Love it!
As the blue collar guy I cannot get over the 1300 dollar price difference in these boats. I realized the Hobie has some advantages and is built a little better but I can't see more than a grand worth of extras in the two. Maybe do a comparison to the compass ? More apples to apples. For me in this one the price difference alone wins this round for Pelican to me..
You could almost but two of the pelicans for 1 of the Hobie that also wins to me as you get someone else on the water I'd you're looking to spend that much
@@BlueCollarFishing Once they offer a reverse feature in the Pelican catch drive its going to force a drastic price reduction in the competitors pedal drives..This Kayak and others are just the opening salvo..
The 2020 offerings will be quite interesting..
I need to do a comparison with the compass too for sure
@@SuperVidtech if they are going to use the Hobie mirage drive design for that than that will be a few more years. I honestly haven't found the quick reverse in Hobie that quick in the ones I've been on a test day on. For fishing thou I don't own one yet seems the pedal drive is best for getting there and just use a paddle to turn around or move around silently better. I agree with you on with increased competition benefits consumers making more affordable option s in the market.
the Pelican 180 clone I think is way off. I don't believe that paten expires for awhile.
Thanks for putting out all these videos on the Catch 130HD! I've been waiting for more details on the kayak since they were first announced. Ive fished out of a friend's outback numerous times and love it. For as often as I get out and kayak fish though, I'm finding it hard to justify spending that much money on one. The pelican is definitely at a price point I'm interested in and would be willing to sacrifice a few extras to keep cost down. I've been using a non-fishing sit inside kayak to fish for the last 5 years, anything would be an improvement. The pedal drive kayaks appeal to me mostly for the ability to easily troll and cover longer distances in less favorable conditions.Keep the videos coming, thanks!
Great review. Thanks for showing us all that! Helped me make some decisions on my first pedal kayak.
Thank you Thomas 😃 what boat did you get?
Already press the like button before the video start. Good job Alex you’re doing a great job! Keep the videos coming.
Amazing!!! Love it, thanks brother
I just picked up my 2019 Hobie outback seagrass color and couldn’t be more happy with my purchase!!!
seagrass for the win! I had mine out yesterday, limited out on snappers, had bixpy on it, it was nice
This is a great video series. The Pelican looks like a fantastic option for alot of people.
100% for people who don't want to spend much this is a nice pedal yak
I just saw that Hobie has a retro fit kit to take there pedal system and turn it into a 180 drive (forward and reverse). Will this kit work on the pelican drive system? Or does Pelican have and option of reverse?
Nice video and overview of the kayaks
Thanks buddy
You have inspired me to create my own fishing channel. Thank Hermano.
Congratulations bro, go for it 🙂
Great video, I like all your video’s I’ve been subscribed to your channel for quit some time now. If you had to buy only one of those Kayak’s which one would you buy?
Good breakdown 👍
Keeping it real brother 😁
Almost bought the Pelican but, no reverse was crucial for me ....
Went for the Outback instead.
I love the Outback but, this new one is def thinner in the hull that previous years, you can feel the plastic is just not as thick and flimsy... hopefully not an issue in the future.
I love the rails and storage on the Outback, rigging dream.
Good vid brother, I can not wait for the snow and Ice to go away so I can get my filming on the water done.
Yup reverse is important, the plastic on the outback flexes for sure
Great review 👍
Thanks buddy
Great video men🤙🏻
Thanks buddy 😁😁
Dope comparison. Send me that Pelicant Catch 130 when you are finished 😁
Sold it hahaha 😆
Travis check today's video tell me if my youtubeness improved
I'm probably never gonna buy a kayak this expensive but I do like watching these videos lol and this is a great video I've had an aquaterra prism that was sold to me by a retired marine that bought it in Oct 1993!! I've had it for a while and it has done me so damn well for the 200 bucks I bought it for. But last month i bought a brand new cabelas adventure pro 120 that i haven't taken out because everything is still frozen in Alaska lol it seems like a great quality boat that i got on sale for 600!!
