- The Space Shuttle Discovery, mounted atop a modified 747 jet, flew over the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on April 17, 2012 on its way to its permanent home at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va.
NASA's donation of the shuttle was recognized and celebrated during a special ceremony that followed its flight, landing, demating and towing.

It's hard not to tear up when you see this amazing piece of engineering in person. Makes me immensely proud of my country and its achievements.
+Chris Harloe I am from the UK, and all of you in America have every right to feel proud of such an amazing piece of engineering, along with the commitment your country has given to the exploration of space. Whenever i think of space, i think of the USA, i am just about old enough to remember the moon landings, and was just leaving school when Columbia first flew with John Young and Bob Crippen, fantastic vehicle, i think it's going to be a long time before we see anything like it again. I would love to come over and see one of the shuttle for myself one day.
And then you realize that you just voted Donald Trump as your president, and you realize that your country will never be that great again.
I attended the arrival at Dulles and the delivery at the museum two days later. I can tell you, first hand, that it was one of the best weeks of my life. Having the 747 fly over us at 500 feet, seeing Discovery's wing pass over my head when they rolled her to the ceremony and even contributing to this video (the timelapse of her rolling into the museum at the end is mine), all made for an incredibly memorable experience. I'll never forget it.
Darth Sidious your an idiot
Darth Sidious I wondered when a moron would bring politics into it.
This legitimately made me cry.
its insane how an airplane can literally get off the ground with a damn space shuttle on top
The airplane is modified so it can be held on its back
Sad no more 747s are going to be made the final one was delivered today.
Yet I have a weight limit on my small suit case.
Oh Boy, watching Shuttlevideos is never getting boring
She's even more beautiful in person. Would have loved to see her launch for the last time in space.
that opera singer really sings just terrible...
very cool vid though
Thijmen Schout as soon as she started singing I was dieing of laughter I wonder y they didn't let her finish lol
The star strangled bannaner is a toughie
Even though I’m Canadian, and I totally respect the American anthem, I had to hold in my laughter, it was literally so bad 😂
It's like seeing the retirement party of an old friend.
Where abouts is Atlantis located? They could have done without the opera singer
Atlantas is located at Kennedy space center
William Miller okay thank you
The pilot in that 747: don't fuck up, don't fuck up, don't fuck up....
I was at school when this flew over. My teacher let us stand outside and watch it.
it was 52 years ago so your are like 62 or something or 70 ???? well if you are a kid its fake but if you are a adult i might belive you this happend whene my dad was like 2 dude
It was 7 years ago dude, stop lying.
It's really humbling to get to see this in person. To see the machine that made history, dozens of times over.
It's finally good to see how that thing was brought to that musum but I was concerned about that thing at thruster I'm confused if that got took off
My brother-in-law and I were there for the ceremony. We rode our motorcycles from Pittsburgh. It was a great ending for the most interesting nine years of my life, nine years that began on February 1st, 2003. Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor..,we made a great team. Thank you for your service.
The best moment I have ever shared with my son was our first visit to the Air and Space Museum this past July. I have seen a hundred images and built multiple models of the shuttle, some which actually flew but until you see it in person you will never truly understand how magnificent it was.
Chaps my ass that we (Houston) didn't get one.. I understand the Smithsonian getting one.. and KSC.. and even California since it was built there.. but why New York?? Houston had more to do with the program than anyone.. New York had dick-all to do with it.. and most there don't care anyway.. We should have get a Shuttle that flew in space, and Enterprise gone to Cali.. And what's with NASA signing over ownership.. Why not just display them in the museums but retain ownership?? After all it's as asset that was funded by our tax dollars.. so we give them away and then have to pay to see them?? not right..
I love this vid!!
'
american jumbo 747 plane and space shuttle are the best so beautifully planes...
keep up going service to ISS
take good care of her Smithsonian. Discovery is 36 years old and has a lot of missions under her belt take good care of the leader of the NASA Fleet.
ROGER ROLL DISCOVERY.........AWESOME.......♥
More like, "Discovery, wheel stop..."
Bye bye enterprise
On a trip to Washington, D.C., I was in 8th grade, so very long ago, it was a fortunate part of our trip to be able to visit the Air and Space Musuem... God Bless You, and Happy New year!
Great event. Science is wonderful and amazing. Welcome Discovery.
Ronald Jenkees Music! WOO. I love that guy, and miss him.
There is something you don't see everyday...
I know they won't....but could they bring the shuttles back , like they did with the Iowa Class Battleships in the 70's & 80's ?
