I have a ‘76 3/4 ton barn door with a manual SM465 transmission and an ‘89 1/2 ton barn door with the 6.2. 73-80 had thicker sheet metal and glass, thinner on the 81-91. There was a few transfercase changes 73-91 also.

Im building an 85 1/2 ton with barn doors i have an 85 donor truck with a tailgate i really prefer the barn doors because of issues with rhe tailgate windown not coming down and that makes it impossible to open the back but you did a real good job of describing available options and such with these trucks with the aftermarket being so strong in the squarebodies now your options are pretty much unlimited if you dont mind searching the web for what your looking for

Best engine you’ve had in squarebody for overlanding?

I did a lot of brake jobs, front bearing packing, tune ups, oil changes, and transmission services on those in the 70s. If you took good care of them they would not let you down.
