I am a Civil Engineer who worked over three years on the bridge. No one has mentioned that there are four "Dolphins". The "Dolphins" are 25 Feet diameter bumpers designed to protect the two main piers from collisions. The Dali passed the protective bumper in front of the pier and then veered right directly into the main pier. It makes me suspicious.

This was an accident because of a poorly maintained ship owned by a company looking to increase their margins in spite of safety. Bringing up racism and the way a mayor looks is hilarious. Yeah, from the videos look strange the way the section to the far right broke away from the supports that far away from point of impact, the way the whole bridge fell looks strange to me, looks like someone pulled one bolt from the structure and every thing fell in uninnision!!! Looks like it was engineered to collapse like this but I am not a licensed engineer!! A ship of that magnitude would be impossible to stop with in short distance, I don't know anything about large ships but I would imagine it would take over a mile or two to stop a ship this size!!!

Thank the Lord it was decided to replace the whole thing after realizing "patching" it with a new section wasn't such a great idea. What I couldn't understand about that one was that the ship had traveled that route before. Luckily the traffic on the bridge stopped before going off.
When the rushed up patch was finished our great Senator Mitch McConnell deemed it safe again. Many of us wanted to see him drive over it a few times before we got on it.

It seems like you have a beef with Senator McConnell and you are using this to disparage him. If indeed he "deemed it safe again", I expect that was based on engineering reports from licensed professional engineers, not just his opinion. He is not qualified to make such a determination on his own, and I am confident he did not.

I am an engineer. This was a cantilever bridge.. The actual structure supporting the roadway is a series of triangles which had more then sufficient ability to support the estimated traffic load with a factor of safety. This structure is most probably supported on the columns on rollers and sliding support members. These members allow the bridge to flex due to shifting loads, temperature shifts, seismic loads and vibrations. The structure is also balanced with the mass of the load being a small fraction of structures weight. Well after one column was thrown out of alignment the supported structure failed. After the initial failure the other spans were off balance so there was a cascade failure.

May all the victims rest in piece, and to the families that lost love ones, you are in America's prayers. This accident will keep the port of Baltimore closed for some time.

The type of explosive being used on the bridge supports appears to be similar to the properties of Thermite. From Wikipedia: " Thermite is a pyrotechnic composition of metal powder and metal oxide. When ignited by heat or chemical reaction, thermite undergoes an exothermic reduction-oxidation reaction. Most varieties are not explosive, but can create brief bursts of heat and high temperature in a small area." This was why there was no detonation heard. Instead of a shattering effect like C4, RDX or Petin; Thermite gives off a sizzling sound and burns hot enough to melt steel. As an example, Thermite was used in the D-Day Normandy landings where U.S. Army Rangers found the artillery the Germans had moved inland by about a mile from their original revetments. The Rangers used Thermite grenades to burnout the barrels of those cannons.

I am a retired engineer. I just want to comment on the statements being made that there appear to be detonations happening at points within the bridge structure. I've examined the videos, in slo-mo and stop-action, and with magnification. What I see looks to me like thick clouds of dust, mostly composed of corrosion products, being ignited by sparks generated by the moving steel being dryly rubbed together with great force and friction. It's common knowledge that even organic dust in high concentrations is explosive (grain silos, ship's hold loading operations), and metallic oxides (rust) are a basic component of solid rocket fuel. A thick cloud of rust, old paint, and dirt - concentrated around pinned or bolted joints or riveted truss plates being torn apart - would be expected to flash off and then disappear, exactly as seen - as the cloud burned itself out and also dissipated. The key sign however, that these are not pre-emptive detonations, is that they don't appear until after the structure has begun to collapse.

    Hi,
The first thing that should be done to investigate this incident is for the investigators to draw up a precise route (GPS) of this ship once it departed from the last port. This process is normal for every registered ship. Once we have this information, investigators can do detailed calculations, give the speed of the ship, and the flow rate of the water plotting exact details of power loss. If this process is followed, a clear picture will develop to the actual cause. You raised a very, very interesting point about that. It looked like a charge went off , very strange?