Alaska? Wow I wanna fish Alaska one day it is in my list of amazing things to do. Spring is almost here, the adventure pro 120 isn't that made by Feelfree?
@@AliexFolgueira yes it is made by feel free and yeah Alaska fishing is amazing!
That's a great review on both boats. I think there both very nice kayaks for what they are. I've never sat in the pelican seat but I always wondered if it was more comfortable. I keep a stadium seat cushion on my kayak seat for those long days on the water. Great job Aliex 😎.
David, do you have a link for the cushion?
@@AliexFolgueira I'll see if I can find it it was a $4 stadium cushion made by Ozark trail at Walmart in sporting goods. And it was water repellent
I'll check it out at wa
Any seat for a 5 years kid, infront ? I have the pelikan hidrive II 110
Outback vs oldtown sportsman pdl
Which one more stable?
Gracias compa. I like the Pelican.
Nice boat
I'm very impressed w/ the Pelican for the $. I wonder about the life span of the HD, it's hull insert... & how much abuse can it take...like hitting a stump in the water... ( I have done that a few times w/ my Hobie... so far not a big deal to fix) But I'm still keeping the Pelican Catch HD130 on my list ... for now... I want to see how it compares the Compass & the Lightning Strike
I'll compare it to the compass soon, I think this drive will not be as rugged as the Hobie one but pelican has great customer service, let's see how it handles it over time
Some other things that might not have been mentioned.
1. Hobie is most likely faster that the pelican, due to the difference in drives and hull design.
2. Seat quality, if I am not mistaken the hobie seat looks like it is made of ABS plastic, the pelican seat looks like it is made of metal.
3. The pelican rudder system has metal wires for control, the hobie looks to have some sort of poly rope?
Personally I am going to buy a Catch 130 hd, as I really like the stronger, lighter plastic that they use, and all the features that are offered for 1500.
The pelican is slower due to the wide stern, I tested it.
I like the seat on the pelican better more confortable
Hobie rope is better for saltwater applications because the metal will rust soon, it last about a year or so
are the 2 drives interchangeable with each other?
The Hobie drive works on Pelican
Do you think the Hobie (compass) worth the $449 more than the catch 130 hd?
Regular compass? Nop I don't think so
Thanks for the side by side. I really didnt see anything to justify that $1300 difference in price. Maybe the drive but if the Pelican can accept the Hobie drive that is an even bigger selling point for the Pelican.
The mirage drive works great with the pelican for sure. You do get some extra goodies on the ob, but maybe it is not needed
@@AliexFolgueira Those extras are not $1300 dollars worth. for that much I would add a bixby drive and add to the Pelican and have both electric and pedal power.
Bixpy added to pelican boom!
hey could you make comparison kayak hobbie outback and budjet gomo h12...same body (like copy cat) but not in size 14ft and 12ft..
Do you have a link for the h12 not familiar
@@AliexFolgueira m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2750503904959915&id=1588800217796962
Great comparison. The review definitely makes the pelican look like a good contender, especially for the price point. I do have some concerns of the construction of the pelican though. I don’t have any issues with the seam, just like with woodworking, the glued areas are typically stronger than the non glued areas. However, my wife does have a pelican trailblazer, cheapo 200 dollar sit in kayak made from their RamX plastic. Very light and convenient, but very thin Hull. I’ve never looked into their sit on tops, how’s the Hull thickness on the pelican compared to the hobie ? If it’s as thin as the trail blazer I’d be worried around eventually wearing or denting/puncturing the hull.
I have the trailblazer as well, I turned into a go kart kayak. I may do some drilling into it and see how thick it is
Can you put turbo fins on the pelican drive system just curious.
Not yet. Maybe once pelican releases their own version because the Hobie ones are not compatible
Aliex have you ever tried the Kaku Wahoo 12.5 ? i was wondering about that kayak and what your thoughts are on it
No but it looks awesome, I hear it is super stable too
@@AliexFolgueira thanks for answering back. ill be buying my first kayak and I am still doing research trying to find the right one I live so far away from any kayak dealer I depend on videos like your for research thanks again
I'd solve the Pelican seat problem with some plastic caps on the end of the tubes. One on each end should do it.
