This Harley Davidson's Magneti Marelli EFI is Horrible. Can We Fix It?

- Just heading down to the shop to get a 99 Harley Davidson FLH up and running smoothly. The bike is equipped with a Magneti Marelli fuel injection system which is known for causing a few issues. Hopefully we can find the cure for her.

I have a 1998 Road King Classic with Magnetti Marrelli fuel injection. The bike has a 121,000 miles on it and still runs beautifully. I thought about changing to a carburetor and took it to my independent Harley-Davidson dealer. He looked at the mileage and at that time it had a 110,000 miles on it. He looked at the odometer and said....Does that say a 110,000 miles? He said I would not change over to a carburetor..just keep riding with the fuel injection. Magnetti Marrelli is really not that difficult...it's just that modern technicians are not taught anything about the older bikes..Maybe I just got lucky...but I love it.
exactly. It’s not a bad system. Just shitty mechanics. The system is very finicky with the TPS center tune it by feel it’ll run great.
Not much of a tutorial but some helpful info for the DIY crowd. Sometimes you just have to start from scratch and go a to z. Good to see it running.
Ive just gotten a 2000. same exact bike and sounds like the same mufflers. It would have been nice to see the idle actually being adjusted. Yeah I know the EFI is an oddity only used for a few years. once it gets to be a pain in the ass, I'll dephi or carb it.
Set the base TPS to .275v and then make your adjustment to idle… then adjust air bleed
Any idea on a cheap runner? Or how do i get this thing a program
Yup I have a moto guzzi with twin magneti throttle bodies. Syncing them on top of Getting the air bleeds correct is a pain in the ass.
Try the ENGINE TEMPERATURE SENSOR. When the bike is hot it will run and idle like crap. Soon as I changed that sensor, ran like a new bike! My bike is a 1997 FLHTPI.
Simple enough
The Temp Sensor is the most common problem, makes the bike run rich. Mine is a 1996, 90k miles and runs great. Temp Sensor will usually not have any fault codes or check engine light. Sensor still provides a signal, but as the age they loose calibration and fuel injection thinks the bike is cold when it is not.
I thought you said the Marelli system was horrible? A couple adjustments and some new intake seals on a 20+ year old bike and it runs great. That ain't a horrible system by any stretch. It was one of the first EFI systems on a production motorcycle and the first ever on a Harley. My 1999 still still starts and runs great.

I made some adjustments to my 2001 road king and it still bogs down after a few miles and the bike being hot. What else can be wrong?

do these have an obd connector or the older marelli 3 pin?
I am getting a code 32 on the rear injector. I have 1.6 ohms between the ECM and injector plug. I cannot figure out how to remove the Packard pull-to-seat terminal end from the plug. Any advise?
Is the fuel pump connected to the front or rear quick connect on the tank? Does the pump connect into short connection to the intake or the longer line? Trying to fix a Harley after a tweeker touched it. And he replaced the quick connects. He put the return in the forward hole in tank. And the pump connected to the rear hole in tank. Short line goes into the intake via pressure regulator. Is that the direction the gas should flow? Or should it feed injectors thru longer hose into intake feeding injectors?
To be fair on both sides while some injection is not bad and now pump fuel is pretty much useless after 4 weeks but for a daily rider I still think carby is the best way, you have a little bit of battery you can push a Harley in a top gear and get started but fuel injection no chance.
So what was the problem with the Bike????

Going to look at an 01 Springer Softail. Would that have the Magneti or the Delphi?
Magneti marelli or cv carburetor, look under the left side of fuel tank, 2 lines is magneti marelli 1 line is carb and 02 and up is delphi or carb depending on the bike
tps looks just like the ones on 90's early 2000' fiats
marelli systems are very fussy about air leaks.
I have a 2000 Police Roadking, and I've never had an idling problem ; however I live in Florida. Is there a way to tell if you in fact have the MM fuel injection?
Same here 2002 road king police, no idle issues.
If you have a twin throat intake manifold, it's MM.
@DG Customs….I have an opportunity to get a 2000 Road King with the same MM EFI. The bike is one owner and has 7000 miles on it. Would the issues with this EFI system scare you from buying the bike?
You can always put a carb on it.
You didn't teach anything, you never showed how to do any adjustments remove the system etc.
If you dont know.....you dont know....like everything once figured out, they can go ok,

I've got a 99 roadking twin cam and the readings only go up to 194.
Learning The Hard Way Buy a Carb or Delphi EFI Rare to find anyone who can Fix a Marelli . My Favorite is Eva S&S Carb Pingel Free Flow Petcock Plug all vacumn lines and you can keep it Running yourself not much to work on an S&S . The 8's Come with some really bad Problems From The factory .

had one of those and the intake gaskets were changed 3 times and never stopped leaking. the thing never ran right no matter who worked on it.

I would replace my MM with a carburetor but then I guess I could put a hand crank on my car too. I worked on MM on Ferrari cars and you just have to know about them. The only rub is that finding new parts like a fuel pump assembly is hard but they are out there. back in the early 20-0's Hrley Davidson flirted with Ferrari for MM fuel injection the way they did with Porsche for the engine on the V-Rod.
