The site wasn't designed to just make money and optimized to drive outrage engagement like Twitter or Tiktok. Tumblr was just...kind of a website made for people to use! I work at a small library, can confirm Libby is an excellent option for supporting your local library! Active participation (in all forms) is very helpful for getting the library funding it needs to provide services to patrons!

I’ve been on Tumblr since I was an art student in 2009 and in early 2011, during it’s initial rise in hipster ubiquity, Tumblr opened an office in my city and hosted a public meet up event where you were supposed to wear a name tag with your Tumblr handle and, I guess, just mingle? The office was in an an out-of-the-way industrial part of the city, and seemingly had no party food available other than tater tots. Troughs of tater tots. Anyhow, David Karp was there, which just struck me as so odd- I guess I figured he would have something, anything, better to do with his evening? Anywho, he ended up talking to me and we had a deeply inane conversation about how he liked my hair. It was a weird night and in hindsight, being an art student at a Tumblr meetup, in a warehouse district, talking to David Karp about absolutely nothing important was the most quintessentially 2011 hipster experience I’ve ever had. To this day, I wonder why they only sprung for tater tots. I suppose, in their defense, they were very good tater tots.
I hope you enjoyed my completely pointless David Karp story. It has been uselessly collecting dust in my brain for over eleven years and now it is yours I guess.

@@GoBenC It was pretty busy, actually? I’m not exactly sure how big the place was, capacity-wise but it seemed pretty comfortably full. My theory was there were a lot of people there who were like “Sure, why not, let’s see what the heck this is.” I ran into my own brother there, for instance, and he’s never used Tumblr in his life.

the irony of the guy who made tumblr hating social media, kind of love it. I'm not a big fan of social media but I use tumblr for memes, reddit for info on games, and I go on a writing forum for advice and what people think about certain genre tropes or ideas.

I was 100% expecting to hear that there was some kind of dark side to this guy and was pleasantly surprised to hear otherwise. Of course the only tech CEO who's just like a normal kinda decent guy is the one who made the least profitable social media site on the planet
It makes sense. The world is literally optimized for meanness, unnecessary competition, monoculture, and ruthless money-chasers. Anything else will not be allowed to thrive, and in a sense it is the best of mistakes that Tumblr exists after controversy, is popular enough, and is a somewhat moral website/company. That mistake was being started in 2011, therefore sneaking itself underneath the other enduring social media websites that got popular and pretending it was one of those websites. It worked; it has the resiliency of a typical social media website whose creators are guaranteed profitability-chasers, but it is still really for the people.

I think he's an underrated CEO and businessman. Ofc, not every entrepreneurs are bad. I feel bad for him because Tumblr isn't as big as it was and when it was popular it did have a bad reputation just how we see Twitter now. I mean if I created something that wasn't intentionally bad and losing its popularity, I would be sad.

Wow... I also never thought I would have good reason to like Karp but here we are. To be honest hearing about what he's done to support Planned Parenthood shocked me. Planned Parenthood saved my life by letting me access HRT under their informed consent model and has been irreplacable in my community. I think the fact the he recognizes how important organizations like PP are and actually supports them not just in words shows that he really cares about improving the world. Also the fact that he clearly saw the modern social media landscape for what it was and where it was going and didn't want anything to do with it. Mad respect. I hope he's doing alright now wherever he is.

I totally get where they're coming from with the complaints about the direction of Tumblr but I do think things have gotten a LITTLE better in '22 like they had a couple really stupid ideas that the user base rejected pretty hard but since then they've had a couple home runs(the crabs? So many crabs, ad free plus the blaze feature has been a blast ) idk yea they've definitely done some dumb bad shit but it does feel like maybe someone finally got permission to do good things

I left tumblr around the NSFW ban as well, mostly because my blogs got hit with censorship that was unfounded simply based on the tags I used. I appealed my temp ban but nothing ever came of it and I gave up. Makes me sad that I lost a lot of following for my stories & poetry based on a bad bot ban :/
I've thought about returning a few times these past few years but I feel that since the platform has declined so much and the main userbase that I was familiar with has mainly left, I don't know where to start. Kinda sad that the vision David Karp had for the platform came true and then so rapidly went downhill.
tumblr is so painful to use that I use secondary sites that collate posts off it for me whenever I'm looking for fanart etc. It's so bad that I use another site to see its content. Cannot recommend going back
I actually think the site has been at its most chill since the aftermath of the ban has settled. There's still a few writer and study blogs I follow, and it's been pretty much fine. The filter is so weird that after a year or so I saw (mostly written) nsfw posts making a comeback, and just... staying there.
i only made an account in 2019 after the nsfw ban, so i don't have anything to compare current tumblr to, but i can tell u that it's the only social media that i can use without immediately doing huge damage to my mental health (besides youtube i guess? though this site's ads and algorithms make it borderline unusable). i don't think tumblr rn is much like it was before the ban, let alone anything like it was in its hayday, but it does what it does well and is a million times less evil tech overlordy than any other site its size. the smaller user base might honestly add towards the more positive and connected vibe it has.
tbh i see the porn ban as a good thing, it makes it safer for minors that use tumblr and it made all the crazy people leave for twitter, making tumblr a calmer place
@@Jane155-x6d I agree. The porn ban most likely correlated their healthier culture shift. There's this saying that Twitter is hashing bullshit discourse that Tumblr went through in the mid-2010's; I always thought it was more indicative of Tumblr's maturity than anything else.

