I am living in the U.S. and am 53 yrs old. I had a pen pal here, in Taunton, Somerset back in the 80's! I wish I could find her now! We wrote for about 6-7 years, and shared favorite music, bands, foods, cultural events, etc with each other over the years! It would take a couple of weeks to get our letters, postmarked, to each other overseas. I even asked her to send me candy bar wrappers and magazine and news clippings from here! It was so exciting and I always enjoyed learning about this area and the U.K. all over! WAY before the internet and so much modernized progress!

Taunton is the town where I was born. A lot of my youth was spent in Taunton and I have enjoyed some of my best times in this town. It is one of the places that I feel most at home and some of my favourite friends still live there. I love Taunton.

Love this! I live in the USA, but my gg grandfather was born in Taunton in the 1840s. After his father died, his mother sent him and his brothers to live with their sister in Ohio, USA when he was only 10. His final residence was Pittsburg, Kansas, USA, which is 35 miles from where I was born and still live. My gg grandfather never returned to England, and never saw his mother again. I can only assume his parents are buried somewhere in Taunton. I hope to find out someday. History is precious! Anyway, thank you for the tour. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Yes! Some 35 years ago, my son and I visited Taunton, from which my ancestor emigrated to New Haven, Connecticut, in 1644. He had been wounded in the civil war, and soon after he left, Taunton came under siege by the Royalists. His father was Curate of the St. Mary Magdalene Church. A lovely town now, but a tough history. Thank you for screening.

I mean it looks idilic but you can't judge a book by its cover. Taunton is a nice place, I've been living here now for close to 15 years, but like every town I guess, it has its problems. Many shops have been hit by the pandemic, and Taunton suffers from a good deal of homelessness. Most of the homeless are not from Taunton, but seem to gravitate to it due to there being a homeless hostel in the town. There are some areas of the town that might not have made for a good video. All that said, it's a fairly peaceful, laid back town with generally nice people.

I went to school in Taunton but haven't been back in 40 years. I remember Debenhams and the bridge, also St Mary's where we used to go for Christmas service. There was a rather posh County Hotel and W H Smith near Debenhams I think. We were only allowed into town one afternoon a week and the furthest I ventured is probably the end of North Street. There used to be a County Bookshop somewhere near there. Pity I never knew about Vivary Park, the Cricket Club or the other places people mentioned. It's sad to read about the problems it has now.

Grade I: This means the property is of 'exceptional interest'.
Only around 2.5% of listed buildings are Grade 1 listed.
Grade II: This means the property is important and considered of more than special interest.

One of those ordinary sort of towns that is on the way to the west country, totally forgettable. Ive been a few times through work, a bland place.

lovely little town sadly riddled with crime, violence and drugs. Sadly there was a double murder just last night, and there have been multiple areas in this exact video where people have been attacked/robbed.. Don't read a book by it's cover (or history)!
