Thank you so much for this very useful video! Made things much clearer, in terms of how I clean my questionnaire data that responds to questions with multiple answers to choose from (tick which characteristics apply...). Many thanks.
this tutorial is clear and made easy to understand. Can someone direct me to the other videos links that explain how to code the other part of the open ended question that has not been explained here which deals with such questions like " LIST UP TO 4 WAYS TO IMPROVE OPEN SPACES " where you have many respondents each listing the ways he thinks right.
Hi Phil, Your SPSS tutorials have been a blessing to me. I recently entered my variables to my data sheet only to realize that I needed to create two of my questions as multiple response sets. Do you foresee any difficulty by me inserting or adding these into the already added variables? I have yet to add any results, I am just ensuring that my data sheet is clean and ready for the results.
this is so much helpful to me as a beginner of research. I'd like to ask you about how to assess item reliability in multiple-choice question. also, another kind of nominal types of data would be so expected from you to explain to me. thank you so so much. :)
+Ramlan Zeyn Hi. There is more than one stat to assess item reliability. If you are a newbie, it's likely you've been taught Cronbach's Alpha. There are vids on Cronbach's Alpha on RUclips. (I am hesitant to make a vid on Cronbach's Alpha as it has a number of flaws).
Hi, What about if the multiple response question has an option like: "Other, please specify" in which the respondent has to actually write a response himself? Let say that that response was "London", for example. How do I insert that into SPSS? Do I have to create a Value for every different response that I get into that category (e.g Paris, Madrid etc.)? Please help Thanks in advance
Thank you so much for this! I have a question on how do you deal with multiple answers like this one :1) Have you ever visited cities for an event, if so which ones; 1) __________________ 2) __________________ 3) __________________ 4) __________________ varialables are coded as categories and how? the type is string and not numeric! Do we use values in the variable view?
+Eleni Soulandrou Hi Eleni...this falls into OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS...I have a video of handling these types of questions here: ruclips.net/video/KJO7mtsc8Rg/видео.html Good luck!
hy,Eleni i am doing M.phil in economics.my research include primary data set .now i am entring data in spss but i am stil confused what i do next...? plz tel me about .....
Thank you, Phil. Very helpful and like how you don't rush when explaining the steps. One question - if my answers are of the open variety (respondents choose their answer and not predefined) and I chose the categories option in the multiple response sets window is anything else different in the steps or is it the same as when you choose dichotomies?
+Jay Welly Jay. Glad you found the video useful. I deal with open ended questions in this video, and hope you find your answer there: ruclips.net/video/KJO7mtsc8Rg/видео.html
+akshay tarfe Researching for, and writing a thesis can be a lonely experience. But you feel less alone when you've watched a video and read viewers' comments.
Thanks. You Did a nice Job,my teacher didn't taught me the way you simplified. Please can you show us how to analyze multiple response question with Other option.
Glad it helped you Elizabeth. If I understand your question correctly this other video of mine answer it ruclips.net/video/KJO7mtsc8Rg/видео.html If you like it, share it. Spread the love :D
Great explanation. How do you enter entries that ask a question then ask for reason for selection? Example: How often have you felt that you have been treated unfairly at the workplace? a)very often b) often c) not often d) not at all What do you think was the reason for this experience? a) your age b) Your gender c)your race
Thanks for your response. However the example i sent seems to be 2 questions but it is actually 1 question with 2 parts. First once the participants answer How do you enter entries that ask a question then ask for reason for selection?, the second part of the question "What do you think was the reason for this experience?" seeks to find out the participants thought of why they think they had the experience
This was very helpful for us with our master thesis! You end the video with saying that it is possible to do other types of analyzing methodes with the multiple answers, when combined. We are trying to find a way to do some correlation between multiple possibilities. Can you share some information on how to do so?
Excellent description of this feature. Did you ever record the follow up video on ways to use a Multiple Response Set in other analyses? Is it possible to use a $XX Multiple Response Set in an analysis other than Frequencies or Crosstabs or must you revert to the original variables as dichotomous votes?
Hello Phil Chan. Quick question. If I wanted to perform a regression analysis on data from a multiple response question then do I still need to drop a category as a dummy variable or can I use all categories as dummy variables and still have SPSS display a constant for the equation? Thanks alot
Hello Phil, thanks a lot for your video. Reagarding to my final year project, my questionnaire scale is based on (No, Rare, Possible, Likely and Certain. How do i determined the suitable test for this kind of scale?? I'm new with SPSS, so thats why i'm a bit slow to understand.
Hi phil, I wanted to know if we could do anything else apart from frequency and crosstabs with multiple responses? I have an entire questionnaire full of multiple responses.. as i have entered each option as a column heading and denoted ticked with '1' and unticked with '0' - im not even sure if i can add up the questions to form one section (for eg, "self care") or do a validity analysis of the questionnaire (because entered this way, the data is nominal). Please help or point me to the right resources/videos!
