  • Dublin - The Point Theatre, May 11,1996.
7000 fans filled the floor at The Smashing Pumpkins hit the stage. 110 security guards scrambled behind the barricades to control the flow of the mosh pits as they formed as the Pumpkins began to play.
A few minutes into the show Billy Corgan could feel that something was wrong. He told the crowd to take a step back. At 10 pm, Billy said that they would stop the show if they didn't stop moshing.
For Bernadette O'Brien, a 17 year high school student, it was already too late. O'Brien, who was near the front of the stage with a friend and two cousins crushed by the overpowering crowd.
When informed of the girl's injuries, Corgan told the crowd: "I'm sorry we can't play on. The gig's over. There's a girl out there who's nearly dying. We as human beings cannot play up here while people are getting seriously hurt down there."
The following day, Bernadette was taken off life-support at Mater Hospital in Dublin. It was announced that she died from massive internal injuries. The Pumpkins sent flowers to her funeral and released a statement extending their condolences to Bernadette O'Briens family and friends.

Was at this show too, right up the front at the barrier, terrifying experience. The problem was not moshing or crowd surfing, it was the uncontrollable surge of bodies towards the front. You had a crowd of 8,000 people with no barrier to split the crowd from the back to the front. You were so tightly packed between standing bodies that you had absolutely no control of where you stood. Three songs in is where it reached breaking point when the crowd started swaying causing many people, myself included, to slip down to the ground. I was lying on the ground throughout the third song, nobody standing above me was able to pick me up or they would have slipped on top of me and made things worse. They stopped playing after that song which is where the audio here comes in. More would have died had they not stopped at that moment. RIP Bernadette O'Brien

Thanks for telling your story. I saw the Pumpkins in late april 96 in France, at the barrier and I thought I was really lucky when I read about the Dublin show a few weeks later. That show must have been really scary to attend...This recording shows that people in the back (where it was recorded) had no clue of what was going on down the front. These people going "D'Arcyyyyyyyyyyyyy", "Billyyyyyyyyyy" or booing despite what the band kept on saying.

The layout of the point now (as the 3Arena) is much better as there is much more space on each side. and the back is closer, much easier for security crews to enter. I wasn't at this but my brother was and he told me how bad it was. Also, Filter, who were supporting SP on this tour have filmed footage of their set from this night.

@@soeffingwhat wasn't at this gig but saw Therapy? there in '95 and what struck me as particularly dangerous were the small barriers (looked like public bike stands) dotted around near the front; you could pass through them to get closer to the band no bother but if there was a crush backwards you'd get pinned against one, happened to me at one stage with spine jammed against this thing and a mass of people pushing from in front, scary af and was careful of them from then on. they were gone after the SP gig. the Pumpkins crowd would have been ferocious, massive band playing at end of school term and people were extra-hyped.

@@okilfeathermusic Yep and probably a lot of underage drinking too. I did notice those barriers were gone after 1996 and nothing like that happened since, and thinking back now I don't know how they thought the owners of the poiint would help. B the old Point, though I liked it, had some other issues. The idea of not being allowed to bring your drink into the auditorium? What a ridiculous idea. As if people having to "down" their pints so they could go in was going to actually help at all. The only time I remember that rule being relaxed was when I saw Meatloaf there in 2007 (a few months before the Point was closed to start its "refurbishment" into the O2 (now the 3Arena lol).. As though the staff felt the Meatloaf Audience was "mature enough to let them bring drinks in"....And a Rock audience full of denim and leather clad adults isn't? What patronizing bullshit. In any case its far better now.

Ive been to over 60 gigs since-and having slammed and moshed my way through circle pits, walls of deaths over the years, I still remember the utter mania and the following terror in the crowd that night. The immence craziness was exploding everywhere even when support band Filter were warming up the boiling Point audience.
After this, there was a huge clampdown on moshing at gigs, with warnings of ejections printed on tickets for every other show that happened in its wake.

Wow long time since i heard this. I was at the show in 1996 too. Terrible tragedy. Was about 2 rows back from the crowd part that collapsed. Was a very young crowd at the show from what i remember. Would have to have been as i was only 16 at the time.

I was at this too..the band were huge at the time, and they were the soundtrack to my life as a 16 yr old in '96. I remember scavaging for my friends outside the Point after the show-amidst a sea of equally minded frantic thousands. Everyone trying to call and find eachother. No luxeries of mobile phones, or txting back then--regrouping and checking for eachother took ages. Billys words ringing in the mind-were my friends ok? Is he/she the one backstage in serious trouble?

The Point was a death trap back then. Very few barriers, was well more than 7,000 people which is thought by fake tickets but they rekon it was closer to 8000. My sis was at this gig and was lucky. She isnt tall, started to get crushed and go down before some bloke pulled here out and saved her. Alot more would have been hurt if it wasnt for the bands instincts.

    • @soeffingwhat
      @soeffingwhat 5 лет назад +1

I wouldn't say it was a death trap but a lot was done to make sure that would never happen again, and thankfully it never did. That said the layout as the 3Arena is much better and safer. Always plenty of room on each side and easier for the security to get in if needs be.

I watched a BBC documentary on the Hillsborough disaster last night and the accounts of survivors describing the build up to the disaster brought back memories of this gig - harrowing similarities in their descriptions of being in a packed but enthusiastic crowd, reassuring friends they'd be fine but within a minute losing any control of their movement. From watching that documentary you realise how lucky it was that more were not killed at this gig. That certainly would have been the case had SP not paused for several minutes after the 3rd song. Tragic that even then it was too late for Bernadette. I found this interview where Billy, back in Dublin a couple of years later, speaks of their sorrow. A touching reflection...

I remember gigs in those days were just insane. The most scary gig I've ever been to was inexplicably the Presidents of the USA at Brixton Academy around the same time. I remember being totally unable to control which direction my body was pointing in and the surging in the crowd was completely overwhelming, even for a 6 foot tall 16 yr old such as myself. You just had to go with it and pray you didn't fall down and if you did someone was able to pick you back up. RIP Bernadette O'Brien.

I was there, what a tragedy it was. Being in the crowd was mental, so much so that I had to leave and watch from down the back. Still happy to be able to say I saw them as a 13 year old when they were at their peak. R.I.P Bernadette o' Brien

Ive actually got the show on bootleg cassette tape-had it for years now. I never listen to it, but hearing the audio here brought back a lotta memories.
On one hand,it was initally beyond incredible to see and feel them at their peak-and Siamese Dream especially is still one of my favourite albums. But yeah, horrible because of the tragedy. It made the main news in the following weeks Kerrang! as well. Everybody was talking about it.

We all sat and drank on the 2 1/2 hour hired bus trip home-thinking about what the Hell had just happened, trying to process it. You never expect something like that to happen at a show your at-only happens on TV,you think. Next day,we heard the terrible news on the Radio, and it was like, "Shit..."
Mellon Collie had propelled them to stratospheric heights-everyone I knew liked some of their songs and went on account of that. The promoters should have upgraded that show to the larger RDS.
