I can tell how much you loved this place, loved these people...This meant a lot to you. You have served well. Rest now, Brother... Rest... Find your Peace.
Besides history books & limited references, read some exploits from Paul Fanshaw in SOF magazine yrs ago. He's passed away recently, but garnered respect among his peers at the magazine behind the scenes. Recently found your site ,thanks
Howdy Thomas......great video! been waiting for a vid from you about the FFL airborne unit. Funny, you talked about pay in that unit, when I was in Vietnam as an airborne infantryman I was making a whole $350.00 a month tax free and that was for being a Sgt. E-5, jump pay, overseas pay, and combat pay. That was a lot of money in '67-'68, especially since you didn't have nowhere to spend it until you went on R&R! But you know, dear brother, even if we didn't get any jump pay I would have gone airborne any way......just to have those beautiful silver jump wings on my chest and be a part of the fraternity of the best fighting men on earth. As we said in the U.S. Army, " if you ain't airborne you ain't shit ". Thanks Thomas and I look forward to your next video. By the way that Calvi is a beautiful post and so pristine looking. AIRBORNE! ALL THE WAY my brother, have a blessed day, Fraternally, John Bernstein
Howdy Nick.....just got your reply! What a pleasure to hear from a brother trooper from England. I reckon we couldn't have met at a better channel than Thomas Gast. Where are you located? I am in southeast Texas in Houston. Would enjoy to stay in contact with you as I am retired from the fire dept. Best wishes to y'all and look forward to hearing from you AIRBORNE! John
Ich war zwar "nur" bei der Bundeswehr aber ich verstehe deine Begeisterung Kamerad. Man merkt das du authentisch bist und kein Märchenonkel. Mach weiter so
I was a Paratrooper in the US Army stationed in Panama with the 1/508th Parachute Infantry for 2 years. I did enjoy my time as a Paratrooper. The guys I was with were awesome and crazy and have never forgotten them over the years. We did training and jumps in Honduras and Costa Rica to include stateside places like Florida and Ft.Bragg North Carolina home of the 82nd Airborne. I was in the Panama Invasion of 1989 and years later in Iraq from 2006-08 with 2 different Infantry battalions. But nothing like being a Paratrooper the experience was memorable.
Hi Thomas. I left the British Army last year and I would like to go and serve in the legions 2e Rep. I’ve been smoking for 5 years but stopped yesterday and cut the alcohol as well because I’m serious about joining. Do you have to be top of the class to get picked for 2e rep at the end of training ? If so, how long would you recommend training before joining the Legion ? Assuming I’m starting for scratch. I want be top of the class when I get there and would really like to get 2e rep. Thank you, Thomas !
Semper Fidelis and Vive La Legion! Proud to stand should to shoulder with Legionnaires! Did you know they part of “La Legion Marche” at the USMC Birthday Ball Ceremony?
Guten Tag, mon Adjutant! Many thanks for your fascinating and insightful videos; you give me a real sense of life in the Legion and the emotions that you felt during your time there. I love the picture of you on the beach in Calvi at 2:52! Did you know Rory Young, a Zambian who was in the REP in 1989-1994? He finished second in the selection and para training, and ended up in the SML.
Thomas, je ne sais si tu es Français ou pas donc j'écris en Anglais. My father served 27 months in a combat unit of the 1er Régiment Etranger de Cavalerie, based in Sidi-Bel-Abbes in Algeria. He was born there. When he was drafted, he made it to Saumur and finished 3rd best of the promotion, then had the choice to go where he wanted. He chose the Legion, in Algeria. At that time, most of the Legionnaires were ex Waffen SS on the run, Oustachi and very heavy combat experienced men...commanded by my father who was a mere Aspirant Lieutenant who had never seen fighting. He was 21 years old. There was no money involved at that time when the men were choosing to get in the Légion. As you know, for most of them it was a place to start a new life, to find a new family when they had lost all their loved ones. And it was a place to become a respected man if you could make it out alive after the war, and find great job opportunities in the civil life. I got your point about the salary (and of course about the action part if one wants to play the game with the grim reaper). But in my opinion you should present things more in a way that attracts people from any country in the world differently. More like joining La Légion is becoming part of a true family of honorable men. The money they can make is, of course, very important to help their families (if/when they still have any) but it's nothing compared to being part of a very special corps of army that is respected worldwide. Anyway, congratulations on the efforts you put in making this video. CAMERONE!
Also Sir I was wondering towards the later part of your career in the 2 Rep what did you do in the regiment like where you still able to go on missions, did you teach or where you instructor? Im curious because I'm 27 now and if I make the french foreign legion a career I'll be 44 when I retire.
Thomas, my friend, i write a email to you, in your blog, but i dont have response, sure do you dont receive, i see all your videos, im going to the legion in october, very motivated, physically and mentally, only doubt in the space test. Greetings from Argentina. Fernando.

