Faye Carruthers of Talksport interviewed Southgate and asked him that specific question. When the team were 1-0 down in the 2nd half and struggling to create anything then why didn't you make any substitutions. What was going through your mind in that 2nd half. His answer was, it might seem obvious to bring on subs but he wanted to keep the same shape of the team and he's aware that if you chase a game looking for an equaliser then there's a risk you can get caught on the sucker punch and go 2-0 down. So even at 1-0 down Southgates main focus is to stay in the game, he'll only take big risks chasing a game when there's 2 or 3 minutes left.

Reason England are favourites is because England are in the easiest side of the draw. By FAR. So chances of them getting to the final are shorter than those in the otherside of the draw. Germany, France, Belgium, Portugal and Spain can all beat eachother. Many good sides will be knocked out...
@@Urchinns Makes no sense Austria topped the group with France in it. Romania topped the with Belgium in it. Portugal had to win on penalties against a team who were in England’s group. If you are going by history, then yeah, they would be one of the favourites. But the fact these teams topped the group with the favourites in them tells you otherwise. So the other side of the draw maybe “a little easier”, but “BY FAR” doesn’t prove that in the group stages, lol. Get an education 😂
By history yes. If u look at quality, only their side of the draw, Switzerland, Austria will beat them. Even Netherlands and Romania have a decent chance of doing so
personally im backing spain. but its a travesty how the refs/uefa send the favourites through with deliberate(?) faulty decisions on the pitch. georgia denied clear penalty and spain rewarded with a goal where a spanish player in offside partially blocked the view for the georgian keeper. this is just two clear decisions, like in the germany-denmark game. VAR is not doing its job for fair play!
Tbh how many Spanish players make it in a combined 11 with England, if all factors are constant , like only 3 Spain players displace those England players ,so its just poor coaching

...am just so so happy England won the game. I had put off the match at 93 minutes frustrated. And I was just waiting on the news to Write England are out. But 28 minutes later I saw England ahead. Columbia, Sweden ,Denmark,Ukraine and the worst Germany side this millennium that couldn’t even escape the groups either WC on either side of beating them in the Euros. Now name the teams who knocked us out . Croatia, France Italy. 2 of those are eminently beatable and the third is the team who if you’re willing to accept that loss you’re saying you don’t want to win anything because to hold a trophy you must be better than them.

The punters are too punterish they talk with too much negative criticism. Knock out stage I'll take results over beautiful football. You can ask Belgian supporters which they would have preferred after they lost to the same team. 2nd half England controlled it , with a lot more crosses going in. They needed to go 1 down to get practice in gaining control and attacking. We all knew before the tournament that Bellingham the bulldozer was someone special and do something towards end of the game to get the job done as he has so many times for Real. You can't sub him or Kane they have been the scorers and will produce magical moments. Masterclass to put saka at left back and bring on Palmer. Although Eze fitted in well there later. Remember he's got to think off penalty takers aswell if only a late second half goal only scored. They are not clicking but they are adapting and now can see the see quality they have . Hopefully this is a good learning curve going into the later stages
I am finding it very difficult to understand the whole wait until you play a good team and then they start with Germany France Portugal and Spain. France have not scored from open play yet and they failed to score against the most weak Dutch team in decades and drew with Poland beating Austria with an own goal. Portugal have been beaten by Georgia and needed a last minute goal against the worst side in the tournament. Spain have won their games against the worst preforming Croatia team in years and the most uninspiring Italian team. Belgium have been a disaster in the group stages and Germany have been in hit and miss form. Even though England have been in an under par performance level and have not been anywhere near the level they are clearly capable of the same can be seen with the best teams in the tournament. They have been playing against the same defensive system in every game and they are still unbeaten. Let’s not pretend that the Swiss are the next world champions and they will be a team that is on the front foot and we will have a lot more to play with.

Expected from the French guys , (who have played equally as bad by the way) but tbf the Scottish guys made some good points & Burley is correct with a better manager England would win these games a lot easier

Can someone remind me, how did we beat Germany last Euros? How did we play fluid attacking football in most games in Qatar 2022 and Euro 2021 with this same manager and similar players? What's changed in terms of his managerial style or player circumstances?
The players are not similar. You don't have a Rashford or Sterling to pressure on the left side. They are double teaming Saka on the right, because they know Foden is a turn back specialist.
Not to mention that Gareth never found replacement for Kalvin Philips!!

@mannyyard9882 true - our left side has definitely been weak. But how do you explain the lack of energy, positivity and quality from Bellingham, Walker, Kane, Rice, etc when they've all performed in past tournaments? Southgate's main quality was his ability to foster a close-knit team who really played for each other with shared passion and belief. Where and why has that gone? Most commentators and pundits have been scratching their heads over this as it's almost inexplicable!
I am not saying Gareth Southgate is without flaws, but the hate surrounding him got me baffled. He is one of the most successful managers for England, since 1966. People act like England were winning every single tournament since then. It's been 58 years. He got them 4th place in a World Cup (second time in their history) and 2nd in the Euros (which they never won). That is a success for a team that never delivers in a tournament.

he does deserve some credit as the creator of a 'team england' environment. However, tactically he is so poor/negative and seems incapable of getting the best out of the players. He's been very lucky with the draw/opponents he's played against and once again in this game a quality player has covered up his faults. Also, typical Southgate to go 2-1 up and then bring on 2 defensive players when Slovakia were tiring.
Frank says Bellingham saved a nation - not if Southgate continues beyond this tournament. We could have dispensed with him tonight. Then again the FA is sufficiently inept to appoint someone else who lacks what's required.
