Hello Tom! This is Billy T Midnight and thank you for being a part of my recording project back in 1997 at Emerald Sound Studios with John Guess. Those days were the highlight of my music career and I was dumbfounded to record with Brent, Glenn, Eddie, Matt, Paul, Larry and others. I am proud and grateful for your’s, and everyone that put their soul and talents in my project. That CD, that though officially has no name, I call it “The Purple Album” is on Spotify if you ever want to give it a listen. I had to give up my music career back in 1999 after getting hurt at work as a school bus mechanic but I will never forget or regret my attempts at “trying to make it.” Be well and God bless bless brother.
Hey Buko. Great shit as always! Thanks so much for letting us in on the hang. Quick lost gear story for the HomeSkoolers: I had just finished a gig during wintertime and was loading out in a snow covered parking lot. I leaned my two Custom Shop Teles against the passenger’s side door of my car, went to close the back hatch of my car, got in the driver’s side and pulled out. About 40 minutes later I pulled into my driveway and looked at the seat next to me expecting to see my guitars only to see an empty space. It was then I realized I had driven off with them still leaned up against the side of my car. I was about to speed back to the club but decided to run inside my house and just as I did the phone rang. It was my drummer. “Hey Dipshit! Lose anything tonight?” he asked. “Yes! I think my guitars are either lying in the parking lot in pieces from being driven over or they’re gone!” I answer. “Nope! I got ‘em ya loser! I saw you drive off and I grabbed them” I was so relieved I almost pissed myself. It was then I learned that one “idiot check” after a show was not enough. Now I do at least two. Your pal in Boston, Darin
I’m watching this and thinking you couldn’t get a studio, producer, director, film crew etc. to capture this candid magic. Only Buk hand holding his phone and getting the greats to let their guard down sharing stories and laughs. Solid gold! 🙏
Great to see Brent in an interview!! He and brother Randy befriended me while I was in Nashville because I just showed up there when my younger brother Brian Steele was killed in a motorcycle accident and I packed up everything and left New Mexico to take care of his affairs!! Brent was extremely helpful by not only showing me stuff on guitar and then by gifting me a PRS Brent Mason Model because ever since I saw it I wanted to get one!! It's still my number one!! His brother Randy would let me sit in with the Music City Playboys!! The whole Mason family were a blessing to me while I was there! I miss Nashville and all my friends and the musicians that were so kind to me during a tough time!!!
If anything, the praise that Bryan Sutton gave to Brent was an understatement, but I was so happy to hear it. If you turn on late 80s/90s country and listen for 30 minutes, you'll hear Brent's playing on 27 of those minutes. That guy is truly amazing. Thanks, Uncle Larry for one of your best episodes yet!
@@dutchi15 Here are some top suggestions (not in any order) with some GREAT Brent Mason playing. o Alan Jackson (Mercury Blues, Chattahooche, Who's Cheatin' Who, and many, many others) o Shania Twain (Love Gets Me Every Time) o Tanya Tucker (It's a Little Too Late - the beginning riff is killer) o Brooks & Dunn (the classic solo on Neon Moon, plus pretty much every other B&D song, like the beginning to Hard Workin' Man) o Other Gems from Wayde Hayes (Old Enough to Know Better) and David Lee Murphy (Dust on the Bottle) o Many George Strait songs (I like Lovebug) o Too many others to mention, but this list above is a good taste - enjoy!
Holy moly Lenny Breau can’t believe you guys mentioned him. I saw Lenny perform dozens of times back in the day in Toronto in Yorkville and George’s spaghetti factory and one concert just my girlfriend me and a photographer. Lenny was a genius. Jerry Donahue was a big fan too! Thanks guys
As a young guy I was lucky enough to hook up with a couple of NY studios and pick up some sessions. It became apparent that wasn’t going to sustain my family doing sessions and I got a job and put the guitar down. I heard about these cats but never had the kind of peek into their world back then. I’m really appreciative of your channel for things like this! I retired right after Covid, discovered your channel and returned to the guitar. I play for the joy of playing and get the occasional opportunity to record without worrying where the rent money is coming from! Thanks again!