I wouldn't cut a hatch in the front or back. The deck is strong but I wouldn't want to weaken it. Plus I have a feeling that the lack of a hatch is what's preventing water from getting in the hull. You start drilling holes or cutting out hatches, you're probably going to need to install a drain plug too.
The hull design of the pelican alone is a good enough reason to go with the hobie.
I just bought a used pelican. The stability leaves more to be desired. Especially with cold water now makes it scary. When I turn around to get my poles damn near feel like I’m going to completely flip.
Great review Aliex. The Hobie looks sleeker and faster. There is a lot of comments regarding reverse on the drive system. I think the Hobie reverse system is a bit of a gimmick to match the competition. If reverse was really important to you then better to buy a kayak with the bicycle type drive. Hobie should offer the Outback with the GT drive as an option and lower the price.
The mirage drive reverse feels weird at first but after you use it for a while it gets easier I do use it a lot but nothing like instant reverse for sure
Get bar ends for bicycle handle bars you can get the press ins wich are normally a polymer or get the screw in wedge blocks wich ar normally easier to plug into smaller pipe for the slop in the pelican seat
Thanks Chris I'll look into it
Still prefer the Revo 13 - it feels like a kayak and can still be paddled comfortably. The best way is to try them all out in open water. But it all depends on your budget and how you plan to use it.
The revo 13 is faster for sure, demo if you can yup
I just need to come down and fish with you for the day. Get a real live demo. 😂
Let's go
Pelican is best made kayak are the catch 120s...yes no hydryve system and paddle only but the stability and how it runs in water when you're fishing is amazing...for the prize of 1k...can't really beat that.
They both float, they both work, will that $1300 difference guarantee you catch more fish? I got a pelican catch 120 (no hydrive) and probably will upgrade to the 130 hydrive soon. $1300 extra will go towards gopro mounts, fishing gear and probably a nice PFD...
Yup gives you more options
Can't find the video where you tried the mirage drive system on the pelican HD
What had happened was.. It took me to long to edit this one 😂, I'll have that one ready for Monday
Alex did the pelican accept the hobie drive 180 without issue?
Hey aliex i got the pelican catch 130 love the kayak being a big at 280lb 6'2 the pelican does great in the marsh and also the plus side i saved lots of money and got me new pfd and other gear for my kayak
That's the key right there, buying a cheaper boat allows you to save some $$ for much needed accessories
How does it do on rivers with other boats going by?
@@catchnothingfishing6457 it does really good you really cant go wrong with the pelican catch 130
@@catchnothingfishing6457 its not a hobie but it hold it own with the big name brands out there
@@AliexFolgueira no lie was able to buy a c-tug cart for yhe kayak new paddle hell even a new reel lol
Hey Alex no comparation outback is better!💪🎣
Outback is $1300 more, so that right there is a huge factor
Would you recommend the pelican for saltwater?
1000% here it took it offshore here ruclips.net/video/X4Hm8zsxqBE/видео.html
Just make sure you rinse it off thoroughly with fresh water after using it in salt water :)
if it was completely up to you and your experiences what would you pick passport 10.5 or hydryve 110
Hydryve 110 all the way
Aliex Folgueira i was leaving more towards the hydryve but now ik what im going to get because i have no idea about kayaks when it comes to experience but i’ve watched probably 20 of your videos on them thank you for the content keep it up 👍
@@nashbarber4085 I have used the 110 on many trips it is a good boat, I find the passports too cheap
Aliex Folgueira thats definitely the one i’m gonna get now i’m probably gonna put a few extra rod holders on it and put a few hatches in it. for the most part i’m probably going to be just using it for bass and maybe kayaking big shark baits 200yds off the beach
Aliex Folgueira how well does the hydryve pedaling system hold up to corrosion from the salt water
why dont they make an adapter that will allow the new hobie drive on the pelican? should be easy to 3d print something.
