This is honesty one of my favorites. I've always wanted to mess around with this and make a savory version with gin, basil, and san marzano tomatoes, kinda like a caprese salad but in a cocktail.
You could try to make a blender muddled version of it (as described in Dave Arnolds "Liquid Intelligence". Basically blend together everything except the sirup and then strain, add sirup and shake. Makes for a super green drink, literally the colour of basil.
This has become my favorite post gardening coctail by far! It's so refreshing. My wife who doesn't like bitterness at all likes herse with vodka instead of gin also! So many thanks for this video!
This is one of my favorite gin cocktails. This, and the Gordon's Cup. Sadly, in Canada, they kept the training wheels on the Beefeater, and insult us with the 40% abv version.
Just last week I was thinking about suggesting this cocktail eventually, and here it is! Hamburg is actually my home town, so I've had it at the bar where it was invented. It would be tough to find a better summer drink tbh. Great cocktail!
There is a cocktail kind of similar to this in a way. It's the 'Southside' instead of basil it uses mint shaken with gin lime juice and simple syrup. It's kind of the same idea I guess. Really fresh and delicious cocktail
Leandro. Don’t worry about smiling so much or changing your show based on comments. Just be yourself! I like your channel for the content not the over the top personality
I absolutely love the Eastside with the cucumber and I've stumbled upon this but it isn't the weekend yet so I can't make it. Would I love this as well?
I find the fact people bust your balls on touching your ice with your hands touching your hair and or face.. the way I see these videos is a tutorial how to make a cocktail at your house for friends and family. Missing link to the ice knife. Must I use my fingers to search it 😭. Also, making this tonight. Looks like an amazing combo. Going to try with a B-day present from a friend Boxer Gin.
Love it! Added more basil and reduced the sugar syrup. Letting the basil steep in the gin for a few minutes also helps. Thanks for the awesome content.
I love love love this cocktail. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance do get one served by Joerg Meyer. Maybe I should drive those 400km and visit his bar :D Leandro, his name is difficult to pronounce for americans. it would be more like "york mayer". That comes closest to the german pronunciation. :)

My parents visited Le Lion with two friends. Interestingly they were highly unimpressed with service, atmosphere and the drink (was way too sour). Wasn't there myself though, so I can't confirm their experience.
First off, it's "fresh", not "sour". Americans are known for oversweetening everything and Jörg Meyer is known to like his drinks on the fresh side. So if you know anything at all about bar culture you'll expect the drinks in his bar to be on the fresh side as well. But that's where the problem lies because "Americans" and "knowing anything" usually doesn't mix. Secondly, if you come to Germany acting like the regular American tourist (i.e. loud, entitled, utterly ignorant yet expecting to be treated like the Chinese Emperor) then you're in for a surprise. We don't do small talk here, we don't sugar coat, and we don't brown-nose. The Le Lion has repeatedly been recognized as one of the best bars in the world and the team surely doesn't have to suck up to everybody. Professional courtesy is a given on that level, and anything beyond that is earned. Plus, service personnell are paid actual wages here so nobody has to put up with poor behaviour for tips. That's why you go abroad, to experience different cultures. Can't handle that, stay at home. Germany is being overrun by useless foreigners with a faulty attitude as it is.
Honestly I’ve never had a problem with crystals forming in 1:1 simple syrup it can be a problem with syrups that are a little thicker with higher sugar ratios. I don’t see the problem with using it though, it may give a tangy taste when used in syrup but honestly I haven’t tried it so don’t know for sure
I'll be sure to make that one this summer when my basil get a little thicker. Maybe you said it, but I missed it, but what type of basil are you using?
Interested to see the ripping of the basil. My only experience with muddling herbs is mint for mojitos and I always heard that you shouldn't shred the mint while muddling because it will get too vegetal. Is this just a basil thing or is it personal preference?
You can rip basil in half before adding to a tin without getting vegetal notes. When pressing with a muddler to release the essence it's easier to extract too much plant flavor. When you shake the cocktail it'll rip the basil or mint anyway. The trick is to not press too hard, that's when you get those vegetal notes.
Oh man, this is one of my faves, but I didn't know it was a real thing until about a year ago. I wish I could pin down the first time I made one, as it had to be right around the time Herr Meyer created the official version, but oblivious me was just kicking around the house, hankering for a mojito, yet having none of the things that go into it. My mom claiming that basil is related to mint is pretty much the only reason I accidentally wound up with this drink in my hand, and I'm so glad Herr Meyer finessed the specs so I can enjoy a perfected version now.
Made this drink yesterday after seeing your video, really simple and refreshing! Altough I always seem to find the lemon juice overpowering in most recipes and being too tard, maybe it's something about the (grocery store) lemons here in Belgium :p Tried faceting my own clear ice cube into a diamond, will have to practice that :D

How'd you think this drink would be with a few more basil leaves and raspberry syrup. Garnished with basil and raspberry. I think it'd be awesome
Cheers, just made it along with you. Definitely crushable!!
I make a version of this but use a pineapple simple syrup. The combination of gin, lemon juice, pineapple and basil is very good.

just got back from hamburg germany, went to visit le lion bar and they do it with like a 20 basil leaves and 70ml of gin. ^^
OK, finally got some fresh basil to make it: INSANE DRINK. THANKS
My basil plant is ready, so I know what I’ll be making this week
nice
What can I add more of if I feel like the Gin portion is making the drink feel too alcoholic? more Lemon or more Simple Syrup?
It was pretty recent that I first had this drink. Now basil rarely survives long enough to become pesto in my house. I really love this drink.

@@TheEducatedBarfly nice! Thanks to working from home my weekend can start at Friday noon. I'll definitely let you know how much I liked it!

Those vine ripe tomatoes in the background are making me think of coming up with some sorta tomato bramble cocktail recipe
😋🍅🍸
Are there actually any coctails that use fresh tomatoes? The acidity and earthiness could really work well I think.

Since this a smash style cocktail, would it also work to serve with crushed ice? Or does the big block of ice pair better with this cocktail?
AFAIK the Joerg Meyer recipe calls for two handful of basil. Colour needs to be green!
That is how I made mine too. I would be curious to try it with less though as fresh basil is expensive here, especially during the winter.
I made this and Gordon's cup yesterday. Both are some of my favorite gin cocktails, only second to Zahav's Israeli Salad Cocktail.
Do you have the recipe for the Salat Cocktail?

It would be perfect! Lime juice is better than lemon juice
what is your stance upon using Cream of tartar (Potassium bitartrate) in simple syrups to deter crystal growth?