Hi. Simple is better. You find a tool that answers the questions in your research. No need to go looking for complicated analyses to wow your reader if it does not add to a simple analysis that does the same.
Hi Phil, Thanks for explaining it in such a simplified way. But could you just help me how to add data, as i have used excel and have put multiple value in a single field like (a,b,d as options in one single column). I have already collected data of more than 100 people and I am not willing to do it manually. Thanks
How can I enter in "data view" the multiple responses? For example: the survey asks for the ages of children and the options go like this: [ ] 0-1 year old [ ] 1-3 years old [ ] 4-6 years old [ ] 7-9 years old and the respondent ticks more than 1 and i want to enter it in numeric value. Please help me.
Hi Phil, If I have six categories under a likert scale question (From very important through to very unimportant), is there any way I can analyse which one of these categories have been ticked as "most important" by my respondents or how I can simply combine them in one table that shows the categories plus degrees of importance? Thanks
Basically my question in the survey is: How important are the following aspects for you in your working place? Then I have six categories where respondents have to tick on a scale from 1 to 5. I would need a table that shows which one of these categories has been rated as most important overall. I have entered the categories as separate variables with the values 5=Most important, 4= important etc.... If I do a frequency table with all the 6 variables, I'm getting 6 separate tables...
Seems like you want to evaluate, how much importance does each individual has his/her response for that particular question on a Likert Scale. There are several ways, in which you can re-code Likert scale; also depends on your analysis. If this is your outcome, then whether you want to analyze it as categorical dichotomous outcome or continuous outcome? you can covert Likert to continuous and categorical both. For example; Likert based on 4 responses (Strongly Diasgree, Disagree, Agree, and Strongly Agree) you can code them as (Strongly Diasgree = 1, Disagree = 2, Agree = 3, and Strongly Agree = 4); meaning if there are total of 10 questions then maximum score a person can have (if he responds Strongly agree to all questions) would be (4 * 10 = 40); and minimum score a person can have (if he responds Strongly disagree to all questions would be (1 * 10 = 10). However, you have to be careful when reporting percentages in this case, since there is no absolute zero (a person with 10 score, which in reality has no likelihood at all, but would still be at 10/40 = 25th percentile of total score). Other way is to merge your categories, the way you want (for example; you can merge strongly agree + agree = agree or high importance and disagree + strongly disagree = disagree or low importance) this way you will end up having 2 categories for your outcome. Hope it helps! Feel free to contact for any other statistical and analysis issues.
Hi dear Phill Chan, I need your help I have three variables having many subscales in each items I want to analyse these data using multiple correlation so how can I do this ? Could you please give me some suggestions?
Hi. Great video, thanks. However, I have a question! I am trying to work out how many males and females chose the responses in my multiple response set. I have created this which I gave respondents a number of options to barriers to cycling. I am now trying to find out whether these are the same for males and females, but am getting muddled! Thanks, Suzie
+Suzanne H It sounds like you wanting a table with gender as one variable and barriers to cycling (with a number of options) as another variable and then you want the counts in each cell. If so, this is a contingency table, and if your question is whether or not there is an association/relationship between gender and barriers to cycling then you can do it with a crosstabs analysis (I have a video on that on RUclips). Good luck.

can i ask a question how would you rank the following using spss, when for example i got 10 diseases and i ask 15 doctors to rank these diseases from 1 to 5 (so from 10 diseases they go to choose 5 diseases and rank them from 1 to 5), with rank 1 being the highest rank or the disease with the highest risk, and rank 5 would be the lowest rank. so i would have 15 different ranking results from the 15 doctors. So how would i determine the top 5 diseases based on these?
Hi Phil! i have a question could you please let me know how to enter multiple answers in coding like if the respondant marked two or three options within same question. For example.. Do you have family history of any of the following diseases? 1) DM 2) HTN 3)Heart disease 4) If any other please specify______________ and respondants marked two or three of them. How would we enter them in data view although same options are coded in variable view?
+Dr.Naush Farooq Hi Naush, this video deal with your question if they tick on or more of (1)-(3)....For your answer(4), that's an open response question, and to handles such questions see the link to the vid I pasted in the comment to Eleni below. Good luck!
thanks phil chan for the video, but i have a question when we have like 300 responses it's kinda hard to type for each responce a '1' or a '0' is there a way so we can do it when we have many responces?
+Mist Lumos Better to do it case by case even if it's slow. Data entry can take a lot of time if you have interviewed many people, and/or you have lots of questions.
Hi, thanks for uploading. I have a question. Please then how can I analyze or code questions like: Please list the 5 most important motivations do do so? thanks.
