as for cats slowing down when loaded. this is the beauty of cruising cats....Robertson and Caine (the Leopard builders) recommend that you can besides full water and full diesel, add 3 tons of food and upgrades to make the total up to 19 tons. with all the upgrades to Sisu and with all the provisions Petro stock Sisu, is she at 22 tons. We are way more heavier than recommended, but still above the painted water line.
just for those who was wondering about how weight affects the speed of a catamaran....i would for sure not advice to put extra 6 tons on a performance cat such as outremer or the lighter seawind models
Thanks, Riley! Just to clarify... If we do turn around and go downwind or 120TWA, then we do go must faster and we are constantly over 10kts, however, the ride is getting very exhausting and uncomfortable, which is not the reason why we have a cruising cat. Many times we actually slows down to make the ride comfy. And yeah, we love our fridges and freezers. We can live for 6 months without going ashore and still have food left 😉 there is safety in that too.

In the long running debate of performance vs. comfort catamarans (imho the debate between monohull and cat is over, cats won) i think a bunch of people are refusing to accept that comfort is winning... comfortably. People spend far more time living onboard than they do relative to trying to get somewhere other than where they already are.
Brilliant technical video. They are always great, but it was nice to find out some hard facts about how you are finding the performance of the cat. Brilliant work, thanks.

Frik perhaps in some future episode you can talk us through your modified reefing system on the main and how your turning blocks made a difference if any, in handling your main especially if you are not directly into the wind. Cheers from this side
Great video, thanks very much for it. I'm not sure if your VMG calculation around 28:00 are correct. You state 7kts STW with 67TWA giving you 5.8kts VMG. Unfortunatly, with 7kts STW and 67°TWA your VMG would be around 2.3kts :-(. If your TWA gets higher then 40° the VMG drops significantly.
Hi, André! You are correct in that I should have clarified which VMG I am referring to. The term Velocity Made Good (VMG) is often confused with term Velocity Made good on Course (VMC), and often used interchangeably. VMC is the speed component in the direction of a mark. I was referring to the latter.
Thanks for doing the fuel consumption figures. It confirmed my belief it is better to work 1 engine moderately rather than 2 engines lightly. The single engine will be loaded higher which is better for longevity and avoids polishing of cylinder walls like low rpm do. It will also spin the alternator/s nearer its optimal RPM. The fuel consumption is higher than Yanmar quote! Is this due to your heavy weight or the additional alternator?
Great point! Yes, I believe it is both. But for the purposes of the test, I waited until the Sterling regulators switched the alts off for high tempratures, but they are never completely off. But Sisu is 22 ton and out of the factory, she was 16 ton. Lots of batteries and solar, but it is the kilometers of thick 12V cables I think :-D Further, we are always stocked with food for at least 6 months during these covid times and for long passages.
One word to make for happy downwind sailing Frik “Asymmetrical “ sail. This will make life much easier. Downwind up to 18 knots apparent wind only one sail to worry about and 1 sheet. If the sea builds use Brents idea of a tylaska shackle and you can dump the power in a second and then sock it !