The new hobie drive works! Not a100% fit but look it does work watch this video ruclips.net/video/LkXFuGznJvI/видео.html
What is the length of the pelican tank well (stern)
Keep in mind that the rear tank well is not a perfect rectangle... but the length at the base from fore to aft is roughly 20 1/2 inches. Hope this helps!
Try some heat shrink tubing on those Pelican seat bars/legs. It'll still move, but the rubber may give it some friction and move a little less.
Thanks Chris 😁
Thanks for this Aliex! Great comparison. I could not find your video where you put the Mirage 180 in it though. Does it simply just drop in? Is it faster with it?
Just drop in, I'm gonna publish that one soon
Aliex Folgueira thanks!
Could you buy a mirage 180 drive and drop it into the pelican?
It fits but not sure it is a great idea
For me its about resale value. I dont buy new hobies I usually buy a year or two old. And use for a couple years and resale for close to what I purchase for. Its a way for me to keep upgrading to a newer model. And so far I have came out on top. Resale for a hobie is great if u buy used. Key word.. Used.
Ohh yeah you can get deals on used hobies and then sell them fore more $ that what you paid, I have done that lol
Will the hobie drive fit in the hydrive hole?
Ohh yeah I did some testing here ruclips.net/video/LkXFuGznJvI/видео.html
Hello Aliex, I just bought the Pelican Catch 130 HD, I have a request when you have spare half hour. can you compare the Pedal drive of the 2 Pelican and Hobie Outback close up with ruler Hight, Width, length, even if you can just email me would be cool Juan.
I bought the Pelican Enforcer 120x, which is a paddle yak. I just couldnt justify spending over 1k on a kayak. For what I do, the 550.00 Enforcer is perfect. It paddles and tracks great, and its a pretty fast boat. If I had the money to burn, maybe I would buy a hobie, but I drive a truck for a living, so I dont see that happening.
You can put away $29 a week and in a year you will have enough to buy you a pelican catch 130 or a used compass
will this pelican handle rougher waters, like offshore or bays? the price in in my budget.
Ohh yeah! Just don't go on crazy weather
@@AliexFolgueira awesome videos, thx u
It's crazy the price difference but both good boats.
Any word on the Lightning Kayaks?
Nothing yet I'm working on it
I think if Pelican redesigns the stern to be 4 inches narrower to cut back on the drag/noise I think they would dominate the budget kayak market...still not a bad boat for the price
Yessss please!! It creates drag. Make it narrower
will you flip the pa 14 soon?
Hopefully soon I'm working on it
A peace of pvc 1"pipe for a spacer will fill the gap in the seat and make it tight.
I’ve been waiting for this comparison!
There’s so much to say that’s great about the Pelican. I actually really like the open deck design, for one thing. And of course the price; I could almost get two Pelicans for the cost of an Outback. But I don’t like the single seat position in the Pelican. As a 5’1” woman I’m not sure whether I could comfortably reach the pedals??!
Not really sure whether the lack of flex is a good thing or not-could the Pelican plastic crack or become brittle?
There’s no comparison in the finish and built in features and the overall “polish”; they’re not even in the same class. Hobie is the Rolls Royce and Pelican is the Subaru!
But the Pelican is honestly just SO ugly to me. 😭
I honestly think that if we lived in Florida and could kayak all year instead of the 6 months we get here in NY, I’d buy an Outback for myself and two of the Pelicans for my kids. (And a PA for my husband because he fly fishes & wants a bigger boat). Since we can only kayak half the year, it’s a pretty tough decision.
Yeah the color is not my fav but I kinda like the ugly looking look it is different! Lol you need to move to FL, year round kayaking
I was born and raised in FL! I miss some things about it for sure.
I’m going to laugh forever about you liking the ugly looking kayak 😂 I think it would be better if the top & bottom were the same for one thing. I do like the orange bungees, at least.
Haha maybe I should do a custom paint job on it
Aliex Folgueira LOL!!! I swear I’ve been thinking about ‘painting’ my stupid Lifetime kayak!
Why did you blur out Hobie when close up to the front hatch?