Hi Phil, I have a question. I have exported my data from Qualtrics to SPSS, but how do you organize and code experimental data? I have 6 experimental conditions
I do not know about Qualtrics. you may find my video on questionnaire data entry that shows you how to complete the fields for your variables useful ruclips.net/video/zmVKGshelcQ/видео.html
Hi Phil. Thank you for this helpful video. I have a question please, How we can find the mean for multiple response questions, "Tick boxes that apply" please (my case here is 13 departments, and customers can deal with more than one department within the organization. so, how can i get Mean "Satisfaction" for each department?) looking to your help Thanks
Is it not possible to just input data in a single variable and just separate everything with commas? For example, safe=1, dev=2, etc. And in the data, we just put what the participant has answered separated by commas. e.g. participant1 chose safe and dev, so in spss, we type 1, 2.
Thank you for the videos, They are really very helpful. I was inserting data and everything was find but today a message alert was showing on the variable view saying: " an unknown error occured processing DataSetMsg:: Class DataSetMsgContainer" and the data view shows questions marks in all the rows????????? Can you help me solve this problem please.
does anyone know what univariate distribution means? i've been given this assignment for college and its asks us to describe the univariate distribution of responses for certain variables, but my lecturer has not told us what this means exactly... please advice!
hi, I have a problem in codin a multiple response so i must create for each response a variable and coding with 0 and 1, my question is : Is it possible to combine all variables into one because it represents One question ?
hi how do you enter data which is subdivided into a category. For example: 1) Which type of complementary therapy you have used? a. acupuncture b. dietary supplements i. food/ vitamin supplements ii. dietary adjustment iii. vegetarian food c. hypnosis If I have entered my basic data using the 1- acupuncture, 2- dietary supple, 3- hypnosis, do I then put for example 22-food/vit supp, 23- dietary adjustment, 24 vegetarian? How would this affect my analysis of my data? Please help if you can.
Hi, I'm just wondering if there are any 'rules' you can activate which do not allow for human error. For example, if my labels are 1,2 and 3, is it possible to not allow 4 or 5 to be entered? thanks :)
Does anyone know any links that explain how to enter the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) into SPSS for survey results. I have the manual, but it does not give any details on how to do this, just how to score individual results?? Please help
Hi Phil, In one of your videos titled " SPSS for newbies: Data entry for multiple response questions, tick boxes that apply", you talked about three types of multiple response questions. I want to find out how you can analyse the open ended type of multiple response question. In your video, the specific question was ... List up to 4 ways to improve open spaces in your area? 1.............................. 2......................................... 3............................. 4......................................... you can use this to illustrate it for me. thank you
Hi Mo. After data collection, you would go through the responses. You will be looking out for common responses eg. "more parks", "more garbage bins", "more seating", then you would code these into SPSS eg label them 1, 2, 3. Then, the data entry is done. Where you would go next depends on your research agenda. Good luck.
Am dealing with coding of the question as i mentioned below in my comment. I have coded all those options as 1234 in variable view and when i enter them in data view like 12 together they appear along and if i change them into wording form they remain in numerical form donot show options encoded for them i hope youv'e got what am i trying to say?
+Dr.Naush Farooq If I understand what you are saying, you are asking about how to switch between viewing the text and code in your data view. The answer is 10mins 16 seconds into this video: ruclips.net/video/QuEmL2mGlGI/видео.html
Thank you for this helpful video sir! I have one question. What if I have a very large set of answers so that I'm not able to maually type in all the 1's and 0's? Can SPSS do that automatically for me and if yes how?
@@soniasangker Haven't opened SPSS in 6 years sorry 😬 All I can remember is that I hate this program and haven't missed it ever since. Good luck to you though!
How do you enter a question with if Yes, why? It's string right.... how will you enter and analyze. Please help me out kindly. I'm an undergraduate student .
how do i avoid having too much tables for a variable multiple question. i need to create it on one table example job satisfaction having six items of a likert scale of SA,A,SD,D
The video states, "whats spss to know that these two columns belong to the same question" - which is what i'm desperately trying to find out but doesn't give the answer. Does anybody know?
+Laura Sjardin Not sure what's going on Laura, but once you have created the variables, you should just be able to save the file in the regular way File>Save As
when i set the multiple response set then i save it, but when I close spss then open it later it didn't save my set. What's wrong with that? Thank you in advance.
This is an IT question, not a stats question. A number of things could be the reason. Could be you have given a new file name to your new data set, but that you open the old file, or you could have saved the file with the same name but it's been stored in a different folder to your original one, and that you open the file in the original folder; or something else.
in the minute 6.00 he said "do i need to use 0.1 no use what evr u like ...he should mention that the used coding must be the same in the all questions .not mixing .

