and often African-ish percusion, Gretchen is broadway faux operatic, janis is catchy broadway) SNL musical director Jeff Richmond is a chameleon writing all the songs in different genres for 30 Rock and Kimmy Schmidt, for instance, but the decision was made here to make it all "radio music" so contemporary kids would like it. A poor choice. (Also, a lot was cut or re-written to work around Rice's limitations)
I think part of this is also the songs that were cut from the Broadway version into this movie. For example they mentioned there not being a classic Jazz/tap song in this, which is 'Where Do You Belong' and 'Stop' in the stage show.

This movie is 10000000% HARD CARRIED BY RENEE RAPP!!! Ring that mf bell for Tara Erickson! Honestly I like this movie way more than I expected cuz I went in without any positive expectations. So I found myself enjoying it. Janice in this is Miami which is me and my daughters favorite Disney “princess” 💖💖
I enjoy this movie and the stage musical, but does anyone else think that they kinda glorify Janis’ behavior and ignore the part she played in Cady becoming mean? I know that Janis and Damien aren’t on the same level as Regina, but I think it’s important to point out that they are the reason why Cady got closer to Regina in the first place. Cady kept wanting to stop and they kept pushing her to go back until they were satisfied. They even forced her into emotionally manipulating Gretchen despite Cady saying “no, she’s too fragile”. They go out of their way to call her “Catty” even though she outright told them not to call her that, which isn’t even something that Regina or the Plastics do. “Rather Be Me” is a great and powerful song about embracing yourself and not letting others define you, and it’s great. But, it feels a bit hypocritical and weird coming right off of her proudly NOT apologizing for manipulating and ruining Regina’s life. I get that Regina did that to her first, but this story is a self-proclaimed “cautionary tale” about the cycle of meanness and how mean girls create new mean girls, but that sentiment really only is being applied to Regina and Cady. The musical seemingly doesn’t consider Janis as part of this “mean girl” cycle but I thought she clearly was.
Yeah that's one of my big problem with the movie. It was great but I think they completely miss the point of Janis, which was that she was similar to Regina in how she approaches Cady, it was never really to be nice. The stage musical also has a bit of this problem but I think the "I'd rather be me" scene kinda showed the hypocrisy by having her loving the attention, and the fact that having the other girls clapping makes her continue the song. It shows that she actually rather be with them. In the movie she is just shown as a free spirit and the hypocrisy is missing. They make her the good guy when the point was that there were no good guys.
While I don’t agree it’s better than the other renditions of Mean Girls (except 2. We don’t talk about 2), it’s a fun time if you’re not going in with expectations (and know it’s a musical). I’m glad you guys enjoyed it so much
Man it’s like the stars are in alignment becos I just watched this last nite for the first time !! I really appreciated hearing your guys’ reactions to this movie becos of all the hate and negativity this movie has been getting is really sad. It’s actually quite a great looking film and the cinematography is on fleek (do people still say that?) just like John points out
I honestly can't decide if I hate this movie or think it's just okay. I think I'm leaning towards just okay. There are a lot of things I don't like and some things I do like and things I'm okay with and a few things I think just could have been better. Definitely not a rewatch movie for me
I had a good time with this movie I even quote every line and I think all of us are gay for Regina George in this reboot also I kinda ship Regina and Cady more than I do with her and Aaron love me a good friends to enemies to lovers story
I enjoyed this movie as well! I watched it with the mindset that it was an alternate universe of the original mean girls. Seeing what changes they did to the characters was interesting. My gripes maybe were just some songs weren't portrayed fun enough or in a creative enough way and also the school seemed so tiny it was giving me claustrophobia (exaggeration).
Can we just have a moment of silence for the songs that didn't make it into this version from the stage show ('Where Do You Belong', 'More Is Better', 'Fearless', 'Stop' etc.) I think that would've helped especially regarding the point you made about the songs all seeming like they're in the same genre. It's always a struggle with these musical/movie adaptations to get the pacing right whilst honouring the stage show enough - reminds me of the Dear Evan Hansen movie not having the best song from that soundtrack (in my opinion), 'Anybody Got A Map?'.
I prefer how the burn book is handled in the OG film, I do think it's smart not to make a joke about a teacher hooking up with adolescents, that's a smart cut HOWEVER, one of the biggest reasons the Burn Book was taken seriously originally WAS because it was proven that the couch was in fact doing stuff he should not with two teenager girls, so it made sense for the police to look into the other causation for the teacher accused of being a drug dealer. In this movie, only one teacher was targetted, so it make sno sense for her to almost lost her job out of it. A full investigation out of a picture and gossips from a book clearly made by bored girls? Makes no sense in this context. They should have found another way, something that could put another teacher into a scandal situation too, I dunno, maybe gossiping about a male teacher that only gives high grades to students that are hot, or something weird, that when checking the grades, it makes sense? I KNEW teachers that did that by the way, asking the students to turn around and grading them by how their asses would look. Guy lost his job of course.
I'd love to see you guys react to more movie musicals One of my faves is Tick Tick...BOOM! Stars Andrew Garfield who I think should have won all the awards for playing Jonathan Larson also directed by Lin Manuel Miranda. Mamma Mia 1&2, In The Heights, Enchanted, The Muppets(2011), The Sapphires, Matilda(2022), Dreamgirls, Little Shop Of Horrors, Rocketman are some recommendations.
I couldn’t get into this. I was annoyed with the fact that the supporting cast was full of amazing vocalists yet the girl in the lead couldn’t sing. I mean she wasn’t tone deaf but it was like listening to a girl just sing along with the radio. Maybe there was some reason they chose to go that way but it annoyed me so much I couldn’t watch more than 15 mins.