Brent did a PRS workshop in Montana in 2015, drove 8 hours to be there. Waited until PRS dudes had wandered off and he was just standing there looking bored, ripped off my best poor rendition of Hot Wired, Brent yelled at me “hey, knock that off”. Ha ha ha ha One of the best memories of my life!! Pretty certain he would not remember that🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 He did buy a ‘the dude’ pedal in Music Vila that day!! Wonder if it’s the same one?? This video is pretty much the best thing ever!! Been a big fan of homeskoolin’!!
I checked out "Avenue of Love" by David Gates. Brent's riffs of that tune are the kind that raise the hairs on your neck (best music feeling). Thanks for the window into the wonderful world of these great Nashville studio players.
Went to HS school with Bryan. His dad was actually my history teacher and a well versed musician himself. Bryan was destined for this. He had more miles on a guitar in 12th grade than most do in a lifetime. Brent has been my main influence since 1992. Love the video Buk!
What people do not realize is that if you walk down the street in Nashville...you will hear some amazing players playing 80's hits to tourists...to be at the level of Mr. Mason, Mr. Sutton, or Uncle Larry.....you have to be Uber exceptional... Thanks BUK!!!
That was very special, Tom! Thanks Bryan and Brent. Still kills me that we're in your kitchen one day, and then in the studio or on stage with legends - and I like them all equally. Take care. 😎
Thank you for this video, Uncle Larry! It’s awesome to see/hear all of this. You asked excellent questions. I met Brent back in 2016 when I played in a band called Reverie Lane. He, Glen Worf, and Paul Leim came in to listen to us/help us with some arrangements. They were all wonderful dudes! Cool to hear Brent mentioning David Hungate as well. I have been playing some shows with his son Noah recently. A cool cat. 😎
its amazing to see to whom cats like you look up to. you should always keep that in mind, so its the best way not to get arrogant. Somewhere out there is always waiting somebody who is better, faster or whatever than you. once i heard an interview with verdine adams white. he talked about taking lessons and the interviewer was astonished and asked for the name! yeah, he said, its ron carter! that rose a wide smile on my face!
This is so great man, as usual. I play in Tanya Tuckers band since 2015, I made a little video of that lick, at least what I’m pretty sure it is ha. We all play it in unison now just for fun. I love that BM doesn’t remember it now, understandable since the amount of licks have become standard now. Cheers!
I was beaming like crazy the whole time I was watching this video. It's pure heaven hearing my favorite legendary session guitar guys talking about guitar related stuff for nearly half an hour. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Uncle Larry (and Earl and Jim 🤣). I believe this channel will be of historical significance to guitarists far into the future. I've personally been inspired more than you could know.
Hell yea, fckn Peavey Special 130! I plugged into one several years ago and thought it sounded great, I have two of them now. Lots of versatility in that EQ section. Plus Peavey is like the cockroach Swiss army knife of gear.
Over the past 30+ years, how many songs have we heard and loved that these guys played on... and at the time, we might not even have known it was them. So great to hear from those who have brought us so much great music. Thanks Tom.
I bought a Hot Wired pedal used from a store because I wanted a Wampler pedal...the thing is my go to fosho for a small pedal board...you only need to add a delay and a tuner thru a good amp and you good to go...and a Boss EQ pedal!
Brent's played so many good licks its hard for him to remember them, its like George Strait trying to remember every single word to every single #1 hit he's had at the drop of a dime lol
Uncle Larry strikes again and with a vengeance, pure Gold....Thanks Tom, it's always a delight when you take us into the studio and get to listen in on the 3 legends of Nashville...
Big thanks to all 3 of you for not only taking the time, but also for enjoying each other's companionship/camaraderie. I just celebrated my 60th anniversary of playing guitar (retired pro)and really enjoyed this particular "hang"!