can i ask a question how would you rank the following using spss, when for example i got 10 diseases and i ask 15 doctors to rank these diseases from 1 to 5 (so from 10 diseases they go to choose 5 diseases and rank them from 1 to 5), with rank 1 being the highest rank or the disease with the highest risk, and rank 5 would be the lowest rank. so i would have 15 different ranking results from the 15 doctors. So how would i determine the top 5 diseases based on these?
Thank you very much
Hi Phil! i have a question could you please let me know how to enter multiple answers in coding like if the respondant marked two or three options within same question. For example..
Do you have family history of any of the following diseases?
1) DM
2) HTN
3)Heart disease
4) If any other please specify______________
and respondants marked two or three of them.
Good luck!
Sir i have a question. If there are both negative as well as positive sentences in true/false questionnaire, how to code them. Thank you!!
thanks phil chan for the video, but i have a question
when we have like 300 responses it's kinda hard to type for each responce a '1' or a '0' is there a way so we can do it when we have many responces?
+Mist Lumos Better to do it case by case even if it's slow. Data entry can take a lot of time if you have interviewed many people, and/or you have lots of questions.
Phil Chan thank you
Thank you very much for the help!!!
Hi, thanks for uploading. I have a question. Please then how can I analyze or code questions like: Please list the 5 most important motivations do do so? thanks.
This is an open response question, and I have a video on it! Here: ruclips.net/video/KJO7mtsc8Rg/видео.html
thank you so much! ;-)
I have a question please, How we can find the mean for multiple response questions, "Tick boxes that apply" please (my case here is 13 departments, and customers can deal with more than one department within the organization. so, how can i get Mean "Satisfaction" for each department?)
looking to your help Thanks
One way to get the means is by clicking Analyze>Frequencies. I have a video on this: ruclips.net/video/iyAEAlux5Mw/видео.html
did u say FUCK CASES at 7:39
+nainfalak hhhh funny
For example:
1) Which type of complementary therapy you have used?
a. acupuncture
b. dietary supplements
i. food/ vitamin supplements
ii. dietary adjustment
iii. vegetarian food
c. hypnosis
If I have entered my basic data using the 1- acupuncture, 2- dietary supple, 3- hypnosis, do I then put for example 22-food/vit supp, 23- dietary adjustment, 24 vegetarian?
How would this affect my analysis of my data?
Please help if you can.
how do i use this multiple data sets in regression analysis?
Hi, I'm just wondering if there are any 'rules' you can activate which do not allow for human error. For example, if my labels are 1,2 and 3, is it possible to not allow 4 or 5 to be entered? thanks :)
Nice idea, but to my knowledge it does not have this function. For your scenario you can pick up errors by calling on frequency, summary stats
Does anyone know any links that explain how to enter the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) into SPSS for survey results. I have the manual, but it does not give any details on how to do this, just how to score individual results?? Please help
Vegan Ricana i have the same problem :(
Hi Phil, In one of your videos titled " SPSS for newbies: Data entry for multiple response questions, tick boxes that apply", you talked about three types of multiple response questions.
The answer is 10mins 16 seconds into this video: ruclips.net/video/QuEmL2mGlGI/видео.html
keep up with the videos!
Thank you for this helpful video sir! I have one question. What if I have a very large set of answers so that I'm not able to maually type in all the 1's and 0's? Can SPSS do that automatically for me and if yes how?
did you find out how to do it?
@@soniasangker Haven't opened SPSS in 6 years sorry 😬 All I can remember is that I hate this program and haven't missed it ever since. Good luck to you though!
can you another video cluster bar chart using multiples response set?
what about likert scale?
How do you enter a question with if Yes, why? It's string right.... how will you enter and analyze. Please help me out kindly. I'm an undergraduate student .
how do i avoid having too much tables for a variable multiple question. i need to create it on one table example job satisfaction having six items of a likert scale of SA,A,SD,D
Where is the example of the instance where it says "How often do you use your phone? never sometimes often" ?
The video states, "whats spss to know that these two columns belong to the same question" - which is what i'm desperately trying to find out but doesn't give the answer. Does anybody know?
hi! i have a question. when you make a multiple respons set, how can i save it? everytime i click it away, its gone.
+Laura Sjardin Not sure what's going on Laura, but once you have created the variables, you should just be able to save the file in the regular way File>Save As
thank you bro
how can enter for sample farmer household having different farm plots with distance
plot A.....30 min
plot B....50 min
...
Thank you so much :)
how do i enter data that people have to give answers in a chronological order
when i set the multiple response set then i save it, but when I close spss then open it later it didn't save my set. What's wrong with that? Thank you in advance.
This is an IT question, not a stats question. A number of things could be the reason.
Could be you have given a new file name to your new data set, but that you open the old file, or
you could have saved the file with the same name but it's been stored in a different folder to your original one, and that you open the file in the original folder; or something else.
in the minute 6.00 he said "do i need to use 0.1 no use what evr u like ...he should mention that the used coding must be the same in the all questions .not mixing .
