Excellent motivation for the winter ahead. Much appreciated.
Hybrid Training is awesome
I counter your first tip with: always pack a layer when you aren't close to home. You will have to take breaks, or maybe you'll be forced to walk, and there is no point in feeling miserable. Even though you are toasty 95% of the time, you will remember the 5% percent when you were cold, and it will make you more reluctant to go out. If you go out long, eventually you'll get tired, and your body will not be as good at producing heat.
Be honest, you were cold while filming during the breaks.
As someone looking at becoming a hybrid athlete and living near the Scottish border I defiantly feel these cold mornings and evenings and planning ahead is key. Simply going to bed earlier has been key for me
Great video, I had some great takeaways! One thing I want to add, as someone who used to be huge into alpinism and now runs in the mountains... a spare layer isn't a weakness or an inconvenience, it's an important piece of safety gear. If we have to stop our slow down for any reason, like a twisted ankle, or if the mountains weather acts up without warning as it's prone to doing, that extra layer could be the difference between a great day in the mountains vs misery, hypothermia, death, rescue... if you've got a vest, you've got room for a spare layer. Great stuff though, looking forward to implementing it!
Love this. I live in Switzerland and most of my runs start at around 5:30am, so its very dark and very cold, plus there’s often snow and rain. Plus I am in the mountains regularly and planning to do that also in winter (not as high up though) to build resilience💪🏻
Thanks for this, I certainly find it harder to drag myself out on the dark early mornings at this time of year
I learned the hard way through my marines training but one of the best lessons I've ever learned. Pushes me in every aspect of my life now! Keep up the good work fergus
Great video!
I have SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and usually dread the winter, but I'm in a great headspace at the moment and am hoping this winter will be a bit better than usual.
I'm really excited about reframing the winter season as an opportunity to develop resilience and work on my fitness (and myself overall!) These tips are just what I needed to hear.
Exercise has improved my mental health so much, so it would be a disaster to stop just because its cold/wet/dark outside.
I've found that building resilience in my running has bled into the rest of my life, and its truly turnrd things around for me. I'm nuch better at dealing with unexpected hurdles and setbacks now, which is so impirtant ad I'm currently rebuilding my life after serious mental illness.
Thank you so much, youre really helping people with these videos. Much appreciated :)
everyone has that u aint special lil bro. u probably also think u have adhd
Conquer this winter bro you got this
Maybe talk a little about safety during winter outings. You say you don't want to be weighed down by heavy jackets or similar, but in case of an accident, warm clothes, a bivvy bag etc can be life savers.
I agree. Pack the extra layer. A running vest is comfortable and can fit a few layers in case of a storm or if you are forced to walk. Having an enjoyable experience will make you more likely to go out again.
I agree with most of what your saying, but I do think you need to work(or rest even)with the winter appreciate what is going on in nature during the Winter months and peak during the Spring and Summer (Yang) seasons like most things surviving and thriving in nature. Success leaves clues as Poliquin said and I think there are things in nature doing alot better than us humans, and dare I say continue to do better long after we have gone...
Maybe its because Im a Londoner but I love the winter and its Yin purposes!
Last winter I was more of a "be a bear wear your layers" I'm going to try the be bold start cold approach
Frosties Badge, I remember those
It unlocked a forgotten memory
This ought to be interesting. I already have a very good cold tolerance as I was out grounding this morning on the frost in only basketball shorts pretty sure that my neighbors if they saw me would be shivering for me
Starting to tune more and more into this season of wintering Fergus, get after it mate
Love it dude, watched your wintering video last year helped me get through the winter, smash some running and improve myself! Well played :D
Great video Fergus, awesome advice I will be taking on board
Just started doing 5k's, and now wanting to strengthen the rest of me around my new found cardio abilities, so found your channel. I did my first 5k slap bang in the middle of storm Ciaran, and was out going as hard as I could twice during storm Babet, so seems I'm off to a good start. Maybe it's cus I usually get seasonal depression, but I'm absolutely loving being out in the elements no matter what. I think I'm actually gonna prefer running in the cold and wet to the summer! Gonna be following you for the foreseeable as I take my first steps into the gym.
Amazing ❤
Man, the worst thing about winter is coming inside to a place that blasts the heater until it's hotter than the summer
Quick way to get my arse sicker than a skater
Any tips for wintering for someone in the tropics? It doesn't snow here and the temperature remains heated in the afternoon
I call now his next race will be the Ice ultra @ferguscrawley, and if it isn’t you should definitely go for it.