I was there that day! I’ve got some pictures somewhere - probably on an old iPhone 5 😂
Who remembers watching these videos as a kid. My heart broke when the date said 8 years ago
Welcome. Home. My. Friends. The. Space. Shuttle. Discovery. Now. In. Va
I. Love. Watching. This. On TV. It's. Great. Flight. Toward. To. Space. 😀🚀
Thank. You. And. God. Bless. You. With. Love. And. Peace. ❤
In real life this is huge but compared to a 747 it’s tiny
I bought a white and black 2002 honda accord on the day of the final shuttle launch period. I immediately had the windows tinted pitch black, so the car DID remind me of an orbiter. Being a fan of space exploration, I had no choice but to name the car Acceed in honor of all 6 transports: Atlantis, Challenger, Columbia, Endeavor, Enterprise, and Discovery. I was aiming to ad the cars name to a mirror plated vanity tag if I could find someone to cut the tag for me when I suddenly thought that the name Acceed resembled the cars actual make model name "Accord." I figured people would think I was some idiot who didn't know how to spell Accord. LoL
love it dude you are a shuttle nut like me
jupitorman oh yeah man. I hate that they ended them. Did u see where theyre possibly gonna make the next orbiter look a lot like the old apollo orbiters? I think thats stupid going a step back.
Dee Ray yep plopping back in to the sea boring
Dee Ray
Well, the shuttle was never made for long range flights. Being much lighter than a Shuttle, an Apollo type craft could reach longer ranges with less fuel requirements.
Although i am pissed, the Colombia should have been the one in the Smithsonian, given it was the first shuttle to actually launch. Sadly it didn't make it =( The should have retired the Columbia long ago.
I like that. Acceed. I never would have thought of that.
Eu achei uma medalia sobre first flight- august 30, 1984 space shuttle Discovery
In 2013 i was in 5th grade and I had a chance to go see the space shuttle and the smithsonian museums but I never got the chance to see the shuttle cause my flight was delayed for 7 hours so I missed my chance to see it but I still enjoyed the national air and space museum and all the other museums. If and when I have enough money I will go back to Washington D.C. To see what I missed.
The space shuttle discovery was the one that saved the space shuttle missions in September 29,1988 after the challenger incident.
And July 26, 2005 after Columbia
They used a Ronald Jenkees track! That's awesome!
NO music
No one is talking about the 747 that had to do all the hard work
There is something so cool seeing both the Discovery and the Enterprise just come face to face with each other, like the older spacecraft meeting the next retired spacecraft after its journey has ended
Whoa, John Glen signed it.
I'm going to see it this week. I'm so excited!
#BRINGBACKTHESHUTTLE
I am sorry, tears are welling .. great nation
Magnífico aparato!!!
T-38 chase plane ??
Discovery shows what we can do and what we are going to do and i know i know Smithsonians we take care of it thank you nasa we are with you nasa.......and thank you Discovery
We gotta respect the 747 now too because its coming out of service and it can still bench and aircraft carrier
FANTÁSTICO ESSES UNIBUS ESPACIAIS.
Should’ve been Columbia
What is the song starting at 1:50
Angelo Giordano - Everyone
i saw Discovery over my school in Herndon VA 3 school years ago so much memoys
Awesome!... salute from down under 🇳🇿👍
Jenk’s music! Nice
Oh by the way, my dad worked at JSC and landed Apollo 11 and many friends I went to school with worked hands on the shuttles. We left Houston for NJ in 1970 and no one up there cared about any launches!
Does anyone else find it odd after we land on the moon, we just orbit the earth for 30 yrs...LOL...really a joke!
dirgesinthedark7 if you can say that you hands on the shuttle then make that moronic statement I doubt you did anything remotely involved with NASA. Fetch coffee maybe.
3:16 it looks like the black dude has a blonde toupè 😂😂😂
u lose 1 NASA
COLOMBIA🇨🇴
GOD Bless and keep America.
Hi I'm Phil

Angelo giordano-everyone
Отлетались! Пенсия!
What is the speech background music starting at 1:50? But seriously I have been trying to find that music for a YEAR AND I CANT FIND IT SO PLEASE HELP ME!!!
freedom...
Enterprise never launched 😂😂😂
Enterprise wasn't capable of space flight, it was made to test the shuttles flight capabilities in the atmosphere
I was surprised to learn that making Enterprise space-capable would have been more expensive than using a bunch of long-paid-for spare parts in building a whole new spaceworthy craft.
This is so amazing.
Elon, make space THIS great again.
this town should not have got discoverly. texas and florida did all the hard work and noone else like new york or washington should have not gotten this craft. they had nothing to do with our space program.
As a Texan, I'm proud that Discovery is in the Smithsonian. She's the flagship of the shuttle fleet so her rightful place is in our nation's capital. Florida proudly displays Atlantis in a phenomenal exhibit, which is the best of the four, in my opinion. We Houstonians would have loved to display one, but we have the 747 seen in the video with a full-scale mockup sitting atop her fuselage. In the end, we all won :)
Had to leave because of the dire musis
