  • This is Manchester United's level right now. That wasn't a humiliation, that was a reflection of a reality. Injuries have decimated progress but the problems are deeper than that. End the season already.

Rather than finding blames within, it was the most sensible "approach" taken by Arteta. He clearly has learnt from last season. Our "comfort zone" is attacking space but it isn't to break down teams, certainly with this squad with 12-13 injured and against the best defensive team. Some people might say that Arteta outclassed Ten Hag or Arsenal "didn't come out of 2nd gear", that's not true.
United started Amrabat and Mainoo in middle, both "retention" players. Also, you could clearly see the tactical shift from Ten Hag - dropping Amrabat in a back 3 to outnumber Arsenal's pressing front 2. The setup of Ten Hag was pretty good but again, if you have to break a mid/low block, you need quality from the wings. Arsenal actually were okay with Garnacho but only to "cross the ball" because Saliba and Gabriel are good box defenders. Garnacho's crossing and decision making was poor at times but when he did beat White on 2-3 times, he missed the wonderful shooting opportunities also, albeit from far.
Ten Hag isn't clueless, he isn't an idiot. He deserves criticism but the problem is we find scapegoats and absolutely "discredit" what he did last season and why he was brought in for a process in the first place.
If Arsenal had our injury record, their lineup wouldn't have Saliba (Martinez), Gabriel (Varane), Tomiyasu (Maguire), Kiwior (Lindelof), Zinchenko (Shaw), Timber (Malacia), Partey/Jorginho (Mount), Trossard/Martinelli (Rashford), Odegaard (Bruno). And btw, Arsenal "derailed" last season because "1 CB", Saliba got injured.

Biggest problem with Garanacho is that people have hyped him to be a superstar. So instead of being team player, his whole mindset is being the man who wins game which is not only costing the team, it's gonna cost him as well. He puts in a lot of effort, don't get me wrong, however his actual ability is not really that high at the moment. His shooting, crossing, passing, linkup play, ball control, vision, dribbling pretty much everything is average or below average. However he constantly shoots because he wants to be the guy like Ronaldo but his actual ability is not helping him.
He has a lot to improve, hope he can change his mindset being a team player rather than being the guy. Once he develops his skillset he can be a bit selfish.

💯 Nobody can convince me ETH is a clueless bad coach. He made some questionable decisions - selections, game management or even transfer priorities (as ppl say) during the season. This is no different from other managers who're less than 3 seasons into their job, but I'd say 'questionable' at best cus there's so much information we aren't privy to.
I think we should recognize the fight and efforts from today. I don't like ppl saying Arsenal didn't get out from 2nd gear or whatsoever. Yes, we were still abysmal but Arsenal never managed to kill the game like they did by scoring 2,3,5 goals in previous matches either. Today's not my standard as a United fan, but wasn't too bad in this instance.

For the first time ever, Sam spoke so senseless. In this midst, what do you expect Ten Hag to do? Amrabat came to the point where all the LBs were injured. Amongst all the players, Amrabat was the only alternative. When we play defensive, it means zero threat to the opposite. You wanted Ten Hag to go Mourinho style that many people did not want in United? Even in low-blocks, we would still crumble because the players we got cannot defend for 90 minutes. Erik Ten Hag has done what he could with what he has got. Not any elite coach can do what he did with this team durin' this injury crisis.

It's easier to imagine better ways in our heads, but whether they work always remain a myth. I don't know enough about football, but I'd think a 'pragmatic' style will require different types of drills/ training. It happened to me in high school basketball.
The problem comes back to -- do we gear our training more towards the pragmatic 'Mourinho' style just to navigate this freak season for a top4 bid? If we do so regular enough, will this get drilled into the players' head even deeper? Bearing in mind there is no guarantee of winning and also a possibility of getting us further from the more modern attacking way that we are dying for United to play.
The fact is, I can't envision how well our squad can execute any style. Squad availability is one thing, but I can't trust this team with players constantly making simple / amateur individual errors. Is Pragmatism really better if we weigh everything? It's a tough call, so I'm conflicted and won't judge ETH on that.
I'm just curious to see what Ineos will do to try fix this football heritage calamity gradually. The stadium leak happened right in front of SJR, Sir Dave etc. even Keir Starmer 🙄😒😵with fans having to leave before match finished.
This season is finally ending... with just a FA Cup match that matters. I'm backing ETH and all our players till the very end. Go United!

@@maniaweng I agree, if Ten Hag sets the team up more defensively people would be fuming. Remember the game against City, when we pretty much played with 8 players in our own box. So many fans were upset, calling it "small club mentality". Yet when we lose because were playing more proactive Ten Hag is clueless.
Surely there is a middle ground that would be ideal, but untill that balance gets found people will blame Ten Hag no matter what he tries.

Amad actually did well, but Erik man, those subs at the end were at least 15 minutes too late. But guys like Amrabat and the formation change kept us from what could easily have been a humiliation. The whole game was a bore yes, even the Arsenal side wasn't really up for it. Regardless of what y'all think about some of our players, if we had our full squad and keep Ambrabat as the 6 we'd have won this game. The team on paper was pathetic, let alone McTominay being the 10 instead of Bruno and he's far from Bruno's worst level. The season's ended, I hope Man United keeps ten Hag and fixes the injury issues, the transfers ins-and-outs, the overall structure etc but it'll take time. Arsenal have most of their squad for the full season, so they've trained together and played together every week and thus are much more of a team. Stop being reactionary and be logical. I think the reason we didn't get pounded today was because Arsenal didn't press us hard, they tried to play football, albeit kind of casually.
I'm almost certain that if even a bunch of reasonably fit amateur footballers played against United and were told to _"press them hard, get in close, and throw your weight around"_ that they could beat this United team, because this is how the teams in the lower half of the table play, and in the Championship, and we really struggle against these kinds of teams.
Especially when the ref wants to let the game flow.
The United players just don't know how to get stuck in when the other team are aggressive, and it seems like a bunch of rugby players playing against a team of little girls who don't want to get hurt.
I don't think they are even "afraid" as such, it's just that they don't know how to handle a team that plays rough and aggressive, and they panic and give the ball away a lot.

  • @Signumism

Calm down Sam, compared to how our team performed on some of the games this season, this performance against Arsenal is commendable at least. If only Case didn't kept Havertz onside there's a chance the game could draw or go really different. The problem is we didn't have enough creative players on the midfield and the off the ball movement is still lacking to create spaces in the final third.
Given the squad limitations, Erik goes into this game with a plan and it almost worked.
But yeah we need more experienced attackers, we field younglings today and as exciting as they are, they're inexperienced and need time. I wish people would give the squad time to grow.

We played with most our first 11 injured and only lost 1 - 0 to an Arsenal team that is beating teams by 4-5 goals a game. It's like the fan channels forget reality. We have an injury crisis, the Glazers are still here and we have certain players that have fallen off hard in a sudden burst. It was shocking seeing a 35 year old Evans having more energy than Casemiro. But this is the reality we are facing right now.