I have watched many many Giant Lake freighters pass through the Welland Canal. They bypass Niagara Falls and bring the ships from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. When a ship starts moving from a dead stop when leaving a lock it bellows black Smoke from the Exhaust Stacks because the captain has the hammer down so as to get it moving. When it gets up to Canal cruising speed heading to the next lock the black smoke stops bellowing from the stacks. Same as back in the day when a loaded transport truck started from a dead start. Black Smoke billowed from the truck's stacks so as to get it up to speed. I know because I was a long haul driver. The amount of black smoke billowing from the Dali's stacks shows the ship had the hammer down so as to move as fast as possible to cause the greatest amount of damage when it hit the bridge support.

The zoomed in video of the ship sharply turning towards the pillar is really eye opening. If the intent is to take out our logistics and infrastructure then this would be a great place to start. Most modern bridges today are a combination of several different basic engineering designs. The opposite ends of the Francis Scott Keys bridge are what are called beam bridge sections, which are simply post and beam construction. The posts are the verticle piers that hold up the horizontal beams. Those beams are boxes of steel trusses (triangular structures) with the roadbed on top. Taking out one beam will not cause the rest of the beam bridge to collapse. The center of this bridge combined a cantilever and arch design. Cantilever sections of bridges are built like the capital letter T. The center pier is built and then the arms on both sides are built at the same time. If one arm is built without the same weight placed on the opposite arm of the T, the T will always fall to the heavy side. The very center span is a truss arch with suspender cables holding the roadbed below. One half of the arch is one arm of the cantilever T on the right side of the bridge and the other half is an arm of the T on the left side of the bridge. When the ship took out the cantilever pier on the left, both sides of that T fell into the water. The T on the right side of the bridge fell into the water on the right side of the right T. No detonation happened! That is exactly what happens to a cantilever when the base pier of the T is removed. This was totally the ship's fault, the failure had nothing to do with the design of the bridge. No cantilever bridge is strong enough to take a direct hit to a pier and remain standing. When thousands of tons of steel have no support, gravity will bring them down at a speed of 32 feet per second, per second. Notice the beam ends of the bridge are still standing, Just the center cantilevers fell.

You're letting yourself get alarmed by the word "deficiencies". You can take it from a seasoned Systems Engineer - ANY large system will have problems of various kinds from time to time. Deficiency reports - and I've dealt with many - are used to identify the defects and undertake corrections. Things get fixed, things break again. It happens to ships, electronic systems, aircraft (doors most recently), and YES, even to bridges. Remember, the repair crew was fixing potholes - if the bridge was perfect in every way that wouldn't have been necessary, right? Wrong. Normal operations and wear-and-tear are common aspects of system operations that SE's have to deal with throughout the life of any system. What is key - and this is where things like door problems on planes come in - is how quickly the root causes are identified, repaired, verified/tested, and monitored. If you'd like more examples, look up FMECA analysis or consult a good life-cycle engineering plan.
I'm not ready to rule out anything, including terrorism (unlike our rush-to-judgment morons in joe's admin), but this may just be a case of key things going wrong at the worst possible time and with insufficient margins to allow any meaningful corrective action. Let's see what the ship data recorders say.

I have used that bridge almost on a daily basis. It’s a 47 year old bridge. It is so high up. No matter what safety measures on that bridge may have, that ship was a 200 million tons and as big as the Empire State Building. The crew actually saved many lives calling out the May Day. That bridge has about 30,000 cars daily.

And it just makes me wonder has this been going on for some time with other ships but this time it didn't fly. I hope due to this calamity that operations with these cargo ships will bring about checks and inspections to the tee. Because just possibly for some time ships have been coming and going without incident and not being checked for existing problems. America is laxed and at ease in areas where we shouldn't be the leader of this country need to address the nation on matters so that we be aware of our surroundings or to say that we're focused. This could have very well been a terrorist attack with a lot more damage and lastly we need to put our thinking cap back on so this does not happen again.
