You know, submarines don't typically have open hatches on the top, they have a way to close them. I would suggest a tarp at the very least, considering you guys don't have the equipment to seal off all air.

If you built the next one with a large bore pipe as the base structure you will have less weld seams and hypothetically less leaks to worry about.
This is probably better suited for a Titanic expedition than Rush's sub he picked up at IKEA for $59.95.