Don’t get LASIK, I am about to get PRK done, LASIK disqualifies you from Halo and scuba in most military’s and elevate units won’t like like you have a flap that can get dislodged with LASIK

Thanks for your motivational video, am from Malawi and I can't hardly speak any French word but I really want to join the Legion especially the 2nd Regiment. Do I need to attend French lessons prior to joining or I will learn the language the moment I got pick up? will greatly appreciate your advice and everything
Hello I'm from China. I don't know much English! I use the translation APP to leave a message to you! It's not easy for me to see your video. I'm a military enthusiast... I want to find out what the dark patch on the right shoulder of 2REP looks like? I didn't see a lot of video! Can you help me? Thank you very much.
Ici mom ami..... c'est la verite! We lost 220 US Marines and a total of 241 with some US Army, Airforce, and Navy personnel and I am sure some CIA based out of the barracks..... I was such a young teenager..... but always will be a US Marine. Semper Fidelis to the FFL.... great bunch of bad asses! On October 23, 1983, two truck bombs struck buildings in Beirut, Lebanon, housing American and French service members of the Multinational Force in Lebanon (MNF), a military peacekeeping operation during the Lebanese Civil War. The attack killed 307 people: 241 U.S. and 58 French military personnel, six civilians, and two attackers. Minutes later, a second suicide bomber struck the nine-story Drakkar building, a few kilometers away, where the French contingent was stationed; 55 paratroopers from the 1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment and three paratroopers of the 9th Parachute Chasseur Regiment were killed and 15 injured. It was the single worst French military loss since the end of the Algerian War.[8] The wife and four children of a Lebanese janitor at the French building were also killed, and more than twenty other Lebanese civilians were injured.[9]
@BobsAndVegane That's why you do have safety officers, but sometimes they don't get there fast enough, and in some situation, impossible to come to you. For example, when it comes to parachuting, the possibility of accidents is high, it really comes down to the individuals involved to untangle themselves or separate. Nobody will come to solve the situation for you, and if you get a "Roman Cradle", good luck! They drill you again and again on the things you should do to avoid or solve the situations, but at the end of the day it's up to you and luck. Dick Varga also made an example, which reminded me of a time when légionnaires in Afghanistan were killed when their vehicle rolled over, and it wasn't in combat.
Thomas Gast thanks for the reply Sir i know theres only like 8000 legionaires but I had no idea the GCP was that small of a group I'm guessing the GCM mountain commando group is the same way? So is the GCP stationed in calvi too?
Guten Tag Herr Gast Ich wollte sie fragen darf man auch zu der Fremdenlegion wenn man vorher bei der Bundeswehr wahr und ob es von vorteil ist ? Mit freundlichen Grüßen Herr ...
Thank you sir for the videos.. Im am very interested in joining FFL however when i arrive in france i will just turn 39.. Do do they except 39 or is it to late? Thank you again

Thank you for this video!!! I'm training my paliers to get it, and this motivate me

Greetings sir. Please, does the legion recruit in both December and January?
Thank you sir Gast for this video. Is it true that Legionnaires in 2REP have to shave their armpits?

Thomas, will Laser eye surgery affect my chances of joining 2nd REP?
Don’t get LASIK, I am about to get PRK done, LASIK disqualifies you from Halo and scuba in most military’s and elevate units won’t like like you have a flap that can get dislodged with LASIK
Well done camarade .. Great clip.

Hello Thomas
Have you seen, yesterday a légionnaire died in training
Do death happend frequently in the legion in training ?
Oscar Hernandez I saw it in the news
Training results in injuries & deaths, esp in a parachute regiment, sometimes a vehicle overturns , accidents happen .
@BobsAndVegane They try not to let that happen, but the nature of the job is dangerous, accidents do happen more often in those circumstances.
@BobsAndVegane That's why you do have safety officers, but sometimes they don't get there fast enough, and in some situation, impossible to come to you.
For example, when it comes to parachuting, the possibility of accidents is high, it really comes down to the individuals involved to untangle themselves or separate. Dick Varga also made an example, which reminded me of a time when légionnaires in Afghanistan were killed when their vehicle rolled over, and it wasn't in combat.
Im just curious being that you were in the 2 rep for 15 years how come you never became apart of the GCP assault commandos?

What are the requirements or test to qualify for 2'REP, PARATROOPERS.
My dream is to join the foreign legion. But for some reason I have a mentality that becoming a parachutist is to loose respect for your own life. You probably put your whole life in the hands of a car every day, so don't worry. :)
I am going to join the French foreign legion. What is your email so I can ask you questions about what I'm going to need to be prepared.
Is your book published in English?
Salut Thomas, how do you become an officer in the legion
almost have to be a regular French officer born in France or a French citizen. Legionnaires can rise to officer rank but not beyond company grade...but odds are you won't go beyond Sgt in 15 hard years.
