so i just bought this cam tonight and went for a ride. still was indecisive about keeping it until i saw this video. this is amazing! you're hilarious, great review and im definitely subscribing and I'm keeping the cam, so thanks and keep filming! 👍😉
I just plain old don't like it at all. I completely agree that it's personal preference, and here is mine - I watch these videos for two reasons, number one is to see my friends and hear what they have to say and be entertained. Number two is to feel like I'm along for their ride. Sounds strange, but I can suspend belief (film term) and really feel like I'm riding. The steady shot kills that feeling. You don't get the bumps and jarring motion of the terrain you are tackling. It's moto vlogging, we ride up rocks and gnarly trails and get smashed around! Isn't that why we love it? The steady shot take all of that way and even worse lowers the image quality giving that cross fade effect. eveRide, you know I love your videos brother and I'll continue to "float" though them as long as you keep making them, but that respectfully is my opinion.
ColoradoDualSport I full-on get that. Somebody needs to create a happy medium between the sea-sick feeling I get from juttery footage and the "floaty" feeling of the steadyshot. When I ride, my eyes aren't really bouncing all over around my head, they're still and focused on the line. To me, the steady shot looks more real. I like what tbjimcollins said earlier... steadyshot for follow shots and "scenic" stuff... but turn it off for the action goodness.
Could not agree more colorado. Some of the footage of the steady shot you have to wonder if it is a mavic or other drone the footage is so smooth and disconnected. Not how it looks when i go bouncing up a hill. lol
I would say this is the best comparison I've seen! One down side to the SteadyShot is if you have a side mount with any part of the mounting surface in the shot (helmet/motorcycle fairing) then the mounting surface bounces ALL AROUND the video. With it out of frame, it looks GREAT!
RCFlyBoy314 Yessss! I'm not sure if it's posted yet (I scheduled a few during my adventure) but in a video I uploaded recently it shows the difference between having the cam on the side of the helmet versus the front.
great comparison between the two modes! one thing that i notice with the steadshot (with the camera pointed forward more than the head shot in this video) that everything more (especially the tall grass and bushes) than 10-15 feed in front of the bike feels a little blurry, even when viewing in higher quality (still blurry in 720p & 1080p). if you ever get the chance, a side by side of both cameras pointing forward one with steadyshot on, one with it off would make a great phase 2 of the comparison. we'll need to wait a little bit until the hero 4 is released to see if the image stabilization will compare with the sony's Steadyshot; let's hope for at least a little competition!
kaianine I think that's a great idea for the comparison. I wish RUclips would let me upload the raw file in the full quality... when I view the footage on my computer I can literally pause the video at any point and it looks like a 1080p still shot picture with very little blurring, even when I'm moving fast. For raw video, this is a seriously powerful little camera! I'm stoked to see what the hero 4 can do!
Eric Engel I like that idea. It's a RAM X-grip, and while it holds wonderfully about 99% of the time, occasional whoops can knock it out. There are burlier models out there, but check out amzn.to/1fp6VhC
Good Info! I have a refurbished AS10 that I picked up for $85 (I'm a cheap skate to the max!). I need to experiment more with it. I like the "Un-Shaky" videos.
I used it recently as a hat cam to film my father riding a horse and it worked quite well. I am now going to try it with the aux. mic. on some rough terrain. I have also tried it along with the gopro as split screen and the gopro seems to have brighter color. maybe that is just because of the difference in field of view when in steady shot mode.
You're getting to be quite the accomplished rutt rider sir. I am a fan of the steadyshot. It makes snowmobiling footage so much more watchable. Especially shots on hardpack, trail and lakes where you're running a higher speed and still hitting really deep whoops. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't make the stutters disappear, but comparing steadyshot on vs off, or a camera without it, the steadyshot is something I at least want to be able to opt on with these kind of cameras from this point on.
ROCKIN RODNEY Yeah I'm surprised at the feedback I'm getting. Sometimes the jutters make non-stabilized footage nearly unwatchable (imo) and especially when there are amazing vistas that should be watched and enjoyed without shakiness... I REALLY like what tbjimcollins said on my fb page... that steadyshot is good for the scenic stuff while non-stabilized works well for action shots.
Good comparison! Sadly I'm not a fan of the steady shot mode -the way it's lovely and smooth and then snaps across when it reaches the limit of stabilization makes my stomach turn. Besides, watching everything bounce around is half the fun :o)
Akash Kapoor Hmmm the setup is the same as it has always been (well, I got a new helmet and repeated what I did here with aluminum instead of steel). Maybe you're seeing the pre-drilled holes in the metal? It's still on there with dual lock.. that stuff holds like a champ!