THIS DUO THO FAMMMMMMMM
While I don’t agree it’s better than the other renditions of Mean Girls (except 2. We don’t talk about 2), it’s a fun time if you’re not going in with expectations (and know it’s a musical). I’m glad you guys enjoyed it so much
I saw this movie on a plane and did not like it initially. But after watching it with you two, I kind of like it.
Man it’s like the stars are in alignment becos I just watched this last nite for the first time !!
I really appreciated hearing your guys’ reactions to this movie becos of all the hate and negativity this movie has been getting is really sad. It’s actually quite a great looking film and the cinematography is on fleek (do people still say that?) just like John points out
yesss this movie is so fun! glad you guys enjoyed
I love, love, love the decorations for the Halloween Party. ❤
really enjoyed your reactions
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO LIKES THIS MOVIE OML
I honestly can't decide if I hate this movie or think it's just okay. I think I'm leaning towards just okay. There are a lot of things I don't like and some things I do like and things I'm okay with and a few things I think just could have been better. Definitely not a rewatch movie for me
I loved everything but Cady’s performance :(
The only movie ik Busy Phillips from is White Chicks
I had a good time with this movie I even quote every line and I think all of us are gay for Regina George in this reboot also I kinda ship Regina and Cady more than I do with her and Aaron love me a good friends to enemies to lovers story
Welcome back tara
Mean Girls Cast John And Tara From Reel Rejects
I enjoyed this movie as well! I watched it with the mindset that it was an alternate universe of the original mean girls. Seeing what changes they did to the characters was interesting.
My gripes maybe were just some songs weren't portrayed fun enough or in a creative enough way and also the school seemed so tiny it was giving me claustrophobia (exaggeration).
The Damian and Janis of The Reject Nation
Can we just have a moment of silence for the songs that didn't make it into this version from the stage show ('Where Do You Belong', 'More Is Better', 'Fearless', 'Stop' etc.) I think that would've helped especially regarding the point you made about the songs all seeming like they're in the same genre.
It's always a struggle with these musical/movie adaptations to get the pacing right whilst honouring the stage show enough - reminds me of the Dear Evan Hansen movie not having the best song from that soundtrack (in my opinion), 'Anybody Got A Map?'.
Reneé Rapp was Regina on Broadway
If you want mean girls with murder just watch Heathers! 🤣
I need a Lisa Frankenstein reaction please!
Doesn’t matter who the duo is but y’all need to watch this movie called wild things
The fact that the original Regina George would bully the new Regina George so hard, and not be intimidated by her is so funny...
She would have ruined her life, musical Regina would have gotten therapy and move to a new school
Well, Regina from the movie was just a plain bitch.
Regina from the musical is a manipulative bitch
This is an interesting take to me because imo renee is 10x more intimidating than rachel macadams was
Renee Rapp is not getting bullied by anybody 💀

Missed opportunity of uploading this reaction on a Wednesday 👚
Are we gonna get a reaction to The Crow (1994) before the remake comes out?
The original Broadway stage musical overall is better, but they did a great job making the adaptation to the big screen.
Not as good as The Original but still has it's moments with the musical numbers and Renee brought it.
the way her name still isnt Catty yet every reactor ive watched says it makes me giggle so fkin hard
I find it weird how they mention seeing the original movie and then act surprised at everything that was a in it.
Busy was the mean girl in Freaks and Geeks!
I'd love to see you guys react to more movie musicals
One of my faves is Tick Tick...BOOM!
Do you know Top Secret? An old spoof film which also doubles as a musical. Highly recommended!
It is not quite as fetch as the original film but it is SO DAMN CUTE
I saw this movie like 6 times in theaters (I have the pass don’t worry 😭) because it was so FUN
