It's real easy. Just start small talk and walk your way up and learn more and just overall expand and agree with them. It's best if you know a bit about them such as their ethnicity and expand off that kinda.

It's not easy in New York unless you're really attractive like he is. His natural smile looks good as well but many people don't have that advantage, so they may look weird trying to smile while talking. Most people will be cold af and not want to talk, thinking you are annoying or weird especially store staff in crowded places.

Chinatown and latin markets can be super cheap. I love going to those places, and the produce usually better than the "organic" food in big box, corporate stores.