Has some personal info
@@AliexFolgueira makes sense, I was just being nosey. 😆
Lol
I heard that pelican bougt the pedaldrive from hobie is this true?
I don't think so, this drive is made I china, i bet they are mass produced
@@AliexFolgueira ok. Thanks for this information
The hobie patent expired so anyone can use it now, this is the old drive system not the new one they're using now.
What do you do for a living? Help me out.
See what you don't use anymore that you can sell, see what you spend money on that you don't need, see if you can learn a new skill to get pay more or use something you already know to help people...
I assume the Pelican molding process isn't strong enough to handle the drive system, so they needed to make the insert to handle the force of the drive.
Interesting, are you going to try one Percy?
@@AliexFolgueira No, I'm happy with my real Hobies. ;)
Lol when is the championship? Do they have the hobies for you there waiting? I wonder how that works, vlog. It
@@AliexFolgueira Hobie Worlds 8 is July 24-26. Yes they will have about 50 Hobie Pro Angler 14's all rigged up for us. They have them all lined up with each competitors name and country flag on them.
The molding process isn’t the issue, Pelican uses twin sheet thermoforming and not rotomolding. Basically a Pelican kayak is made in two halves then welded together. The sheets can’t stretch enough without making them too thin to create a port for the drive. The insert seals off the internal gap between the sheets inside the hull, stiffens the deck and hull, and provides a more rugged point for the peddling motion to apply stress.
Love the video!!! Can you compare the actual peddle drives side by side. I saw this one video where the pelican drive was having issues with their screws eating away some of the plastic... Pelican replaced what was needed for the customer and has replied to the youtuber, has been promised changes in the future...
I will do that soon, I wanna put lots of miles on this drive tomorrow
How tall are you Aliex? I'm 5' 3" and in one of your vids I remember you saying that it feels like you can't reach the peddles or you were uncomfortable... I believe you said you were on the last setting to bring the peddles closer ...
Im 5.11 but I'm weird like, I had no shoes on that plays a a role, I'm gonna have my son try it
Hey @Addictedjr3, you raise a great concern. As of right now, only two people have reported having the issue where "their screws eating away some of the plastic". Russel Huff, is the one who created the video you see on RUclips and he has not re-experienced that issue on his new pedal drives. ;-)
I apologize if I have raised a great concern about the peddle drive... I'm trying to find out more about the hobie drive compared to the pelican before I make my final decision on which kayak I will be purchasing...
Sorry, don't want to be negative - the Pelican is nice for the price, and has lots of space but beyond that the finish is like an old 1970's naugahyde sofa and it's slow. I'd put in extra money for the Compass or maybe a better comparison would be with the Riot Mako 12. Doesn't have the room of the Pelican, but a good hull design, relatively light and I think it would be quite a bit faster. Also better for a surf launch.
Hopefully we get those riots in for testing, I'm enjoying my pelican, wanna surf test it
Try doing a max weight before they sink no one does it!!!!! Please btw your videos are awesome thank you!!!!!!
Brooo I been wanting to do that! 500# of cement blocks which I had my pool
@@AliexFolgueira please try to do it I think it would be cool because the manufacturer doesn't show how they get the max capacity would love to see it thanks. You rock!!!!
Love yoyAliex you are the best
Thanks bro
It will be interesting to see if the pedal drive mount on the Pelican's hull becomes a leak point over time... Such a large hole and the mount cannot be glued together because it's two different plastic materials, so it relies strictly on the fasteners to hold the gasket water tight. As plastic warps over time from UV and heat, it will be interesting to see how tight the gasket stays. I wish Pelican showed us how they assemble the pedal drive mount into their twin sheet hulls.
Would be interesting to see how it does over time, it doesn't look like the material flexes too much
@@AliexFolgueira That's good. I wonder if it did, does it falls under the one year warranty on the HyDryve, or if it would fall under "limited lifetime" of hull.