@@vincentbardai1096 they make fun of them now but in their heyday they were considered very "father figure" ish. Like everything they said was "insightful" and everything they made was "the best pice of work to ever exist!!"
And then when they didn't meet the incredibly high expectations people set for them people started to resent them, it's a cycle.
Neil Gaiman is a good example of this, just one who hasn't fallen out of favour yet (which is impressive considering how long he's been one).
That's not to say that there weren't people who just didn't like them from the start, but I find that the most hate on tumblr/fandom spaces comes from people going "I can't believe I liked this stupid THING, I was so STUPID. And all these other people like the same THING? Then they must be STUPID like ME!!"

I never took the time to look into him so this was really eye-opening actually. I think it's interesting that both him and Tom from MySpace don't use social media much but created some really awesome spaces themselves. Their stories are interesting when you compare them to Mark and even Jack from Twitter. I wonder how they all feel about the decisions they've made.
This explains why I'd see Tumblr described as being held together with gum and string back when i first joined lmao. I loved the chaotic ways you could mess with the site that were pretty much always unexpected
I love trying to explain to people that you could just edit other people's posts and it was in fact a normal and expected part of the culture and so many iconic older Tumblr posts were edited at least slightly because if someone didn't like a certain sentence or one of the replies they could just erase it

I left Tumblr after the porn ban but i never deactivated my account because I liked to go back once a year to see what's going on over there. Recently I came back once I realized there was a lot of content and discussion about the fandoms I'm currently on, and tbh it has been the best decision I've made so far. I'm having as much fun as I did back in the SuperWhoLock era.

I'm glad you mentioned Marco Arment! As someone who knows about Marco primarily through his post-Tumblr ventures, all the people in the memes referring to David Karp as if he were the sole creator of Tumblr kinda bugged me.

i really recommend giving it a try! i don’t think anything will hold a candle to peak 2011-2014 tumblr times but it’s still a fun community. “clout” or status isn’t really a thing people don’t care really if you have followers we all just share our silly little posts to our silly little blogs and talk about mushrooms n stuff.

i've been on tumblr since like 2012 and i love it so much. i met one of my best friends bc we were mutuals in high school. it's always been this little safe space for me and i honestly love it.

It'll be interesting to see how the introduction of the tumblr shop and the new feature tumblr blaze which lets users pay to promote their own posts (and there have been some good shit posts people have chosen to blaze). It seems like whoever is making decisions currently are starting to figure out how to financially appeal to the tumblr userbase, but it's probably too little too late.
Probably but it's never too late to hope. The only hope that Tumblr has of regaining its mainstream relevancy is if it did what Instagram did and gentrified its identity. Bringing NSFW content would be too late imho since OnlyFans already exists.
@@manutd7194 onlyfans already had relevancy when tumblr's born ban hit, it just appealed to a different kind of market than the one that existed on tumblr. With facebooks impending crackdowns that market is now left free floating with no real home, and tumblr is the perfect place for it to set up shop again
@@manutd7194 i think tumblr NSFW content occupies a different space than OF or other NSFW platforms. Tumblr NSFW bloggers always had a lot of personality in their content and i think the ability to incorporate and reblog content from other users in their sphere allowed them to curate a really specific voice and identity in a way i feel like OF can’t really replicate since it’s just a single creator pushing out their content for pay.
@@lexingtxn I probably should have explained myself better, but NSFW creators already would be getting paid and with a lot more reach than Tumblr does and ever would so why would creators go back to a platform where monetization isn't a viable option. Art maybe, but I have a feeling that without major changes to the platform Tumblr Blaze is as good as it's going to be.
@@manutd7194 i agree for creators OF is probably a better payout but i think tumble is such a great place to create community in niche spaces that don’t have a lot of traction on other traditional social media sites.
i think there’s definitely a possibility that if tumblr allows nsfw content on the platform again that OF and Cam creators will return to interact with their community and share some content but link to their primarily NSFW platform to continuare making revenue
i personally love these videos about tumblr. i was a teen when tumblr was PEAK popularity and then died a few years later. there are so many things that come from that website that outsiders will never understand. if different social media platforms were countries, then tumblr is a whole other planet. it’s strange to talk to people no more than two years younger than me and they have no idea what it is.

This era of tumblr is really funny to me in hindsight, bc I could tell I wasn't interested in a relationship with boys but I hadn't fully realized I was a lesbian yet. The whole "rule of tumblr: always reblog david karp" thing didn't make me feel obligated, but I wanted to make friends with other girls my age. Whenever anyone asked me about how I felt about male celebrities like Benedict Cumberbatch, David Tennant, Tom Hiddleston, etc, I felt afraid of hurting their feelings or making them not want to talk to me, so I'd lie and say that I thought they were attractive. It's just kinda uncanny to look back and remember that I was a middle schooler nervous of losing friends if I was honest about not liking the popular actors on tumblr, and now in my 20's I'm openly a lesbian and don't try to hide things about myself from my friends.
I already loved Tumblr and somehow you made me feel even more nostalgic for it (I NEVER EVEN LEFT), it's wild

So Tumblr wasn't my site of choice as I was moving away from the internet for a while at the time. What was my site beforelife got busy was GaiaOnline. I freaking love listening to videos chronologing how this silly anime and gideo game fan site stretched itself beyond it's means and rot from the inside as it's internal economy became a literal text book (as in ACTUAL TEXTS BOOKS mention it) example of runaway inflation.
I wasn't really paying attention at the end and thought you said "stay thirsty my friends" which would admittedly be on brand

Eventhough I’ve been on tumblr since 2011, I straight up was not aware of the creator and his popularity until seeing the heritage posts. Honestly, he just seems like an average tumblr user and I’m glad that he stuck to his guns in not participating with the max profit toxicity of other socmed. It really says a lot about him that he is still inactive in other socmed (at least using his real name). Part of me wonders what he would think about the rise in TikTok.