Awesome video Sir, and thank you for showing the advantages of the steady shot so clearly. :) I will be getting the AS200VR next month. Can you tell me what microphone you use please?
mictho100 Sure! I user the Movo Lavalier Mic from amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX40Q3C/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HX40Q3C&linkCode=as2&tag=everide-20&linkId=26NRI4MCPNULDA4H
I'm going to wait and see what the new gopro has to offer. Nothing wrong with Sony but I'm all set up with gopro and planning to get a hand held gimbal also. You must have a gimble in your helmet because your raw footage was pretty smooth compared to other helmet vids I've seen. Gimbal in the brain..... Thanks for your test vid. Gives me info to work with.
bdseidler Thanks! I have thought a lot about using the steady shot with a drone... I just have to get a drone! GoPro has a really amazing aftermarket support/hardware following out there... makes them very tough to beat! I hope the Hero 4 is AMAZING!
Which sd card did you use? I know this camera requires an sdxc card for pro mode but which one? This camera does 50mbs but the sdxc available is 32gb 48mbs is that enough or do you have to go higher in order for the pro mode to work like 64gb 80mbs?
its definitely a nice image, I struggle to leave gopro cause there are just too many third party items i use with the gopro, although I just tried to add stabilization in post through the editing software and after 40 hours of rendering it just crashed , boo. Hope to catch ya up at sandy.
Wandering Beast Yes! We're going to meet up tomorrow at 9:30 am at the Safeway in Sandy, then leave by 10:00 am. We'll go to timberline lodge, Hood River, and on to some other scenic stuff, then finish up in Troutdale. Awesome!
Nice video, to the point, nice scenery, subbed+liked. I got a Ghost but I think with IS on the Sony, good mic and remote with the screen i'd get the Sony. Stuck with my Drift for now.
Qudos I've never had a drift but I've heard they are good. As the price continues to drop on the as100v I'd definitely look into it... I can't wait to see what they come up with next!
I have this camera and I can't tell the difference between "regular" and "Pro" mode. Visually, in low motion situations, they are identical. Can anyone explain the difference aside from the increased file size?
Catend I've noticed that when it's not in Pro Mode every few frames is blurred with a clear frame in the middle. In Pro Mode, every frame is crystal clear.
Jeff Noël Glad you dig the look of it! Some people aren't too keen on the steadyshot... I wish there was something in the middle. We'll see how the hero 4 does.
Carmen Forte It's a Movo Lavalier mic hooked directly into the Sony's mic port. Check it out at www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX40Q3C/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HX40Q3C&linkCode=as2&tag=everide-20&linkId=26NRI4MCPNULDA4H
Great video man. Very informative. I subbed you. I love the way you mounted your camera. I just got the as 100v and wasn't overly impressed with the mounting options for moto vlogging so I may have to copy you on that. Also I was wondering what external mic you are using? I'm having trouble figuring out what mic to buy and what exactly is compatible with the as 100v. I don't really need to hear myself talk, I just want to cut down on the wind noise so I can here the sound of my motor. Thanks in advance for your help.
Tony Boucher Sure man! Here's a video on how I mounted it: ruclips.net/video/0JBbMQQ37UQT/видео.htmlhe mic that has worked well for me has been the Audio Technica ATR3350 and the MOVO mic that's the clone. I've been using the MOVO, it's about $10 less and very good. Here's a link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX40Q3C/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HX40Q3C&linkCode=as2&tag=everide-20&linkId=EH2LCKM34CUNT26W
eveRide ADV Thanks a lot for all your help. I just ordered the MOVO mic and I will be heading to home depot to get everything I need to mount my action cam on my helmet this weekend. I have a couple more questions for you if you don't mind, I noticed you have your cam mounted upside down. I'm the least tech savvy person I know and was wondering if you could explain how you flipped the video right side up? Also what software are you using to edit your videos? Once I learn all this stuff I'll be sure to post a vid crediting you as the guy that made it all possible. Lol... I ride a 2014 Dyna Street Bob and a custom bobber so my vids would be slightly different than yours but that's neither here nor there right? Thanks again for all your help.
Tony Boucher Sure man! The AS100v has a "flip" mode to invert the image in the on-camera settings menu. If you don't use that, you can always flip it in post-production. I use Sony Vegas 11 to edit. It's old, but it's before they got the huge goofy buttons and it's really stable and has a nice workflow. Let me know how the mounting works out! :)
***** I'm glad you like it! I was surprised to find out that quite a few people really dislike it... which was a shock to me because in a previous video I did a side-by-side comparison and it was overwhelmingly FOR the steadyshot.