Hey @Cup & Cone, The pedal housing is not a watertight structure and it is not designed to be as we want to make sure that it can be easily rinsed and cleaned. The design also makes drying it out a lot quicker. What is watertight is the large "scupper hole" the housing covers. The material is fused the same way our scupper holes are fused. The housing acts as a buffer between the drive and the watertight hull. Hope this clears up your concern. :)
@@PelicanSportVideos - Thank you for explaining this. That is reassuring. I have yet to see one apart, so was wondering how it was constructed with the twin sheets. Should be fairly water tight, then!
Do think I could put a larry chair in the rear of the out back so my 6 year old son could go fishing with me on the 2019 outback?
For Sure bro
Please do you know if there is a pelican dealer in Pensacola?
Check pelican sports dot come
Hey Alex, I might be wrong but I think the rivets you are referring to on the Pelican are actually Alan or Torx bolts. They look removable to me but obviously I don't have a physical kayak here to look haha. xD
I'll take a look at it again, they look like rivet
@@AliexFolgueira If you add a front hatch you could always drill out the rivets and replace them with bolts and add a backplate for extra strength.
They are rivets and I though about replacing them with bolts and washer and nuts
@@AliexFolgueira I noticed the mounting plate for the rudder is riveted in as well, I'm thinking about ordering some 3/8" thick HDPE and making backing plates for it and the bow and stern carry handles and replacing all the rivets with panhead bolts and locking nuts. I'd rather spread the pressure out along a larger section of the hull wall than rely on expansion pressure from the rivets on a small surface area. It should reduce the risk of cracks.
I have been thinking of doing something like that too so I can have bixpy there... The handles being using rivets is not a great idea nor the rudder
Muito bom esses caiaques o hobby no Brasil custa uma fortuna, mas não temos representantes de marcas como esse pelican para concorrer, não existe nenhum caiaque de fabricação brasileira que se compara a um hobbye ... Um abraço meu amigo!
Next video ON THE WATER COMPARISON?
Like a speed race? Stability dual?
I’d go with the pelican without question!
Pelican is a nice boat for sure, not as fancy though
Aliex Folgueira I’m ok with not fancy! 👍 they both float that’s all I care about
That's right
Between those two I’m leaning Pelican
With the increase in cost yearly that Hobie does, they should have done a better job of getting their kayaks waterproofed. Especially since the yak is advertised to be an offshore sailing vessel. I am still not sold on Pelican with its rivets vs bolt ins qnd the shell is made. Weld seams still weaken versus a roto mold. The Lightning Strike has everything the Hobie says less reverse and is 1000.00 less expensive.
I need to get my hands on the lighting for sure
waiting to check out the Lightning Strike also.
You can crush a Hobie with the pressure needed to break that seam. Rotomold kayaks use a softer plastic and have inconsistencies in the hull thickness.
Aliex how tall are you? I noticed you said that you have the pedals on the pelican set on the closest setting, just wondering because I'm not the tallest
I'm 510
@@AliexFolgueira can you suggest a pedal drive kayak for a vertically challenged person i'm only 5'2" i dont think i would probably reach the pedals lol
He stress test those Kayaks for real. That is what he do! there... Uuujuuummm.
Yup that's my second job
The main drawback with the pelican is that I can see is it doesn't have a port for a sounder or did I miss it? It's called a catch but no sounder port very strange or am I blind Alex? Also new video from us on Monday hopefully snorkeling at our local spot with bikini girl Melly.
it doesn't have a transducer mounting recess in the hull, but a Scotty #141 transducer mounting arm is only like $35. I bought the Pelican, and that is what I ended up doing. The nice part was the transducer arm has a gearhead on the top allowing you to use their universal fish finder mount ($15) for the head unit eliminating the need to run a lot of cable with the limited hull access on the Pelican. There is a downside to the Hobie, it is designed only for most Lowrance products, if you want a Garmin, Hummingbird, or Raymarine etc. it may not mount in right out of the box leaving you to modify the mounting point or bracket, and depending on the transducer style, it may not fit in the recess without paying for an aftermarket cover plate. I also don't believe using the in-hull recess you can't use a side scanning fish finder.
