Could you imagine if this has happened at 7am? Seven people missing is seven too many, but my goodness, you'd be talking probably hundreds dead.
True this could have been much worse.
This is no comfort for the seven peoples family
I seriously dobut they will be supported
True that’s sad that happen to seven people. I don’t know if they’re alive or dead but if that happened earlier in the day. It would’ve been way worse.
It looks like most of the vehicles that went into the water were police or emergency response vehicles and they were already blocking traffic so that probably saved many lives. Not dismissing the importance of those lives, I pray they are okay and if not peace for the families.
@@hannahdyson7129this is america, the cargo company will pay for damages and loss of life.
Just be honest. Survivability is not challenging, survivability is impossible after 6 hours in that frigid water.
It's not impossible. There are cases (although extremely rare) of people surviving in insane conditions. Someone can also be out of water and amidst the rubble.
That's why we usually keep searching far longer than the survivability estimates.
Between the impact of falling that far, the temperature of the water, the difficulty of escaping a sinking car even under good conditions, the unlikelihood of passing ships at that hour... every survivor would be an absolute miracle.
Final destination 6 confirmed

Do you ever get that feeling where your most inner thoughts and fears happen in real life?
I had a mental health appointment today so last night, around 1am in Australia, I started thinking back to dreams and nightmares that I had as a younger man.
My main nightmare was plunging into the water, in a car, from a great height, being unable to escape before waking up. I thought about that one nightmare for quite a while before eventually drifting off at daybreak.
I see this report today and my heart sinks into my gut. Life really does play cruel tricks on those who don't deserve it. Those, poor terrified people

This needs to be a hard lesson around the country.. We are more vulnerable to devastation than we think. Protect the bridges, and examine other infrastructures that may be vulnerable or even outdated
Indeed we have a LOT Of very old outdated infrastructure in the US, particularly rusty old bridges and shipping has increased rapidly in the last 50 years in both size and volume....this will happen again, you can bet on it.
There's no such thing as a bridge that can withstand a collision from a 1000' cargo ship...
This is not about aging infrastructure, no bridge is designed to withstand the impact of what is essentially the Empire State building hitting it
It's a freight ship.. Ain't no engineer going to protect you from that.

If I drove across a bridge daily, I'd keep a window breaking device in the car now.
Do you think a window breaking device makes any difference after a 185' fall?
I heard they don't work on newer cars because of the laminate on the windows. It will break but not shatter open.
@@fantabuloussnuffaluffagus yes. if you are strapped in when you hit the water
Most newer vehicles have laminated glass on the side windows similar to your windshield. Designed not to shatter so your best bet is to just roll your window down and crawl out.
Yeah those don’t do anything to car windows now a days lol plus imagine trying to search around your car for a little window breaker while you’re car is filling up with water
What really disturbs me is the fact that in the 70s, this bridge was constructed for $60 million and there was no consideration for protecting these piles from what is obviously a port area. For less than 1% of that cost, a canal barrier could have been built on each side. Much rather had seen a collision a hundred or two yards out, instead of the main support of this bridge.
Kudos to the ship crew who alerted the local authorities in time so that they were able to close the bridge! Just imagine the causalities otherwise

I can't imagine what those drivers went through as the bridge collapsed. Saying prayers for all the people and families affected this morning 😢
The bridge was closed to traffic, because the ship was able to warn the police in time. Sadly, eight construction workers were not able to get off of the bridge in time.
Unfortunately many of them probably got crushed by the overhead steel beams. But those who didn't, would have been terrified as they sunk deeper and deeper into the dark, cold abyss.
Assuming their cars fell facing upwards (which is unlikely) it's possible their seatbelts could be undone, but most modern seatbelts lock if the car is upside down or on its side. The airbags also almost certainly deployed, probably knocking some of them out.
Truth be told, if you did manage to survive all that and your car was in tact survival is slightly possible (as long as no water is coming in) but the chances of that happening are so low, almost zero.
It's almost not a search and rescue anymore. It's a recovery operation.

“Just a ship” hitting a pilon? Are you kidding me? The force generated from a ship that big is unstoppable
Huge ship plus all of that cargo. I doubt there is a pillar in the world that could withstand that momentum.
Solution is called reinforced concrete pylon base (pier) guard which protrude out of bridge line and serves as plastic collision damper, to deform ship hull not the standing structure. Ask dutch engineers how to make one, they know.... or make a new bridge using 2x4 this time as cheapest option in a busy maritime port.
I left out a little giggle at that stupid comment also. Wonder how much force a ship like that generates? Not a single pylon on this planet can withstand that.

I dont know why people are confused, If a 150,000 ton cargo ship is barreling towards 1 out of 2 of the MAIN supports for the bridge of course its going to collapse they're acting like bridges are engineered to withstand a cargo ship hitting them head on
Exactly my thoughts! I don’t think people comprehend that cargo ship is heavier than the bridge itself.
the bridge is most l ikely riveted together, to hit the bridge from the side with enough force to tilt the bridge could cause catastrophic failure of the rivets along nearly the entire length of the bridge.

Watching the cars go down with the bridge was absolutely surreal. What a truly unimaginable tragedy
A few news stations ran footage close up at slow pace and reported the last vehicle luckily made it across with 30 seconds to spare. They said it would be interesting to interview those last few drivers about what they saw from the bridge.
@@sandyrodriguez9341 oh good! I absolutely truly cannot imagine what that experience would be like. Hopefully there weren’t any cars but I’m sure we will find out in the days ahead.
Not mentioned: 1) The pilot issued a distress call after the ship lost power. 2) The port side anchor was dropped, hoping to stop the ship. (You can see the splash of the anchor in the video.)
Good observations. No power, no steerage.
We're living in times now nothing is a surprise 😢My condolences to the people who lost thier lives and the family's omg
I don’t know how much damage it took from the crash. But its scary how fragile the bridge looks when it collapses. My heart goes iut to thise who were there in that moment.
This is beyond gross incompetence. This company needs to pay billions.
Good lord can we wiat for facts to come out first? The boat had technical malfunctions.
@@chriskay1449When watching the video, the moment the ship briefly regained power it very sharply turned directly for the support.
10 million a head
@@chriskay1449what does that mean to the families. We had a problem so its ok.
Oh No we need immigration!!!!!!!
imagine screeching to a halt and watching the bridge you were about to drive on plunge into the water....
Sad that lives were lost in this unfortunate event. Luckily it wasnt during the day or rush hour, if you want to call it that.
I'm just so grateful this didn't happen at rush hour. Hope all these people can be found safely 🙏
I said the same thing! The lose of life would have been catastrophic!!!
I was just crossing this bridge coming from D.C. Heading to New York City literally right before this bridge collapse… Crazy… 😔 🙏
Did you see it happen?
God has bigger plans for you. Hug your loved ones extra closely. Glad you made it safely across
@@margarett3920 God is a fantasy margarett...in your mind.
Hope you thanked the Lord.
The ship's local pilots tried to avoid the crash, sadly they couldn't. Also, kudos to the 22 Indian crew guys who alerted the authorities in advance.
Literally have dreams of being trapped in a car under water. This is terrifying! Prays to the families. ❤️
Prayers for People and First Responders ❤
Prayer, doing absolutely nothing while thinking you're helping. Donate time or money, something that actually helps
@@user-fy2kx3mi2c why aren’t you rebuking the “thoughts” or “condolences” comments? For they fall under your same designation of “doing nothing”.
I know you’re triggered by the word “prayers”
Seems a very odd thing to people who have empathy for the poor people who lost their lives.
