It looks like most of the vehicles that went into the water were police or emergency response vehicles and they were already blocking traffic so that probably saved many lives. Not dismissing the importance of those lives, I pray they are okay and if not peace for the families.

Do you ever get that feeling where your most inner thoughts and fears happen in real life?
I had a mental health appointment today so last night, around 1am in Australia, I started thinking back to dreams and nightmares that I had as a younger man.
My main nightmare was plunging into the water, in a car, from a great height, being unable to escape before waking up. I thought about that one nightmare for quite a while before eventually drifting off at daybreak.
I see this report today and my heart sinks into my gut. Life really does play cruel tricks on those who don't deserve it. Those, poor terrified people

What really disturbs me is the fact that in the 70s, this bridge was constructed for $60 million and there was no consideration for protecting these piles from what is obviously a port area. For less than 1% of that cost, a canal barrier could have been built on each side. Much rather had seen a collision a hundred or two yards out, instead of the main support of this bridge.

Unfortunately many of them probably got crushed by the overhead steel beams. But those who didn't, would have been terrified as they sunk deeper and deeper into the dark, cold abyss.
Assuming their cars fell facing upwards (which is unlikely) it's possible their seatbelts could be undone, but most modern seatbelts lock if the car is upside down or on its side. The airbags also almost certainly deployed, probably knocking some of them out.
Truth be told, if you did manage to survive all that and your car was in tact survival is slightly possible (as long as no water is coming in) but the chances of that happening are so low, almost zero.
It's almost not a search and rescue anymore. It's a recovery operation.

There's a lot of space, atleast if there's a malfunction like this, then are just in the middle betweek two stands? So sorry for the family and love ones of the people who died. Praying for strength during this difficult time🙏🙏🙏😢

Amazing how the engine funnels are belching smoke right up to the point of impact even when the lights are off and we were told the ship had no propulsion during that time. Amazing how that ship made a right turn directly into the support seconds before the impact. Amazing how the last two minutes before hitting the bridge support the ships data recorder just happened to be deleted. Amazing how we were told this ship was operating normally up until just a few moments before the collision Amazing how this ship was a half mile from the main channel if it lost power just before the impact. Just amazing!

After crashing through mountain pond ice to rescue two dogs, I can attest that the "7 minutes" does NOT mean you can even function that long. As an EMT, I was betting all on that 7 minutes. However, I crashed in all the way to the bottom 12 feet down. On pushing back up, it was like watching a dream. Dogs got yanked out only because some brain cell remained. Steep bottom; I was back in thigh-high ice water and took ALL my strength and power just to stumble out of it. Est under 5 minutes tops.