It only has two scupper holes but no transducer hole, but you can easily add a transducer arm using a railblaza kit
@@AliexFolgueira yeah but that's super messy those arms and just another thing to get in the way of your fishing line. For a Yak of 2499 dollerydoos in Australia I think it is should come with a sounder port, even my old Malibu jobby has one.
The way it is constructed I don't think it allows them to do that
couldnt harder plastic break easier ??
Drag race?
No reason to buy a budget kayak when guy can get the grade A for the same price slightly used. Of course it very by region but around CA a 2017 outback can be had for about $1600.

I do not understand why a pedal drive is so much more expensive. Its not that complex. It should not cost that much. Its 2 pedals connected to a couple paddles. The drive system is probably made for $100 max. They rape us on the prices.
pattens! R and D costs $$
go in the water!
???
I find the pelican a better made kayak 👍👍👈
Cool boat no doubt
I like the pelican because of our avian ancestery’s
They are always around

U should start a company called hobilican
Never been impressed with pelican hulls have used them and they are very thin. Also have been seeing several video pop up about drives breaking on the pelican. I Personally wouldn’t trade
my hobie for 10 pelicans.
I can see that the drive needs some refinement, mine have been working fine I'll do more testing for sure
Open deck all the way for a cooler
Pelican should be compared to a Hobie Compass Not to the outback.
Why? Let's see hobie outback and pelican 130 are about the same length, width and weight, use similar propulsión systems
This is a very odd video...why compare a budget Pelican Catch to the premium Outback. Why not just compare it to the ProAngler? A better comparison would have been to the Hobie Compass. There are a lot of differences between the boats. First of all the Hobie is a one piece rotomolded hull, whereas the Pelican is a three piece hull assembly which has been bonded to each other. It consists of a bottom hull, a top plate and the drive mount. There is not as much strength or water-seal as a one piece unit. The Hobie has never used a Garmin system. As a company, they sponsor use of a Lowrance range of products and makes a dedicated sonar transducer compartment in the hull with in the hull hidden wiring. Please don't confuse the pedal drive units. The Pelican uses the older GT drive unit style with tapered fins. The patent is still in force for the newer ARC 180 system. Try doing a speed test between the two and then you will see that there is no comparison to the 2019 Outback. The $1300 price difference is totally justified. A better comparison would be between the Hobie Compass and the Pelican. They have similar pedal drives without reverse, similar seating with limited adjustment, and no front hatch. But I am willing to bet that the Compass with its one piece hull design will still pedal better than the Pelican. Instead of testing on the grass, an on the water test is needed between the two so that you won't be confused. Thanks
The deck and hull of our kayaks are not "bonded" together. They are fused together through high heat and pressure... just like rotomolded kayaks are tiny bits of plastic melted together under high heat. Our hulls are just as watertight. What is not as watertight on our kayaks as on the Hobie is our hatches. Hobie will use watertight gaskets where we do not.
@@PelicanSportVideos Sorry for the semantics, I should have used fused instead of bonded; my bad. What I was trying to point out was the multiple three-piece construction vs a single fused intact boat. I do understand that a good fusion between the deck and hull would actually provide a reinforced band around the boat. But a defect in the fusion could cause weakness or a leak. My main concern is the non-fused drive mount to the hull. This is subject to vibration through pedal torque and hitting bottom. Of course, this guy's testing on grass doesn't prove a thing. Please don't get me wrong. I am totally supportive of both Pelican and Lightning being successful. We need more competition in the marketplace to keep prices reasonable. There was a time Hobie was the King of the Hill. They need to feel some competition from another mirage drive type boat. Good luck
@@SilverShadow2LWB we hear what you're saying. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there about our materials and process and we just like to clear up any confusion. It's a big pie and there is enough for everyone! Yum, Yum ;-)
The housing was designed specifically not to be watertight. This allows for easy rinsing and quick drying. It also acts as a buffer between the hull and the drive so that any damage that could happen, happens to the housing which is easily replaced. The housing itself pretty much sits in one giant scupper hole which is watertight. But yes, a defect in the manufacturing process could cause water to enter the boat. That's why we offer a Limited Lifetime Warranty against such defects ;-)