THANK YOU! Episodes like this are the best. Brent qualified why I tell younger players not to tie all their patch cables down...Looks great, BUT there will come that day, in the middle of a gig, or just before, when a patch cable goes out and you need to find which one it is real fast.
Back in my TNN days we used to get off work at Nashville Now and go see Brent play in this club off Murfreesboro Road. I remember telling Chet Atkins he needs to go see this guy...
This stuff truly is a treasure that we can all watch for years to come. May just seem like an odd conversation to these guys but very interesting to people/fans like me. Especially since I’m a huge bluegrass and country fan. Brent has been my hero for decades and I’ve also followed every guitar player Skaggs ever had closely. These guys are legends whether they realize it or not. Thanks so much for sharing.
Tom- it’s funny, it REALLY resonated with me as a musician living and playing in DES MOINES, Iowa- you were saying when guys ask if they should move to Nashville, you said “because you can’t get anything going in Des Moines” which, honestly- you’re absolutely right and I’ve wanted to make the transition to Nashville for quite some time. It is hard here to get anything REALLY going and off of the ground as far as making it past the normal bar circuits here. I just wanted to let you know how such a passing comment you made had such a big striking impact on me! It was one of those “oh whoa…that’s wild 😳” moments for me for sure. Thanks for all you do, Uncle Larry!
I've known about Brent for about 20 years, but I just realized that he looks a lot like Eddie Van Halen. Twenty years ago he did a clinic at this guitar camp I was attending in Nashville. I sat about 8 feet from him while his brother played rhythm and he just ripped his ass off. I asked him to sign my Tele on the spot. He was like, "Are you sure man?" I said "Hell yes I'm sure!" He's one of the most mind blowing players I've ever seen. Ever.
I've had the pleasure of learning some Brent solos note for note over the years, they unbelievably difficult. The bending is so precise along with the movement all over the neck. Just one of the best of all time. Mercury Blues is one of my favorites.

I love how the person who made up the riff doesn’t remember but the other two players do 😂😂😂 So cool! Thanks for sharing!
That was my favorite part. Stream of consciousness.
Thanks Brian for remembering the riff. Now no one will ever forget it ! So sick

Great interview Larry. Cheers! Love Brent’s playing. He’s a legend. And THANKS to Brent for putting up with you.
Bryan’s okay too.
Maybe we're not(good enough)!! 🤣😂🤣 These guys are awesome! Thanks for the share Unc!!

Always interesting, never boring. Thanks Uncle Larry...
You see fellas this is the shit. The enthusiasm is real
Awesome! Love it!
I really appreciate how genuinely curious you are, Tom.
Fuckin A dude - Brent’s tele is rode hard and put away wet! I love all the stories.

I agree with all these comments. Great to hear these funny and interesting histories.
Thanks Uncle Lazza
This is gold! Unbelievably valuable, these kind of behind the scenes videos. You made the entire internet feel like they’re hanging with the cool cats. Thanks Tom!
Two of my all time favorites being interviewed by Uncle Larry. Such a treat, thanks!
This is awesome. Thanks Tom
RIP Robbie Robertson. Another giant oak has fallen.
Brent IS the Jimmy Page of country music....
Hmmm " makes a distortion sound " that cracked me up.. 😂 legend..
Man, Brent is painfully humble lol but I guess that's what drives you to be that great . And as always Bryan seems like a great hang. Two very down to earth LEGENDS!
That lick from Brent that Bryan Sutton was trying to remember was the solo from ,'Calling Your Name' from Ricky Skaggs
Just a second….
Brent Mason is having Bryan Sutton show ‘skoolers Brent Mason’s licks.
Do I have that straight?
🤩
Thanks, Tom.
Damn dude that was freakin awesome stuff Buk thanks guys Brian and Bret for your amazing talents and inspiration over the years ...👍😎
geez talk about a bonus. you are too good to us Buk. thank you so much for everything.
great thanks to Mr. Mason and Mr. Sutton as well.
Damn. In the presence of greatness. 3 of my heroes all in the same room juss shootin the chit. Absolutely fuggin awesome.