I guess I am just to easy to please. Because I myself think they took great video in both modes and I really don't see enough difference between the riders with GoPro, Sony, or any of the other cameras to dislike any of them. If I decide to purchase one I would just go for the one on sale [ I am a tight wad]. But what do I know I still have a Polaroid One Step camera. Stay safe
Steady shot - not good enough to give that aerial feel, good enough to take away the "I ride with you" feel. My vote is less head move, less steady shotey
John Grammaticus I hope the hero 4 has a happy medium when it comes to stabilization. The sony's is a LOT, but I have a hard time watching juttery footage.
John Grammaticus If you ride on pavement and a bit of gravel like in this video maybe the steadyshot is not neccesary but when you go on really rough terrain it becomes unwatchable without the steady. Remember all those nice videos on youtube have a LOT of editing/production and most people (myself) cant even dream to do that so its nice to have the steady built in the camera.
MrSlowestD16 Hahaha! That's a very accurate simile! If only there was the happy medium between stabilized and juttery. I prefer the err on the side of "too smooth" rather than too wiggly. There's just too much amazing scenery around me :)
I must say...that is one of the most well put together vids I have seen in a looooong time. Very good job!
so i just bought this cam tonight and went for a ride. still was indecisive about keeping it until i saw this video. this is amazing! you're hilarious, great review and im definitely subscribing and I'm keeping the cam, so thanks and keep filming! 👍😉

Good vid!
I have one AS15 since 3 years ago, and I don't like to use steady shot!
Thank you very much sir :) If there is anything I can do to help with your trip through the las vegas area please let me know ..
i get motion sickness too and cant watch go pro anymore. there doesnt seem to be any decent chin mounts though
Hey bud can you tell me how you attached your camera on the helmat chin ?
or suggest me any link if you made any tutorial video ..thanks bud
great comparison between the two modes! one thing that i notice with the steadshot (with the camera pointed forward more than the head shot in this video) that everything more (especially the tall grass and bushes) than 10-15 feed in front of the bike feels a little blurry, even when viewing in higher quality (still blurry in 720p & 1080p).

Always Well Done,
& Again !!!
;)
...and that's a Big'Ol Bug !!!
LOL
Dracati Ducati Haha man thanks!
If you could get more FOV with steady shot I might like it or at least be indifferent, but as is, I prefer NO steady shot.
Hermit DaVlog That's a big problem with the Sony, too... the FOV at the edges in 170 mode become almost ridiculously distorted :\
Good comparison! Sadly I'm not a fan of the steady shot mode -the way it's lovely and smooth and then snaps across when it reaches the limit of stabilization makes my stomach turn. Besides, watching everything bounce around is half the fun :o)
Lasty Yeah somebody needs to come up with a more subtle steadyshot... well see how the Hero 4 does!
On your DIY camera mount video, you used 3M Velcro but in this video, I see some screws, was there any problem with using just the 3M fasteners?
Akash Kapoor Hmmm the setup is the same as it has always been (well, I got a new helmet and repeated what I did here with aluminum instead of steel). Maybe you're seeing the pre-drilled holes in the metal? It's still on there with dual lock.. that stuff holds like a champ!
Oh, maybe it is. Aha sorry, I just noticed those screws and I was about to get some dual lock for that set up and just got worried lol
The steady shot actually makes me feel a bit motion sick, which usually doesn't happen to me from video.
how can i mount my sony under my chin like yours?
Awesome video Sir, and thank you for showing the advantages of the steady shot so clearly. :) I will be getting the AS200VR next month. Can you tell me what microphone you use please?

Aubrey Roche Thanks! Always glad to answer questions or help if you need it!
I'm watching this video in 2017. Do you still recommend the camera, or should i just go with the latest model? ( if there is any )
its definitely a nice image, I struggle to leave gopro cause there are just too many third party items i use with the gopro, although I just tried to add stabilization in post through the editing software and after 40 hours of rendering it just crashed , boo. Hope to catch ya up at sandy.

what editing software did you use for your video?
+Carmen Forte I use Sony Movie Studio 11. It's cheap, reliable, and plenty functional... just like the bikes I like :)
What type of mic set up do you use on the helmet?
Carmen Forte It's a Movo Lavalier mic hooked directly into the Sony's mic port. Check it out at www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX40Q3C/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HX40Q3C&linkCode=as2&tag=everide-20&linkId=26NRI4MCPNULDA4H
thanks. i ended up getting a mic, realizing now the stock harnessing sucks/can't hook a mic up with the case on.
