This song is Floor at her emotionally most cutting. The range of her expressiveness here is just phenomenal. From angry accusing tones to clear crystal bells, it’s amazing. It’s not the most technically demanding song she sings, but dang if it ain’t the most emotionally draining and complex.

Corine Jones Oh boy... this song has a lot of context which makes it even more haunting. This band has had three singers and the singer in this one is the third. She’s the most versatile and her name is Floor Jansen. 95% of Nightwish’s songs are written by the keyboardist, Tuomas. They became a band in 1996, with an opera singer as the front woman - her name was Tarja. In 2005, relations between her and the band became incredibly strained because she wanted to start a solo career and her husband, who is her agent wanted to control what the band does more. It came to a head when the bassist, Marco suggested that she would get kicked out of the band. I think Tuomas wanted to let the fans know and not after it happened so he did it via an open letter (not the best way). He got a lot of backlash after that and wrote this song as a way of committing musical suicide, to stop himself from actually doing it. They barely perform this song live and this is probably the last time it’ll ever be on a setlist because the way Floor delivers is it so emotional.

it is not just the voice. The music is great. The guy on the keyboards (music composer) is a genius.

  • @The_Pony

    MrM
The first time I heard this one, it was soon after my friend committed suicide.
it always struck me but didn't quite resonate (the singer, Anette, I like but she wasnt really my favorite.) until much later when I stumbled across this recording of Floor singing it. I can never finish the song without goosebumps or tears, no matter the amount of times I watch it.
(I had heard Floor joined NW and had gone on a live video binge where before i had always listened to studio albums- Floor and Tarja were always my favorite singers so when I heard Floor joined I was naturally very eager to hear everything she had touched.)
Thats when this song REALLY hit me like a ton of bricks. Her raw emotion just cuts you somehow. The song is also brilliantly composed. the lyrics are something interesting to analyze too, (especially now considering you've listened to it. )
Ive been a fan since 2001 and my mother had been a fan even before that. I kind of grew up with the music and now it's my favorite band. I feel like there are many Nightwish songs that bring me back always to parts of my life where they either helped me escape my mind or felt relevant to me. the music evolved and so did I. but it never left, only became more perfect for me as they release more music, it seems. they are releasing an album soon and touring in 2020-2021
Without going into too much detail, I humbly suggest a favorite of mine: Ghost River (Live, preferably, at Wacken 2013)

I actually first heard this song as a reaction video on here. When she hit the sparkle my scenery notes it almost brought me to tears. Then the ending finished me off lol, After I read what the song was about now I can hardly watch the video without getting hit emotionally. I'm sure Ann will fill you in on that but long story short, it was about when Tuomas had to let the first singer Tarja go and the backlash he received from fans and others and how he felt himself. If I'm not mistaken it got so bad that suicide was a thought. So instead of suicide he wrote this song where he did it in the song instead. I could be wrong but that's what I have gleaned from comments I have read. I'm not an expert by any means and anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.

As I stated before, it was recommended by You Tube. When I listened to them, I was hooked! A very easy thing to be. It was hard for me to find music, different than what I have heard over many, many years. They as a band, are a fresh breath to me. Only way I could ever describe them is, it's like you have gone to a musical play, to be entertained. I have never, had my emotions brought so close to the surface as I have had with them. Most of their songs, you won't hear anywhere else. And they do better live than on a recording. I feel more alive, listening to them, than I have in a long time. One day, I hope to go see them live. One other thing, they perform, because of their love for music and their fans. Each are paid 8 percent of what is brought in for the year. They do meet and greets before their concerts, sign autographs. They are known to throw bottled water out to fans when it's hot and throw t-shirts like crazy to fans in the audience. Not heard of a lot of bands that will do that for their fans. Just good people, all the way around.

I've always been a huge Nightwish fan, the type of parent that is a firm believer in introduced my kids to all different types of music. When I first heard this song, I had just gotten the CD, so Anette was the lead singer. I didn't get a chance to actually listen to it until I was on the road, driving home from my Chemotherapy appointment. There I was 31 years old battling Stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer, my body in exceptional pain from the Radiation and Chemo, my future, my life so very uncertain, living in the reality that I was very very sick and how this sickness was affecting my half-side and our four kids... then I heard these lyrics for the very first time. I had to literally, pull my car over to the side of the road as I just sobbed, releasing all the intense emotion of my situation, my reality. Believe it, the last statement of that song, "In the end I will always love you, the beginning." was a reminder to me that God would only give me what He knows I am strong enough to handle, that I had God's love and He was there with me, even then as I was sobbing in my car listening to this Nightwish song.

Floor Jansen, the Dutch dynamo and Queen of symphonic metal is one of several Dutch front women leading symphonic band (Dutch Singing Goddess Club). Her power, range and stage presence is awesome to watch and even more dynamic to see in person. This song reflects Tuomas, the keyboard's depression and near suicide after their 1st singer, Tarja was let go from the band and there was an enormous backlash that blamed him for the event. This is his musical suicide and goes through a whole range of emotions, a song only Floor can pull off as she conveys those emotions throughout the song. It is still so hard for Tuomas to hear this song that it is rarely played and when it is played his feed is usually turned off!! Great reaction and don't worry that feeling you get in your brain is Floor letting you know you are alive and well especially listening to an angel sing!!

    • @Aurinkohirvi
      @Aurinkohirvi 5 лет назад

Yeah the band got blame: after all they did the firing, and they were a group of young men firing a girl. Some Tarja fans have to this day not forgiven them, which is really sad. But from this song and Tuomas' depression I think who most blamed him, was himself, as the lyrics put it "oh Christ, how I hate what I have become". I saw Marco and Tarja do a doetto about a year again, they seemed in very good terms, and there was a long hug in the end. I'm hoping time has mended wounds.

And then Floor joined the band and made a this song even better
sadly, they dont play this one often (they used to with anette, but live with anette had a very diffrent vibe, because she's to "pop" for this- i still wonder how the hell she managed to do it in the studio).

The part "be stil my son, you're home" brings always tears to eyes, Floor is a amazing singer that has a classical background. There is a version with Anette, but she sings at max possible and is more poppy. Floor puts a whole lot of emotion to this song, something Anette could not give. Even the first singer Tarja who is more opera orientated, could not bring all of this. She was to much drama, and not at all capable of bringing all forms of singing Froor can do.

Excellent choice for a renaissance man! and funny that you should mention soundtracks. Soundtrack music has been a major interest of study, and influence for Tuomas Holopainen (the keyboardist, and the one who does most of the writing and composition for the band). The first time I heard this song, was when Annette Olson was the lead singer, and I loved it, but Nothing compared to the experience of hearing it sung by Floor Jansen (the current singer) it live from about 10 feet from the stage, I had goosebumps, and I don't think I have ever been so emotionally moved by a song or performance in all of my 55 years. It still gives me goosebumps! even from just hearing the audio (which I still listen to quite often, as it is one of my favorites). And don't feel like you are the only one who gets that reaction, it still takes this old marine all of his poker face training from boot camp to keep a dry eye.

There's a video with the lyrics posted as well, with breaking it into 5 parts, which illuminates a lot, but, knowing this was about the breakup with their first singer, the public backlash, and his trouble with dealing with it all, and his mother and fathers support, totally moves the sticks a BIG way.

This song is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Pit and the Pendulum", but songwriter also channeled some heavy stuff what was going on inside the band, when they had to fire their original singer Tarja Turunen. Hopefully you do more Nightwish! I would recommend 'Ever Dream' from Wacken 2013, or pretty much anything from that same concert. :)

Floor made another victim. No shame in that it is scientifically proven that resistance is futile in her case. :-) A couple of years ago I started listening to symphonic metal starting with Within Temptation. All the time i would run into comments comparing Sharon den Adel to Tarja Turunen (the original vocalist of Nightwish). So i bought one of her solo albums and became u huge fan of Tarja aswell. I heared about how they fired her from Nightwish and did not want anything to do with them because of that. Then i heared about the fact that their current vocalist was Dutch so i was willing to give it a try. The first clip i ever saw of her was the famous "Ghost love score" live at Buenos Aires version. I was totally ready to hate it and ignore the band forever. Did not workout as planned from my point of view. I fell in love with her voice right from the start. They could at least put a big warning sign about how addictive her voice is. :-)
There is another vocalist out there that you also should take a look at called Simone Simons from the from the band Epica. She also has a great voice and a good song to start with is "Chasing the dragon" live from the Retrospect concert. Here is the link. ruclips.net/video/Dx-FsHAQHp8/видео.html

Go back and listen to it with the lyrics and knowing the backstory from the comments section.
There are 2 things it's about simultaneously: the messy firing of the original singer Tarja and the backlash surrounding it; and suicide.
Nightwish has 3 epic songs: this, Ghost Love Score, and The Greatest Show on Earth (do the live at Tampere version).

I heard this first in the studio version. I wasn't too impressed :P I wasn't "mature" enough then. It grew on me later.
When I saw Floor's performance, it made me love the song much more, including going back to the studio version and liking it more.
bonus: I also heard the demo version with Marco on vocals! fantastic. the instrumentals weren't 100% yet though ;)

Been a Nightwish fan for many years now. I generally don't like the bands music nearly as much since Floor took over as the lead singer - not necessarily criticising her, I just think she has a very different type of voice to Tarja (first singer) and that when she tries to do some of those original songs that were assembled with Tarja's voice in mind they don't always work out well with Floors vocals.
Ghost Love Score is one such example - every time I hear that live performance, all I think think of is how wrong it sounds compared to the Tarja's original.
HOWEVER I have found that Floor's voice is a lot better suited to the songs from Annette's era as they vocal styles are a lot more similar, and this is no exception. This is without a doubt my favourite Floor performance of all time, and one of my favourite Nightwish performances of all time regardless of the vocalist. It's one of the handful of songs out there that I cannot possibly listen to without feeling some form of emotion. This song is just an epic masterpiece, and kudos to Floor for capturing that in her performance here.

Dream Theatre has the same tempo variations also. Long songs like movie scores and deep stories to tell. I categorize it personally as progressive metal operatica, it's cool but the length of the songs can get quite dronish and dull (makes them seem to run together monotonously). Albums are easier to listen to if you take a short break between songs. Cool live footage made this song a lot better.
